Mortal Kombat X

The Mortal Kombat franchise has always been one of the most controversial fighting game series in the entire industry, and Mortal Kombat X shows no signs of slowing down in that department. Full of excessive blood and violence, Mortal Kombat X provides players with a gory celebration of brutal combat. As the tenth entry in the esteemed fighting game franchise, Mortal Kombat X continues the trends put into place by Mortal Kombat 9, but features some notable gameplay changes as well. With a fully-fledged story mode and plenty of multiplayer options, Mortal Kombat X is a content-rich experience that's tons of fun to play. From gratuitous finishing moves to fancy combos, Mortal Kombat X has everything a fighting game fan could want.

Main Game Features

  • Lengthy cinematic story mode
  • Highly replayable combat challenges
  • Over 20 unique fighters

Story

Like Mortal Kombat 9, Mortal Kombat X contains a multi-chapter story mode containing dozens of fun fights. The story is a direct continuation of Mortal Kombat 9, taking place two years after the death of the evil Shao Kahn. In an effort to avenge his death and take advantage of the supposed peace in Earthrealm, the evil sorcerer Shinnok and his army of minions attack, spurring on an epic war. After seeing their dead friends revived with dark magic, a team of classic Mortal Kombat characters team up to stop Shinnok. The story further jumps ahead by several decades, resulting in a new cast of young characters. As these characters attempt to resolve an ongoing war in the realm of Outworld, old enemies conspire to reignite the war of years past.

Gameplay

Many aspects of Mortal Kombat X remain the same as always: two characters face off in a fight to the death, utilizing special moves and swift attacks to gain victory. In addition to the aforementioned story mode, Mortal Kombat X contains a plethora of other game options, including challenge towers, a fleshed-out faction system, and competitive online multiplayer. As you fight in various modes you'll earn currency that can be spent in the Krypt, an extra mode wherein players can unlock various collectible goodies. In this first-person mode, you'll explore a dark and creepy graveyard, breaking open gravestones to access new finishing moves, costumes, and concept art.

A lot of changes have been made to the main fighting mechanics, including both new features and some changes made in Mortal Kombat 9. The energy bar returns, allowing players to execute powered-up special attacks and gory moves called X-Rays depending on how much energy they have. Players can also interact with the stage and objects in it, jumping off pieces of debris and using scattered items as weaponry. Every fighter now has three variations to choose from, each one providing different moves and strategies. Generally speaking, the fighting feels a bit slower than usual, encouraging players to interact with their surroundings and try new attacks.

Conclusion

Mortal Kombat X is another awesome entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise and it delivers the experience that fans deserve. The cutscene-heavy story mode is tons of fun, presenting cool character match-ups and explosive action. Extra gameplay modes like challenge towers and the Krypt keep you playing if the online and local multiplayer doesn't keep you occupied enough. A long list of unlockable content ensures that you'll always have something new to work towards, providing endless hours of replayability. If you're a fan of fighting games, definitely check out Mortal Kombat X.
