Awesome Possum y is the latest woodland creature to hit the trails in an action/adventure game. Tengen's set their little marsupial out to clean up the trash and pollution in four worlds: the Rain Forest, the Sea Caverns, the Arctic Circle, and evil Dr. Machino's Domain. A nice idea for a game, but this possum definitely isn't Awesome.

ProTip: In the Sea Cavern, learn which fish are friendly and which aren't Hint. The eels may give you a charge, but they're not friendly.

Promising Possum

Awesome moves much like a more famous rodent (you know the blue one with the red shoes). Awesome runs, skids, gets catapulted off of objects, and flips into a deadly ball of fur to wipe out his evil enemy's robots. Just like other games of this genre, the game play moves along quickly as Awesome hops 'n' bops through the worlds, exploring, collecting recydables, and occasionally finding a secret area. As an interesting variation, after completing each level you have to answer a multiple-choice question about environmental issues.

Watch out for the golden traps. They're often hidden behind bushes and at the bottom of long falls.

Despite the similarity in game play, the resemblance to Awesome's hedgehog competitor doesn't extend to the game's graphics. Awesome is a cute sprite, but washed-out backgrounds, less-than-colorful enemies, and dull bosses are nothing to chatter your teeth about. You may even notice some slowdown in areas like the Sea Cavern.

  • Don't fall in the waterfall in the last section of the Rain Forest, or you won't be able to catch your last breath.
  • Go for a ride on the Rhino in the last section of the Rain Forest to collect a lot of recydables and to plow over enemies without taking any hits.

A large chunk of this game went to Awesome's digitized voice, which chirps on throughout the game. Given the limitations of the Genesis hardware, Tengen's done an awesome job of giving voice to its critter. Although the phrases occasionally get a little annoying, there's enough variety overall to keep the chatter interesting. The tunes are nice and soothing, so most of the time you don't even notice they're there.

Despite adjustable challenge, a lack of passwords and continues keep Awesome on his claws, and may make the frustration level pretty high for beginners. Luckily, Awesome is easy to manipulate, even for less experienced mammals.

  • The Boss 'Bot in the Rain Forest, Part 3, Is easy to turn into a scrap heap. Back him into the bottom left-hand comer and keep pouncing on his metal head.
  • Always ride when you can. It's much quicker than walking, especially in the Sea Caverns.

Possum with Potential

Awesome Possum may not be awesome, but it'd be close if it weren't for the repetitive, lackluster graphics. If the other critter games are making you feel like hibernating for the winter, you might want to curl up with Awesome.

Game Reviews

Tengen has created a comical character for the Genesis named Awesome Possum. One of the most outstanding features of this game is the quality and sheer number of the voices. Throughout the adventure "Possum" will say a multitude of hilarious things.

The story is simple. Some majorly evil dude is trying to pollute the world, and you must stop him and his baddies before it's too late and everyone dies.

The game play is quite similar to the ever popular Sonic the Hedgehog, and has a number of surprises that'll delight any player. The levels are unbelievably long, and only a handful of checkpoints will save your hide. Gain points and collect lives by picking up and recycling cans and plastic bags. In between levels you can earn a lot of points by answering a question posed to you by your animal friends. Awesome Possum is an entertaining cart, and if you enjoy games like this, then you are sure to love this one. The voice simply makes this game. Awesome Possum is outstanding.

Shut up! This critter loves to talk, and in excellent voice digitization, but that seems to be at the cost of solid game play. The scrolling is a bit too choppy to make this a game with long-term appeal!

From the moment you turn on your Genesis (cart in, of course), you will realize what separates this cart from all the others. As the whole title of the game is sung to you by a chorus, the Possum comes onto the screen, points to himself, and proclaims that he is "Awesome." This isn't what you'd expect from a run 'n' jump! This possum does all kinds of vocals - everything from saying "I'm Back" when he continues, to all forms of Californian Skid sayings (i.e., Dude, Totally Cool. Awesome, etc.). A unique game with quite a cute gimmick.
