Brawl Brothers

Some guys can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. Jaleco's putting up its dukes in the SNES street fighting arena once again with Brawl Brothers, a much improved follow-up to Rival Turf. This game doesn't quite reach the top of the 16-bit, side-view brawling heap, but it comes darn close.

Kidnapped Kickboxers

Malevolent scientist Dieter does the DNA twist in his laboratory and discovers the secret to cloning human tissue. He uses his new- found power to kidnap and clone three of the five Brawl Brothers. You and a friend choose who he nabs, then take the remaining two on a four-level mission to free your bros. For extra practice, you can fight each other in a Versus mode.

Brawl Bros, is packed with excellent moves and techniques. Hack is a street fighter with devastating kicks and throws. Slash lights up the sky with fists of fire. Lord J. is an agile karate master. Kazan uses ninja skills and a triple jump move. Wendy busts deadly aerial kicks. Unfortunately, there's no way to block attacks, and the controls you use to reverse moves are imprecise.

ProTip: Use Hack's Power Punch when close to enemies for maximum damage.

Busting Up Bayside City

Dieter recruited a tough but repetitious bunch of thugs. You fight endless knifers, gunmen, flamethrowers, and martial artists. To rescue your comrades and get them to rejoin your team, you must kill their clones, which lurk at the end of the first three levels. To make things easier, you can adjust the difficulty, number of lives, and number of continues to your liking.

  • Angry mode stops enemies from inflicting massive damage when you're caught between them.
  • Stand over a fallen enemy, then push Up and Attack to nail him while he's down.
  • For an easy kill, back an enemy into a comer, then run and execute Wendy's Spinning Double Kick.
  • Slash's clone can't be hit while he breathes ßãe. Walt until he runs out of breath, then grab him from behind.

Brawl's graphics look deadly. You rumble through the streets, a bridge, a sewer maze, a jungle, the maze inside Dieter's Command Center, and the Air Fortress. The nicely illustrated backdrops, touches of multi-scrolling and big characters are great, but the visuals suffer from stiff animation, flicker, and occasional slowdown. The music rocks, but the sounds are quiet and the voices are muffled.

In Stage 2, throw enemies onto landmines to detonate them safely.

Send in the Clones

While Brawl Brothers is an obvious Final Fight knock-off, it's a good one. If it had a greater variety of enemies, it might well have taken out the current 16-bit beat-em-up champ, Streets of Rage 2. Video vigilantes who've polished off other games should bring Brawl Brothers into their family.

Have a Brawl!

This is the year of the fighting game as there are going to be many released. Brawl Brothers is one hot fist fight from beginning to end. It's a two-player fighter with more moves than Final Fight; like body slams, leg sweeps, hooks and uppercuts. You'll need all of them for ten terrifying levels loaded with the toughest brawlers waiting for a human punching bag. If you're up for some one-on-one action, check out the cool versus mode.

Brawl Brothers is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up game which is actually the second of the Rushing Beat trilogy, although it was not advertised as such in the US. It is considered the best in the series and often compared to similar games, such as Double Dragon and Final Fight.

In the beginning, the game has you select two out of five possible characters who must rescue the remaining three. The enemy has abducted them for their evil purposes, and that is to amass an army of powerful fighter clones.

The gameplay is standard for the genre: you battle your way through hordes of enemies until you finally reach the boss at the end of the level. Along the way, you can pick up various items, such as health-restoring supplies and numerous weapons. An interesting aspect of Brawl Brothers is that it allows you to throw any item and deal damage based on the item and character. Another aspect is the “tag team” gameplay, which is also the reason why the game has you choose two and not just one character. Should your first choice be defeated, you can continue fighting with your second character.

Brawl Brothers also includes a co-op mode where you can play with a friend (each with one character), and an “angry mode” which provides injured characters with a boost in their power, lending itself to a more interesting gameplay for some.

Although it does not really stand out when compared to other similar games, it is unique because it also includes the original Japanese version which can be accessed through a cheat code. There are a few differences, such as the names of the characters, the removal of the mazes from the levels and a longer ending sequence.

Compared to its predecessor, it includes improved graphics, more characters to choose from, and more moves for each character. The bosses at the end are also the clones of the characters you set out to rescue, each with different attacks and certain moves which are not available for players. All of this adds to an increased replay value.

In the end, while there is nothing special or innovative about Brawl Brothers, it is worth checking out for fans of the genre, if only for the nostalgia factor.

Brawl Brothers game features:

  • Five characters to choose from, each with different strengths, weaknesses and gameplay.
  • Randomised and untypical enemies. No run-of-the-mill punks.
  • Co-op mode, allowing you to play with a friend.
  • Available on the Wii Virtual Console!

Brawl Brothers is a side-scrolling Beat'em up released in Japan as Rushing Beat Ran for the Super Nintendo. The Brawl Brothers are two guys, not actually brothers, named Rick and Doug (or, Hack and Slash, respectively) who run a self-defense gym in Bayside City. The player can pick up weapons like sticks, guns, grenades and such. A special Angry Mode gives injured fighters a burst of energy. You choose one of five characters Hack the street brawler, Slash the police officer, Lord J the karate master, Kazan the ninja, and, Wendy the professional wrestler. The game was followed by the release of The Peace Keepers.
