Choplifter was in the first wave of video games during the Golden Age of Gaming (which included such classics as Pac-Man, and Qix), and it was the precursor to Desert Strike. This side-scrolling continuation is fast and addictive!

Blades of Bitterness

In Choplifter III, you must complete various missions, all of which involve gathering a specified number of U.N. Hostage.

You set out in a chopper, armed with a machine gun, but you pick up various projectiles like Scatter Bombs, Air-to-Air Missiles, and Anti-Tank Missiles. You go up against Tanks, Bazooka Fire, Surface-to-Air Missiles, and other choppers.

The graphics in Choplifter III are beautiful and varied. Desert campaigns, jungle missions, and urban warfare are all nicely represented. Although the chopper itself is small, you face some giant bosses.

The sounds are all death and destruction, fitting right into this game. There are no real rockin' explosions, though. You can hear muffled rotor noise, but enemy death screeches would've been more effective.

Take It for a Spin

The controls are tricky until you get used to them. You can't obliterate your own people (a change from the original), so the challenge is in getting from place to place alive and avoiding the enemy.

You'll be addicted to the game play in no time, and this fast, great-looking game shouldn't be overlooked by fans of Desert/Jungle Strike. There's more here than meets the rotors, and Choplifter III lives up to its predecessor.

Fly the Unfriendly Skies

Fans of the original Choplifter have something to cheer about. Choplifter 3 takes all the elements of that classic fight-and-rescue game and adds new weapons, new enemies, and new features - as well as SNES graphics and sounds.

Here's how it works:

  1. At the beginning of each mission, you're given a number of hostages to rescue.
  2. You must find the buildings in which they're held, blast them free, and give them a ride back to the base.
  3. All the while, naturally, you're being bombarded with enemy fire from tanks, jets, paratroopers - you name it.

Our initial peek at Choplifter 3 looks promising, but we'll have to see how well it holds up after you play for a while.

Terrorism is running rampant. The Maghreb guerrilla force - known as the N.W.L. terrorist faction - has secretly accomplished a midnight raid on four strategic Allied peace-keeping strongholds along the Megrehbian border. Many citizens were lost during the struggle, and some were taken hostage for use as human shields for the N.W.L. to deter any U.N. retaliation. Throughout the missions, you have to pick up the hostages and return them to your homebase while avoiding hard-core enemies. More lives will be lost if you and your copter don't succeed in saving the hostages.

Yes, Choplifter, the timeless game, finally makes it to the Super NES, and it is a winner. Fans of military simulators will definitely feel at home with this one. The levels are huge, but there could be more of them.

This military action/strategy title holds its own on this portable version with good control and very good graphics.

The levels are big, with lots of enemies and there are also plenty of weapons to use and hostages to pick up.

Your troops are caught behind enemy lines with the enemy edging ever closer only the U.N Peace Keeper's can save them in time, You in you trusty war horse the Apache must avoid enemy fire and shoot you way to the stranded pinned down soldiers and return them back to safety, You also may find friendly zones to refuel and repair you bullet ridden Apache and find soldiers hiding away in buildings, Cargo planes parachute in missiles and bombs to aid you journey, This game lacks a little with the graphics but they are not all that bad, sound is okay not great but the game play is superb.
