Based on the animated hit movie Chicken Little (2005), Disney’s Chicken Little by Avalanche Software is a classic action-adventure game that puts you, the player, in the shoes (or lack thereof) of the titular Chicken Little.

Little Chicken, Big Fun

While most children’s movie-to-game adaptations tend to receive poor reviews, Chicken Little stands out against similar games of the early 2000s as one that managed to impress reviewers for its quality and attempts to keep things fresh in a genre of stagnation.

In the game, players make their way through levels based on scenes from the movie as they run, jump and bash through any obstacles in their path. While the game is primarily a platformer, many of the game’s stages feature unique minigames, as well as vehicle levels to keep things interesting.

The game’s approach to platforming will be familiar to fans of the Tak series of video games, but offers enough of a difference to make it stand out as you traverse highrise platforms, shimmy up pipes and grapple obstacles with your yo-yo.

The story is a simplified version of the one present in the movie, and it centres around the main character Chicken believing that the end of the world is nigh. Unfortunately for him, nobody believes Chicken in his claims that the sky is falling, but the citizens of his town soon eat their words after a species of aliens decides to invade Earth. In the game, the story is delivered through a ton of FMV cutscenes that are taken directly from the film, offering some entertaining visuals sprinkled throughout the game’s total runtime.

Speaking of the visuals, the game has a bright, colourful and visually pleasant art style. The graphics and character models are well done, and look very much like their movie counterparts, perhaps thanks to the game’s increased budget due to being an official video game offering by Disney.

Egg-celent Level Design

Most of the levels are made up of simple jumps and double jumps, with a few different climbing mechanics thrown in for good measure to maintain a regular degree of challenge for the player. As you progress through the game’s many levels, players unlock gadgets to experiment with, such as the soda bottle, which works as a nitro-booster to launch you over vast parts of the stage.

During these soda sections, the game switches to more of an on-rails-shooter, where players will need to grab collectables and avoid obstacles as you fly at supersonic speed. Other sections of the game include a baseball game based around a pivotal scene from the film, where players are tasked to complete rhythmic minigames in order to progress through the story. Outside of the necessary story-based minigames that players need to go through to progress, there are also a bunch of minigames that players can unlock too. Players unlock the optional minigames by collecting spinning cards hidden in levels. While a game for children, the cards are surprisingly well-hidden, and finding them all is a rewarding challenge for completionists.

The variety in minigames will definitely be a welcome treat to those who go the extra mile to find all of the collectable cards. One game has the player shooting targets from the inside of a robot/mech contraption, and another takes the format of classic, space shooter games of yore.
