As World Cup Soccer fever rages, the competition to make the best soccer game continues, too. Elite Soccer from Gametek is a cart to look for in the future.

There are so many options you can pick from, such as changing the weather conditions, the referee's style of regulating, the goalie's skills, and whether to play indoor or outdoor, among others. If you want some competition, enter the World Cup Mode and play against the very best in the world. Go through the rounds to see where you stand. Play in existing fields where they show you the size and capacity of the stadium, and where it is taking place.

Elite Soccer may not be as flashy as other soccer games, but it delivers some great features that make it worthy.

HAVE A FRIEND?

The exciting part about this game is that you can play against another player instead of the computer. Just hook up another controller, and boom!--you're set. Plus, playing against the computer can get easy at times and the challenge is scratch off. So, get with it and invite a friend over for some real action!

Game Reviews

On the Game Boy, Gametek's Elite Soccer brings new meaning to the word "disappointing." Bland graphics and sounds make this lifeless game miss wide -really wide - of the goal.

Get Your Kicks

Elite offers many standard soccer options. You play with 24 international teams, adjust game-play features like weather and player speed, and choose from eight formations and six strategies (such as Attack and Cautious). One of the best features is the practice mode - it's an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the controls and refine your shooting techniques before actually playing a match.

The above-average responsiveness of the controls also strengthens the game. Players react quickly to button presses, and you can kick accurately.

The only control setback is your inability to control the flight of the ball after kicking it, a common feature in other soccer carts that helps you score more frequently.

Yellow Card

Now the bad news. The graphics are weak and uninvolving. Even by Game Boy standards, these tiny, poorly defined players move stiffly in front of simplistic backgrounds. Their dives have some nice animation, but that's it. The terrible sounds drag this game down even farther, but at least you can turn off the soundtrack.

Too bad Elite Soccer doesn't come close to living up to its name. The above-average controls and practice mode can't compensate for graphics and sound that fall far short of elite.

ProTips:

  • Keep moving back and forth when you have the ball to prevent opponents from stealing it.
  • Use the practice mode to sharpen vour skills.
  • Refer to the player ratings and keep the ball with your best player as much as possible.

ELITE SOCCER ON GAME BOY!

I'm not really a Game Boy game fan, but if it's a sports game--I have to see it. Everything from the Super NES has been transferred, except some colors ... okay, a lot of colors, and some of the features are the same.

Hook up another Game Boy and play versus with a friend, or enter the World Cup and compete against the very best teams from around the world. Check out the standings during the very first rounds of the World Cup series and see who you have to defeat. Cool animations and game play value bring out the game.

Simultaneous five player action, updated team rosters, and 32 international teams should have made this the ultimate soccer game, but the computer determines which player you control. This isn't the detailed representation of soccer you'd expect.

Gametek's Elite Soccer for the SNES is the company's first soccer title. It shows. The game's not bad, but it falls far short of the high standards set by the top soccer games.

Elite Options

International teams, player ratings, variable weather conditions -- you've seen most of Elite's features in other soccer games. The World Tournament features the world's top soccer powers, each represented with real-life players. The U.S. team, which made a strong showing in last summer's World Cup, is among the elite teams. Other strong features include a practice mode that helps you hone your skills and exhibition games that are played in an indoor-soccer format. More soccer games should offer an indoor game; the fast, high-scoring action's a blast!

ProTip: When playing indoors, aim to the side of the goal. The ball will ricochet off the wall, letting you cash in the rebound with a quick shot.

Missed Shot

With small, undetailed characters, Elite's graphics are anything but elite. The indoor arena provides the best background because you're a little closer to the action, so the players seem slightly bigger than they do on the outdoor fields.

The sounds are disappointing. Thankfully, the soundtrack can be turned off, but the crowd noise sounds more like TV static.

  • When you have the ball, zigzag back and forth to keep defenders from stealing.
  • On defense, press Button A to steal the ball from behind an opponent.

In the control department, players move well and respond quickly to your commands, though you may wish that you could control the flight of the ball after a shot. This game may please beginners, who should be able to pick it up and play without too many complications. Elite Soccer won't join the list of soccer champs -- substandard graphics and sound keep this one back in the pack.
