Soccer Mania

Pandemonium breaks loose among the jubilant spectators as the score indicates a tie between your team and the powerful national soccer team from Brazil. The cheers heighten to a deafening roar as the minutes dwindle to seconds. Your team has one last chance to make the right move to win the much-coveted World Cup.

Within seconds, your teammates have slipped a ball past your opponent. You dribble the ball towards the opponent's goal and wait for the goalie to come forward to stop your shot. Then, with a perfectly timed maneuver, you hook the ball to the corner of the net past the goalie and score!

You Call the Shots

A truly realistic game of strategy and skill, Goal! allows one or two players to participate in an actual soccer game simulation. You can play against the computer, a friend, or cooperatively with a friend against a friend.

In addition to capturing the sights and sounds of the real thing, Goal! offers the soccer enthusiast, as well as the amateur, a variety of playing modes to challenge any playing skill.

You can choose any one of the sixteen countries and compete in the World Cup Competition, or choose one of the eight American professional teams and compete in a three-round tournament. A much simpler game option, the "shoot" competition allows you to choose one of three players and compete against a goalie and two defensive players. There is also a continue mode that allows you to pick up where you left off in the competition.

By using the directional controller in conjunction with the "A" and "B" buttons, you control the shooting, dribbling, passing, tackling and other movements of the players. Depending on your offensive or defensive play selection, you control one of the team members.

Like a real soccer game, the referee whistles a penalty when an infraction is committed, such as "offsides" or "kicking" (tackling an opponent from behind while on defense).

One of the keys to scoring in Goal! is to master the trickier maneuvers, like heading the ball and hooksliding. With a lot of practice you can sharpen your skills and improve your strategy as you ad-vance in the tougher World Cup Competition or the Professional Tournament.

Sudden death

If you thought soccer was a game for the rest of the world, here's America's answer. A fanatical crowd, a full team of 11, and action so precise, so powerful, so awesome, you can almost taste it. Win or lose, one thing's certain: Goal! will win you over.

At your favorite video game store now!

Heads up, worldly sports fans. The game from Jaleco that tore up the turf on your NES is now ready to kick its way to your SNES! Goal! is the name of the game and realistic soccer action is what it's all about.

The Setup

There are two modes of play in Goal!: Super Cup and Exhibition. Not to be confused with the officially licensed title of World Cup, Jaleco's Super Cup gathers 24 teams from around the world to compete in five rounds of adrenaline-charged games for the Super Cup trophy. You can also play an exhibition game against the team of your choice in one-player or competitive head-to-head two-player mode. Once you've labored over the setup of the game, the fun begins.

ProTip; To dominate your opponent, choose a team with a high Speed Rating and select a 3-5-2 formation. Fast Midfielders can help on both offense and defense.

The Spirit of 70 Kicks

The graphics in Goal! aren't going to thrill you, and the sound isn't going to chill you. Fortunately you're given the option to turn the music off.

If you're in the middle of a crowd of defenders and nobody's open, pass the ball to yourself by using the lob pass to kick the ball over the defenders and quickly run to where the ball lands.

One thing that really makes a save in Goal! is the controls. You have three major kicks at your disposal that allow good ball movement. Goal! also takes advantage of the extra buttons on the SNES controller. On defense, you can press the L button to draw the other team off-sides by pulling your Backs toward midfield. On offense, you use the R button to select your active player, giving this game the most seamless and controllable passing technique of any soccer game for the SNES.

A Throw-In near your opponent's goal is a good chance to score. Press A or B while the ball is in the air, and your player will head the ball into the goal.

You can keep tabs on your players by checking the full-field radar at the top of the screen. Other cool options that capture the spirit of the game include a five-shot shootout to decide tie games, where you shoot and block in all eight directions; and a Save Game option for your Super Cup tournaments.

Play On

You don't have to worry about substitutions, fatigue, or wind factors because Goal! is a player's game, not a coach's. On occasion, you have time to think up strategies, but for the most part this game is all action. The graphics and sound won't make you dribble, but the game play will grab you by the super cup and trap you for hours of fun.

What's the most popular sport in the world? Soccer! And since this NES title hit the shelves, sports fans are discovering why. Goal! brings top flight soccer strategy and skill to video game life. Pick any one of sixteen different countries and compete in World Cup Competition, or choose one of eight American professional teams and compete in a three-round tournament. You can also try the "shoot" competition. Play against the computer or a friend, or team up with a friend against another friend. You'll soon discover why more and more people get their kicks from soccer!

GOAL! is here for devoted soccer players and fans everywhere. Three different formats allow you to play your own game. "World Cup" lets the player choose from 16 different national teams and compete for amateur soccer's most glorious prize. "Tournament" play features eight different "pro" teams competing in a three round single elimination competition. "Shoot Competition" pits one forward against two defenders and a goalkeeper. You can play against your friend or the computer.

With only seconds to play, there seems to be no hope for the Americans. The score is tied, but you need to win this match — the Spanish team is half a game ahead in the standings. A long defensive kick clears the ball to a midfielder, who sees you breaking free down the right sideline. Deftly, you angle toward the goal with the ball, then pass to the center forward, who floats a lob right back to you. Two defenders are coming up, so your only chance is to head the ball. You carefully time your jump — and it's in the net! The World Cup goes to the U.S. for the first time in history!

Well, maybe not yet. But Goal! will give you a taste of what winning the World Cup in soccer is all about. Play against the computer, or compete with a friend. In the World Cup tournament, you play as one of 16 international teams. There's also a professional tournament with eight American teams in a three-round competition, and a goal-shooting match that pits you against a goalie and two other defenders. Each player in Goal! is rated in dribbling, speed, shooting, ballkeeping, kicking power, tackling, and marking (covering a player defensively). Goalies are also rated by their jumping, catching, and blocking abilities.

Goal! is easy to play, but the specialized techniques of soccer may take time to master. Hook-sliding to steal the ball is espedally difficult because the timing must be exact. You must learn to weave while dribbling theball, and know when to pass. On offense, you can only control the player with the ball, but on defense, you can transfer your control among the players by pressing the B button.

The referees will usually call a violation — but only if they see it. Just as in a real game, though, they won't catch everything. Other realistic touches include cheering crowds and halftime entertainment.

Goal!'s screen can be confusing. Only part of the playing field is displayed at a time, so knowing where to pass can be a problem.

Also, some teams have uniforms with colors so similar that you may find yourself passing to an opponent. If you're looking for an enjoyable way to experience a sport that is only now becoming a fixture in the U.S., Goal! just might be your ticket to the fun.
