The new world order has driven the KGB's Colonel Crackov absolutely nuts. He's out to sabotage the American/Soviet alliance at any price. In Mig 29 by Camerica, you're an ace Soviet pilot out to crackup Crackov. This jet combat cart doesn't take you into any new airspace, but it flies pretty well.

A Supersonic Soviet

Mig 29's major strong point is the solidly designed, diverse payload of jet combat that it drops into the NES. You fly six lengthy missions. The graphics are solid, if familiar, but it's best to ground the sounds.

ProTip: In the first mission, scrape along the right side and then the left as soon as you takeoff to get all four weapons.

The aerial action begins with a behind-the-jet aerial shootout. Later missions require you to fly a behind-the-jet session and then tackle an overhead perspective shootout.

Veteran NES jet jockies will have flown these unfriendly skies several times before, but they'll find that Mig 29 puts up a world-class fight. Jets and helicopters attack in merciless waves, and ground fire is murderous. Massive, well-armed waft versus boss jets, slay boss aircraft and fiercely defended ground targets await fliers who makes it past the initial waves of retreat to the opposite side, enemy forces.

When you're killed, you're temporarily invincible for a few seconds after your new jet appears.

Your challenges aren't limited to shooting. To keep your buttsky flying, you must also pull off midair refueling and land safely after every mission to earn replacement jets and four types of weapons.

Mig 29's combat action is intense, and the game play doesn't make it any easier. During behind-the-jet scrapes, the controls are super sensitive. However, during the overhead view fighting, your jet's reaction time slows, noticeably.

Dig This Mig

If you're a rookie flier, this game's full of first-time thrills. If you're an NES Ace looking to add another "kill" to your collection, Mig 29 will give you a run for your rubles.

Take away the background wallpaper and fluff from this title and what you're essentially left with is a basic first-person shooter with adequate graphics and sounds. Like Strike Eagle, this is basically a Top Gun update that doesn't have the Top Gun name. Very limited in scope and playing options.

While MIG-29 is not a better game than F-15, at least it doesn't pretend to be a 'real' flight simulator. Geared more for the younger player, this is a good game but not a spectacular one. More importantly it is fun to play. Not a lot of difficult flight instructions just take off and shoot. While limited in options nothing is missing.

It's no top gun, just your average run of the mill 8-Bit cart. Not a terrible effort, but not a game that will remain in your mind until you get it for yourself. There are a few cool features, but the game is repetitious and creates little excitement. The graphics are typical 8-bit as are the sounds.

Why bother making a flight simulator on an 8-bit machine? They have never done well. Now, this isn't the fault of the programmers by any means as they have taken the 8-bit system to its limits. This is a kids game and for their use, MIG 29 should do just fine. It is not acceptable for the serious gamer though.
