Lost in the sea of amazing 2D platformers released on the Super Nintendo, Plok had to compete against some of the most iconic titles ever released. For retro fans, however, few games have the same fluidity and risk-reward gameplay dynamic as this outstanding mascot platformer.

Developed by Software Creations and published by Nintendo, Plok puts you in control of the titular character Plok, whose main ability is shooting off his limbs to take out enemies. This unique premise immediately sets Plok apart from other platformers of the era.

The most distinctive part of Plok is its core gameplay hook of detaching Plok's limbs and using them as projectile weapons. You can send Plok’s hands, feet, and torso flying at enemies to take them out from a distance. If only Rayman had thought of that.

Visual Splendor

The visual presentation of Plok is top-notch, with detailed sprite-work and smooth animations bringing the character to life. The art design has tons of charm, with Plok himself being an expressive and likable protagonist.

Each level also has a distinct artistic theme, from Plok’s sunny hometown to the wintery Akrillic zone. The visuals hold up great even today thanks to the Super Nintendo's iconic 16-bit aesthetic. It's impressive the amount of character the developers instilled despite the console's limitations.

A Punishing Platformer

Make no mistake - Plok is a difficult game. With no save system, limited lives, and scarce checkpoints, the platforming challenges show little mercy. Enemies attack relentlessly, dishing out a lot of damage if they hit you. Boss battles too are epic struggles, testing your mastery of Plok’s abilities.

There are definitely some frustrating choke points that may grate on your patience. However, overcoming the tough-as-nails levels provides an immense rush when you finally succeed. The difficulty makes your accomplishments more rewarding. While not as needlessly frustrating as Super Mario World's extra levels, Plok still has its fair share of frustrating moments.

Weaknesses Hold It Back

For all Plok offers in innovation and personality, it does suffer drawbacks that hold it back from being a masterpiece. The game can feel unforgivingly difficult, especially with certain vehicles. Checkpoints are also sparingly given, demanding perfection across lengthy, complex levels.

This pairs frustratingly with the limited lives system; lose all your lives, and it's back to the beginning of the island. These unbalanced difficulty spikes disrupt momentum. Plok also lacks the sophisticated level design and polished controls seen in games like Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog released around the same era.

Despite flaws with difficulty and controls, Plok remains an undervalued gem on the SNES. It provides a uniquely enjoyable and refreshingly offbeat platforming adventure not seen in other big mascot games of the 1990s.

For its innovative limb shooting mechanics, diverse suit system, charming world, and exceptional soundtrack alone, Plok deserves recognition as a cult classic and a standout among lesser-known SNES platformers.

Game Reviews

If you're tried-and-true Super Mario Bros. fan, here's a neat game cut from the same cloth. Plok, a little bundle of velcro, is the star of the game. In fact, the story line and game design feature a "fabric" motif, much like Bubsy. For example, Plok's the self-proclaimed King of Akrillic, an island in the archipelago of Poly-Esta. Don't worry if you find the textile references just sew-sew, because there's much more to this game.

A Material World

Plok's on a multifaceted mission to recover his stolen Flag, find an ancient Amulet, and eventually fight the Queen Flea. You guide this little guy through 35 tricky levels, and (if you're lucky) 10 Bonus Levels. With this many areas in a game, you definitely get your money's worth.

ProTips:

  • Since you score a Plokontinue if you pass through a level without losing a Plok, consider powering through the first few levels without collecting every Shell.
  • Plok must descend at an angle to grab some Shells.
  • Since Plok's limbs return like boomerangs, you can zap enemies from behind.
  • When you fight the Bobbin Brothers, stay between them as you fire Plok's limbs. Don't fire all of Plok's limbs.

Better Thread than Dead

Plucky Plok's challenge could rip a seam in any intermediate gamer's mind. The game's levels are lengthy treks, and booby traps abound. Plok's domain is overrun with dangerous, bizarre creatures, such as the plant-like Shprouts, the stone-spitting Rockyfellas, and the bothersome Fleas.

Plok mounts an unusual but effective attack by literally flinging his arms and legs at his foes. They return like boomerangs. Be careful, though, because when Plok's limbs are all in the air, his torso bounces out of control. Luckily, the game's crisp controls help you to pull precision jumps and bumps.

Graphics, Sounds Sew Nice

Plok paints a pretty and imaginative picture. Generally, you get brightly colored, cartoony character sprites set against a variety of vivid backgrounds.

The sounds present nice texture, too. Ear-friendly effects are sharp, and the excellently orchestrated, energetic music seriously rocks. Plok even blows a mean harmonica.

Rags and Riches

Plok weaves a good game. Once you look under the covers, you'll find an engaging, thumb-numbing adventure. If you like hop-n-bop action, pin down Plok.

Plok is a terrific action game. The music and animation - not to mention the graphics - are sweet. The unusual power-ups are a big plus, as they add to the humor of the story. While the Bosses aren't anything to write home about, the actual game is visually stunning. The challenge level is really high, possibly turning off younger players, but hard-core gamers will love it. Tradewest has managed to make yet another killer cart.

Now here's a totally original character. Plok does what few characters could ever do - throw their limbs at enemies! The levels are drawn beautifully, with pastel colors and a few hidden surprises strewn about. I really love the old-time black and white levels. The music is fabulous and really draws you into the game. Although there are tons of side-scrolling games out there, don't overlook Plok. The battle suits are a great idea!

Whoa! Look out! Where did this one come from? It's so refreshing to know that there are some game companies out there with a little originality. Plok has got to be one of the most unique games to come out in a while. It's odd, but I really like his ability to throw his limbs at the bad guys. Most everything is done very well, from the colorful graphics, to the jamming music, to the excellent game play. What else can I say? I like it!

What a surprise this one turned out to be! You hear about something throwing its limbs around and you'd never expect the cool a power-up suits and techniques involved. Each level is very colorful, with secret areas and warps. The concept of arm throwing is catchy and there are plenty of situations to test it. Big levels and loads of variety are a plus. One downer is that it continues to take you WAY back!

I've been Plok'd!

Plok is the protector of the kingdom Akrillic. One day, Plok glanced high atop his building and saw that his flag had disappeared. Who had taken his flag? He was determined to answer that question, so he set out on a quest to search for it. You can help Plok along in his journey to find the culprit and the flag itself.

Plok has a special ability to throw his limbs at will. This is a powerful weapon against the evils that inhabit the islands on your quest. Deadly vegetable creatures, monstrous frogs, and jumping fish bones are just some of the enemies you will face in trying to find the flag. In each level, you will be able to collect flowers for points, presents which give you different outfits and power-ups, and you will be able to work within each island to find ways of advancement. For example: throwing your limbs at a gear with a platform attached will make it spin. You can then hop on and take a ride up to the next section of the level. Your flag is on one of the poles, but which one?

Are you fed up with the same type of game? Well, get set for a cool breeze of originality! He may look strange, but Plok sure is a unique guy in an excellent game!

Instead of spin attacks and jumping on heads, this guy uses his arms and legs as projectiles! But losing ail your limbs can be a drag (pun intended)! The setting is on an island, that Plok lived on and took care of, but the baddies are raiding his stash of flags, and he is going to settle the score!

A very unique cart, you pass the time by collecting clam shells to earn lives and continues. You can also pick up beehives to release hornets! All the stages have a theme to them, all of which are quite humorous. There's even a level that is set in the past and is in black and white with old movie music! The levels are colorful and have many secrets, like special packages to give you some fancy suits! This cart shines above the rest with its cute originality!

Don't be fooled by how small this island looks, for the levels are huge, and there is an entirely separate island and a cave system to go through. Don't forget the flashback to a past level with your Grandpappy! First, go to Cotton Island and find your flag there, then return home to discover your stash of extra flags gone! Rid the rest of the island of the flag-nappers and you will be able to win the island back for good!
