Rambo 3 is essentially several games in one. The game contains several missions that each present a different objective like destroying stockpiles or finding P.O.W.s. Most of the action encompasses Rambo in the main playfields who must stab, shoot, and bomb his way past the opponents. Some of the weapons available to Rambo, like the exploding bow, can be built up a la R-Type for more destruction. First-person scenes divide the regular missions and add to the challange.

Rambo 3 is essentially the Genesis' answer to Commando and other scrolling shooting games. What makes Rambo different are the self-contained environments that allow you to explore and the first person bonus scenes between missions. A bit short, but lots of options and color make this one fun.

While not their best shooter, Rambo 3 is definitely deserving of its name. It packs a nice combination of multi-screen mazes, with a shoot-anything-that-moves theme. In other words, just what Rambo would do in this situation. A large number of digitized screens demonstrate the Genesis' power.

A straightforward commando-style game with overhead views and awesome 16-Bit graphics! The cart includes cool digitized pictures from the movie and extremely detailed surrounding and Bosses. Not enough variety in the game play, but it fills a niche.

Rambo 3 isn't a large game, but what it does contain is done very well. Each of the rounds give vou a different objective, and the multiple weapons help spice up the killing mayhem. The bonus rounds look very good, as do the digitized pix, but the smaller 2-Meg size of the game hurts it slightly.

Game Reviews

Rambo's back, and this time he must rescue his friend, Colonel Trautman, who was captured in Afghanistan by Russian soldiers as he attempted to deliver weapons to the Mujahedin freedom fighters. Because the U.S. government fears that a rescue mission would be politically embarrassing, they've decided that they must leave the colonel in the prison camp in which he is incarcerated. John Rambo, of course, has other ideas.

Rambo III, unlike the previous adventure, Rambo: First Blood Part II, is a game that requires the Sega Light Phaser. You must battle your way through seven levels of action, shooting the on-screen targets as they appear, while not harming the innocent bystanders. The screen display scrolls slowly to the left, and soldiers with rifles, machine guns, grenades and other weapons run onto the screen or pop up from foxholes or from behind obstacles. Some of them begin firing on you immediately, while others give you a chance to aim and shoot. But in either case you must be fast to avoid their deadly fire.

On the bottom of the screen is a strip containing your score, your life meter, a bomb icon, a "drink" icon and your bullet count. The life meter shows the amount of damage you can take; each time you get hit, it goes down. The bomb and drink icons are actually targets that you can shoot. When you hit the bomb icon, all the targets on the screen are destroyed (including innocent bystanders, so you have to be careful with this one), and when you hit the drink icon, your life meter is restored to its maximum. You don't, however, have unlimited bombs and drinks; you start off with only one of each. But after they're used, you can restore them by shooting crates, pots and other such items on the screen in which the bombs and drinks are hidden. This isn't easy to do, though, because it usually takes several shots before the prize is revealed, and in the meantime the enemy continues its attack.

When the battle first begins, you are equipped with a Kalashnikova assault rifle, which can fire a steady stream of bullets much like a machine gun. Being able to spray the enemy with lead makes your job easier, but you have only a limited number of bullets, and when you use them up, you will be forced to complete the level with a single-shot rifle.

If you're striving for a high score, it's advisable to conserve your equipment as much as possible. At the end of a round you are awarded bonus points based on the number of bombs, drinks and bullets remaining. You also get bonus points for each remaining segment on your life meter.

As you blast the targets, you must remember that not every person on the screen is your enemy. Frequently, villagers and other "innocents" will cross in your line of fire, and if you accidentally shoot them, your life meter will go down. (Kind of like shooting yourself in the foot!) Sometimes the enemy will cross behind a fleeing bystander, making it difficult to pick him off (the enemy, not the bystander, silly).

Rambo III isn't one of those light-gun games that'll allow you to play comfortably from the couch. You're going to have to sit fairly close to the screen in order to be able to fire accurately enough to advance in the game. The action, especially on the higher levels, is fast and furious, with many enemies on screen at once, all of them doing their best to knock Rambo out of action.

All in all, Rambo III isn't as addictive as Shooting Gallery, another of Sega's light-gun games; however, if you'd like to see what it's like to be Rambo, battling against virtually insurmountable odds, putting your life on the line and facing the business ends of dozens of guns, this game will give you that chance.

BLOW THE SOVIET PINKOS AWAY!

Based on the blast-em-up movie and not the Master System game, Rambo 3 takes you on a mission to rescue your mentor, Colonel Trautman. You must guide the all-powerful John Rambo through a series of missions in order to reach your final objective. The majority of the action is played out from an overhead perspective, although you are challenged with first-person perspective confrontations after certain missions are completed. In these special contests, it's Rambo against powerful tanks and helicopters, with an explosive bow as your weapon.

During the main rounds, Rambo can use any one of three different weapons which can be selected at any time. Of course Rambo also has a limitless supply of ammo for his machine gun which you'll find yourself using the most. While the graphics are top-notch, with digitized pictures from the movie setting the stage for your adventure, Rambo 3 is not very long and is not too difficult to complete. This is a good Commando-style shooter, and fans of these types of games should consider it.

The Weapons

  • Knife - Kill enemies with the knife to generate arrows and bombs.
  • Bow - Hold down before you shoot arrows to increase destruction.
  • Bomb - Incredible power! Lay in front of towers, tanks, and more.

The ultimate fighting machine, Rambo, makes his latest video game debut in 16-Bits! Rambo 3, the Genesis' answer to Commando, Ikari, and other vertically scrolling combat shooters, dishes up plenty of new thrills in a package that looks great!

In addition to first-person perspectives, underground tunnels, and full-screen digitized photos of Stallone, Rambo 3 features scrolling scenery that is painted across the screen in vivid detail. Combined with the exceptional animation of our hero going through his paces, Rambo 3 is one of the best looking games in recent memory.

Super-powered graphics and game play promise to make Rambo 3 a winner!
