We have all heard the classic line from Shrek when he tells Donkey to “Get out of me swamp,” but apparently we never heard him finish, because according to Torus Games, the rest of the line is “and get on me racetrack.” Torus Games released Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing in part because it is a decent game, but also probably in part to save the Shrek racing franchise from its demise when Shrek Swamp Kart Speedway was released and made a joke of both the racing game and Shrek franchises by giving the game the short end of the stick in almost every aspect. Luckily, Torus Games came out with Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing to at least make the situation a little better.

Design

The game is extremely pixelated and almost feels like an undercut, even for 2006 standards. Players race in an isometric view of the course, watching from the side, like Racing Gears Advance or a spectator of The Kentucky Derby.

Because of the odd view, some of the characters featured in the game are almost deemed useless, because the player is unable to make out who they are racing against, as their rides seem to be multiple times larger than the racers, overshadowing them and making them seem as if they are tiny blobs that should be wiped from the screen. The rides themselves, however, do look decent and are fairly creative, since none of them are actually cars. Players ride on everything from donkeys and horses to the Big Bad Wolf himself.

Gameplay

Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing features all of the standards for a racing arcade game. With barrels scattered around the track, players can run over them to obtain one of ten power ups available in-game. Ten power ups seem like a lot until the player realizes that some of them repeat the function and just have different looks when they are obtained. Players race through tournaments and attempt to win the Cup Challenge and are awarded points for each race, which there are eighteen of, making players really have to earn their place over and over.

The good thing about having so many races, however, is that there are multiple tracks, so those that like the game and its style should truly never get too bored.

The racing will get hectic at times because of the narrow tracks and multitude of powerups that will be thrown around all at the same time, keeping racers on their toes and edges of their seats, waiting to see what is thrown at them around each corner.

4

For a kart game, there is nothing special here other than it claims a tie to the Shrek franchise. The graphics are old and could have even been done better at the time, the players are skewed and do not make sense at all times. The gameplay feels unbalanced and clumsy at times, despite the fun fast pace. For these reasons, as much as I love the onion eating ogre, I have to give Shrek Smash n’ Crash Racing a 4/10.

Pros

  • Features standards of any kart racing game
  • Multitude of tracks available to race on
  • Features known characters from the beloved Shrek series

Cons

  • Characters can barely be made out on the track, if at all
  • Features some characters not in the move, while some are left out
  • When racing, nothing makes it truly Shrek themed
