Supervillain alert! Doctor Octopus has assembled five of Spider-Man's fiercest foes to form the Sinister Six - an organization bent on world domination and the extermination of one particular arachnid superhero! Last year's NES hit returns as a one-player slug-fest for the Game Gear. Though not identical to its NES sibling, this fraternal twin has enough action to keep any superhero busy.

The Boys Are Back in Town

Doc Ock and the Sinister Six are back to challenge and torment everybody's favorite web-slinger in a six-level, sidescrolling extravaganza. As Spidey, you swing through each level toward a showdown with each of your foes. You find Electro at the Power Station, Sandman in the Toxic Waste Dump, Mysterio hiding in his House of Illusion, the Vulture hovering above the City's rooftops, Hobgobin awaiting in his forest cave, and Doctor Octopus cloistered within his Castle.

Each level is congested with endless waves of thugs, punks, robots, missiles, mines, rats, and razor bats. Your skills include punching, kicking, wall climbing, web slinging, and the ability to shoot attack webs. You start with four energy units and lose one each time you get hit. Keep your spider senses alert for valuable pickups, such as Attack Web Fluid, TNT Detonators, and Infrared Goggles.

Arachnid Acrobatics

Each of the cart's lengthy levels challenges Spidey's abilities in a different way. Some demand aggressive wall climbing and web slinging, while others necessitate the more subtle approach of crawling through cramped tunnels.

Web-Spinning Winner

Although it's reduced to fit the confines of the Game Gear, Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six doesn't lose any of its punch. Excellent, detailed graphics grace this game. Spidey and the supervillains look and fight exactly as they do in the comics. Game play is adequate, considering the Game Gear's cramped quarters. This game is extremely challenging, even for advanced players. Thank goodness for unlimited continues! If you're looking for hot hand-held action, then swing this way!

ProTips:

  • Electro momentarily stops moving to shoot his sparks.
  • You can't wall climb over some obstacles, such as ledges and open windows.
  • Don't waste time fighting Electro. Turning off the Spark Generator is the only way to pull his plug!
  • You can only swing in open spaces and fire a swinging web while jumping in midair.

Game Reviews

Everyone's favorite web-slinging superhero makes it "big" on the small Game Gear screen! In a summer dominated by the "bat," bugging around as Spider-Man might be a welcome change of pace.

I Luv NY!

Yikes! As if New York City doesn't already have enough problems, the Kingpin of Crime has preempted the airwaves to warn the citizenry about a hidden nuclear bomb set to detonate in 24 hours! What heinous villain could be responsible for such a dastardly deed? Doctor Octopus? Electro? Venom? Would you believe your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?!? Sure, Spidey's been framed, but it's up to ol' Webhead to find and disarm the bomb before the Big Apple ends up in orbit!

This game is extremely faithful to its comic book origins, especially regarding Spidey's moves and grooves. In addition to running, jumping, punching, and kicking, Spider-Man is able to climb walls, shoot webbing, and swing across the screen from web to web. The graphics are well rendered, bright, and colorful. However, the characters move a bit stiffly with limited animation. The music and sound effects are standard Game Gear fare. You can turn them off.

Slinging and Swinging

Eight increasingly difficult levels await you in this single-player, third-person perspective, multi-scrolling game. Spidey must swing from the city's warehouse district to the sewers and into Central Park to find the five keys needed to disarm the bomb. On each level you must defeat every henchman and overcome every obstacle before you fight one of Spider-Man's arch enemies, including Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, Electro, the Sandman, the Hobgoblin, and Venom! Wipe-out the super villain, and you get a key. Neutralize the bomb, and you'll face the Kingpin in a final showdown!

You begin each level with a timer that indicates how long till ground zero, and your set amount of energy units and web fluid. Revitalize your energy by returning to Peter Parker's (a.k.a. Spider-Man) apartment. Doing so, however, will drastically drain the timer and restart you at the beginning of the level. You can buy more Web Fuid at the end of each level by taking snapshots of Spidey's battles and selling them to the Daily Bugle as Parker.

A Sticky Situation!

Spider-Man looks like the 8-bit Sega Master System game released last year (see GamePro, Aug. '91), but it's much more challenging. The graphics are identical, but the Game Gear version lacks power-ups, bonus items, and continues. Fortunately, difficulty options range from Easy to Difficult to Nightmare.

Spider-Man's strong point is definitely its challenge. If you're bent on finishing this cart, you're guaranteed your money's worth! Hey, who said being a superhero was easy?!

ProTips:

  • You get 24 shots per level. So, for top payola, be sure to take all your pictures before you zap the super villain!
  • Neutralize Doc Ock's tentacles by thoroughly webbing him up before you go in for the TKO!
  • Save your Web Fluid for when you really need it!
  • Play It safe and web up super villains before you take their pictures!

Everyone's favorite arachnid superhero finally makes his first appearance on the NES in Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six. Having already conquered the Genesis, the Game Boy, the Sega Master System, and the Game Gear, UN strives to make this game live up to the heroic reputation of its predecessors. Stay tuned to see whether this Spidey swings, or gets squashed like an 8-bit bug!

Trouble Times Six!

Agreeing that Spider-Man has been their constant obstacle to world domination, several of Spidey's most fearsome foes have assembled together as the Sinister Six. Comprised of Doctor Octopus, the Sandman, Electro, Mysterio, the Vulture, and the Hobgoblin, the sole purpose of this supervillain sextet is to permanently exterminate our web-spinning supertiero. Realizing the best defense against imbalanced odds is a fierce offense, you, as Spider-Man, must seek out and defeat all six supervillains before they gang up on you!

ProTips:

  • Electro must charge up before he fires his electric bolts. Jump away as soon as you see him charging up.
  • Pull Electro's plug by turning off the Sparks Generator. Hit Electro from a safe distance with Attack Webs until he's been turned off.

Does Whatever a Spider Can

Spidey's moves are as smooth as spider's silk. Shoot attack webs, punch, or deliver flying kicks. Run, jump, crawl, climb, and throw swinging webs to move yourself throughout the six, side-scrolling levels of this one-player game.

Comic fans will be thrilled by the game's faithful adherence to the look and feel of the Spider-Man comic books. Working within 8-bit limitations, it makes both Spidey and the supervillains look, move, and fight on screen exactly as they appear on the printed page. The controls are super sensitive. You must have lightning reflexes and total control of Spidey to succeed in battle.

  • To crawl up walls faster, hold down B for an extra high jump before you start your climb.
  • In order to reach seemingly unreachable platforms, swing up to 360 degrees.

Survival of the Fittest

This game starts off fairly easy, but soon becomes an intense struggle for survival. You start with four energy units, which decrease proportionately depending on what hits you. For example, a punch by a regular goon doesn't effect you nearly as much as the Sandman's punch. Score 1000 points and earn yourself an extra energy unit. Play for keeps 'cuz continues are limited and there are no passwords!

Save time and health units by swinging over or flipping over the lackeys. Save your energy for the Boss. You'll need it!

A variety of invaluable pickup items sporadically pop up throughout each level. Attack Web Fluids yield 10 shots. Other items, such as keys, TNT Detonators, and Infrared Goggles, are essential to complete certain consecutive key level tasks. Use your muscles to find the item, and then use your noggin to figure out how to use it.

There's no time limit, so take time to find all the Attack Web Fluids and pickup items on a level.

Eight-Legged Entertainment

Spider-Man: The Return of the Sinister Six is a well-crafted, entertaining action game worth taking for a swing. Responsive controls, an impressive variety of moves, and detailed graphics enable you to experience superheroin' firsthand. 'Nuff said!

The continuation of Spider-Man's epic struggle to stop crime is here: the third GameBoy game entitled Spider Slayers. Look for all the action that made the first two so popular here. Spider-Man is now being hunted down by the police and the criminals. To make his matters worse, a group of super-villains are developing a special weapon to destroy the web-slinger once and for all. A great sequel.

Doctor Octopus is plotting the crowning caper of his criminal career...to rule the world! He has reunited the sinister six and with these super villains together again, nothing stands in their way — nothing except Spider-man!

In the first stage of this exciting game, you must face Electro and his horde of henchman. Throughout the search of the city streets, you will come across riflemen, land mines, and laser cannons. Helpful items include throwing knives hidden in various places.

Spidey must defeat Electro, Mysterio, Sandman, Hobgoblin, Doctor Octopus, and Vulture, in the web-slinging adventure!

Spider Man is back... but he isn't alone! This time, however, he isn't fighting the Kingpin and his henchmen: Dr. Octopus has taken up the role of the big baddie, and our web-headed friend is the only hope anyone has! Match Spidey against Dr. Octopus, the Vulture, Hobgoblin, Myste-rio, Sandman, and Electro! The tough Spidey has a life meter which can be recharged by power-ups hidden in the levels. Also, several of the levels require you to find items essential to pass them, such as keys and dynamite to open doors! You have no time limit, but you have a limited number of continues to complete the game! Swing into action with this web-slinger!

LEVEL 1: ELECTRO

This level takes place in the city, then in a power plant! Electro is the Boss here. Turn off his power switch and he will attack you!

LEVEL 2: SANDMAN

Sandman appears and disappears anywhere he wants on the screen! But you can easily beat him if you stay in the same place and hit him when he first transforms, and then duck!

LEVEL 3: MYSTERIO

Here you will need the Red Glasses which can be found somewhere in this level; without them, you will not be able to see through one of the sections! Mysterio is your opponent here, and he will attack by vanishing and reappearing and punching you! He is predictable

Developed by BITS in the U.K., this Game Gear jump-and-puncher is a nearperfect duplicate of the NES Sinister Six game that Acclaim released just a few months ago. A side-scrolling action contest, it sends your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man through a half-dozen (fairly long) scenarios to do battle against such classic Marvel Comics villains as Electro, Doctor Octopus and Mysterio.

With one of the most visually striking costumes ever created for a comicbook superhero, Spider-Man deserves to be seen in vivid color, and the fluid, high-speed animation of the web-slinger in Spider-Man--Return of the Sinister Six does the character justice. The "running" and "somersaulting" bits are superbly animated, though something weird happens whenever Spidey turns his back to the viewer to cling to a wall or lamppost. Where the NES version gave the wall-crawler the appearance of an arachnid Cabbage Patch Kid during these sequences, the Game Gear animation makes it look like he's kicking with both feet at the same time when moving up or down, or performing a bizarre vaudeville two-step when moving sideways.

Also, what's the deal with the screwed-up aspect ratio of these multisystem games? The curiously flattened look of this game's title and intermission screens might be understandable if they had been done with the correct proportions in an earlier version of Sinister Six on a different game system, then ported over--but the NES game looked like this too. Can somebody at Acclaim keep an eye out for this stuff? Heck, even the Sega logo looks like E. Honda sat on it.

Happily, the stylish look and snappy soundtrack of Spider-Man--Return of the Sinister Six help the game to sueceed in spite of its flaws. If it's not perfect, at least it's better than the cruelly hard-to-see and awkwardly animated The Amazing Spider-Man 2 that was programmed by BITS for the Game Boy (and recently released by Acclaim). For my money, the best portable Spider-Man game is still Acclaim's original Game Boy version, now three years old and still a killer contest for gamers on the go.
