You sit inside an M1A1 Abrams Battletank. a 63-ton metal warhorse packed with state of the art weaponry and a 1.500 horsepower gas turbine engine. Your only links to the outside world are three small windows, which offer a bleak view of a vast, desert landscape that stretches endlessly into the horizon. Sweat trickles down the sides of your face and your throat begins to tighten. Out in the emptiness, you know a massive military force waits. It's one goal: to blow you out of existence!

Desert Stormin'

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf by Absolute is a well-crafted, one-player tank cart. Since it's meant to be a realistic simulation of desert warfare, there are no catchy soundtracks. Stage Bosses, or power-ups. Instead you get true-to-life graphics and authentic game play.

Based on actual military operations from Desert Storm, Super Battletank features 10 missions. Your mission objectives are scattered throughout the Middle East, and you're pitted against an army of enemies and obstacles, which include Soviet- made T-62 tanks and MI-24 HIND helicopters, mine fields, SCUD launchers, and heavily fortified enemy strongholds.

ProTip: Memorize the distance required for each mission. The M1A1 has a limited range of about 300 miles per fuel tank.

Heavy Metal

If this isn't what it's like at the controls of a real tank, it seems pretty darn close.

The first-person view from inside the battletank's cockpit effectively conveys a sense of claustrophobia and limited mobility. A sophisticated control panel lies in front of you, providing pertinent information about gun angle, range to a sighted enemy, number of targets, speed, fuel, weapons status, and ammunition.

Your panel even records damage like the real thing, too. Five hits and you're scrap metal! Fortunately, your commanding officer permits you 3 continues at your last level.

Pay extra attention to the fuel gauge, ammunition gauge, and short-range radar map.

The tank's main weapon is a 120mm cannon, which fires standard and laser-guided shells. The cannon turret (and your view) moves independently of the direction that your battletank's traveling. Twin 62 mm machine guns flank either side of the cannon, and they're extremely effective at close range. Finally, you may release a sudden smoke screen to confuse your enemy.

Machine gun fire destroys mines and oncoming enemy cannon shells.

A Long-Range Radar ties all this awesome firepower together with an overhead-view map of the entire field's operation. The map identifies you, the enemy, and the all-important allied bases where you may refuel, rearm, and repair damage. This map is invaluable for finding the enemy and planning your war-winning strategy.

  • You can still be attacked when you're in Long-Range Radar mode.
  • Take out mobile tanks first Then attack the stationery enemies in hit-and- run strikes.
  • Just before you take on an enemy stronghold, Rearm and Repair at an allied base.

A Direct Hit!

Super Battletank has plenty to offer military strategists and action gamers alike. Don't worry if the digitized sound effects and graphics appear limited compared to other SNES action games. Instead, note the smooth scrolling animation and excellent responsiveness of the controls.

Tank battles require serious planning. Tank control and actual combat require quick thumbs and a keen shooting eye, like any good video shooter. The higher levels of this game are extremely challenging. With Super Battletank, like in real warfare, victory requires luck as much as strategy. Fortunately, unlike the real thing, this cart offers plenty of second chances.

There's a lot of depth in this game that's really enjoyable. The different scenarios you can choose from, as well as the multitudes of ever-changing environments that the game presents give it a brilliant score for execution. The actual battles, however, get a bit repetitive after extended play and ultimately take the gloss of this cart.

8

Leave it up to Absolute to come up with something new and exciting. This version is one of the few S-Nes games that says "Super" and really is. A great looking game that plays well also. Probably the most innovative new game to come along in a long time. Real sound, real 'tank-type' movement and real battles.

6

One of the most original carts that I've seen on the S-NES. The enemies are digitized and look really cool. The backgrounds, however, are repetitive and boring. There are a variety of different weapons, but there's just not enough variety in the actual game play to keep it from getting repetitive. Excellent sound effects!

7

Excellent! Although it lacks a certain variety I crave in a videogame, I love the overall game play and sound effects. The search-and-destroy feeling is a hard aspect to grasp in a video-game, but Super Battletank does a marvelous job. I would like to see an updated version in about one year.

Dedicated to Desert Storm

This game does not need any introduction! Approximately one year from the distribution of this magazine, Operation Desert Storm started. Considered the most popular war of the United States (if a war can be considered popular), the creators have taken actual film footage of the war and digitized it to create one devastating simulation!

You are in command of an M1A1 Abrams battletank and must oppose the Iraq "elite" forces. Use strategy to plot attacks during the morning, dusk and night hours against the enemy's tanks, choppers, scud launchers and convoys! For war game fans, this cart is a commanding victory of high performance fun!

Absolute Entertainment is bringing this tank simulation to the Super NES. The graphics are first rate and the game is very complex and realistic. A good simulation based on the war in the Gulf.

Following Operation Desert Storm, Absolute rolled out Super Battletank: War in the Gulf for the SNES. Now Genesis tank troopers can play their own war games. This one-player tank simulation throws you into the cockpit of an M1A1 Abrams Battletank that's equipped with all the high- tech battle gear you need to lead a mobile assault.

Get Tanked

Super Battletank: War in the Gulf is meant to be a realistic simulation of desert warfare with 10 hard-nosed missions. The first-person point-of-view accurately conveys both the suspenseful anticipation and the supercharged fast action of a ground assault. When you successfully complete a mission, you attend a press conference, complete with nightly newscast double-talk. Your enemies include Soviet-made T-72 tanks, Soviet Mi-24 HIND helicopters, SCUD missile launchers, and heavily fortified strongholds.

ProTip: To launch a surprise attack, get within firing range, immediately use your smoke screen, and fire your 120 mm cannon. Each time you fire a shell, the smoke clears for an instant, and you can aim your next shot.

Super, Super Off-Road

Don't let anyone tell you that "they don't build tanks like they used to", because this baby's built Abrams tough! You're equipped with 7.62 mm Machine Guns, 120mm Cannons, Laser-guided Shells, a Smoke Screen, and a Night Vision Scope.

You can toggle between two views, a behind-the-dashboard battle screen and a long-range radar map. The graphics in the battle screen aren't as sharp as they were in the SNES version, but they're still pretty decent. The screen's instrument panel has been slightly upgraded from the SNES version and includes a more detailed short-range radar map that displays your tank and the enemy's tanks from an overhead view. This important detail enables you to avoid enemy shots, because you can see which way an enemy's gun is pointed without reverting to the long-range radar map.

Where Have All the Buttons Gone?

The controls of Super Battletank are a little hard to use. To accelerate or decelerate, you have to press a combination of Start and Up or Down. This is a bit tricky when you're in the middle of heavy enemy fire. Also, shooting and steering simultaneously is a little confusing. For example, when you steer left, your guns aim left.

  • Keep close watch on your fuel and ammunition gauges as you plan your attacks.
  • To pass through minefields unscathed, choose the 7.62 mm machine guns, move the sights down to ground level, and shoot mines to clear a path.
  • When your damage is high and you have only one enemy left, use the laser- guided shells. You can destroy most enemies with one missile before they get you.

Diggin' in the Dirt

Super Battletank is a good military strategy game with enough realism to make anyone want to dodge the draft. Don't expect a cheery armor-plated arcade game. This is a challenging test of your least, unlike real combat, you can always play again.

Fans of the 16-bit Battletank games will like this Game Boy version. While the graphics aren't the cart offers undei as you chase helicopters, and SCUD missile launchers around desert.

Tanks a Lot

Subtitled War in the Gulf, Super Battletank puts you in the driver's seat of a well-armed Ml A1 tank. Cockpit displays update your weapon and damage status, while a helpful map locates enemy targets. Unfortunately, the forward-scrolling desert is mostly a blur, as are the quick-moving enemy vehicles that dash in and out of view.

What's more, most of the game is played in virtual silence. Your tank rumbles along, but your own shots and exploding enemies don't get the sonic firepower they deserve. Minimal martial music dresses uplthe mission briefings.

A Round of Gulf

The game has a nice amount of strategy - not so much that it bogs you down in details, but enough to kelp you thinking as you fire your guns and complete the ten increasingly difficult missions. The controls will take some getting used to, because you have to position your tank, select your weapon, and aim your guns at moving targets thfeit blast away at you.

You'll be saying "tanks for the memories" after surviving these desert duels.

ProTips:

  • Refer to the Long-Range Radar Map frequently to locate enemies and Mine Fields. If you move your tank while looking at the map, you can be hit.
  • Enemy tanks move quickly, Try to keep them on the screen, or they'll appear suddenly and begin shooting at you.
  • Use your Laser-Guided Missiles sparingly. They're your most effective weapon, but they're in limited supply.
