You laughed at their TV show. You stole jokes from their movies. But you'll hurl at their eight-bit game. Wayne's World may be fun to visit, but you wouldn't want to play there.

Party Off

This game does have some goofy charm. The boys crack jokes between levels, the manual is full of clever Waynisms, and enemies include a Stack of Barry Manilow Records and Flying T.V. Test Patterns.

Unfortunately, you didn't come to this game to laugh, you came to play, and this is where the game spews. You alternate between the two teenage heroes, Wayne and Garth, as they fight through five urban settings in search of Benjamin, a slimy TV exec. As they walk and jump from the local music store to a nightclub and on to Benjamin's babe lair, the pair Kick and shoot past a weak army of enemies. There's virtually no challenge -- the enemies are dodgeable, hit- table, and beatable as they "approach you. This is remedial game bored beginners.

ProTip: Garth doesn't need to go to the right on Level 2. Avoid the energy-draining fights there and bounce up to the left, where the exit is.

They're Hot Worthy

Great graphics -- NOT! If you wondered why the NES is becoming extinct, take a look at these flat backgrounds and undetailed sprites. In some of the levels --the Gasworks of Level 2, for instance -- you'd have no idea where you were if the manual didn't tell you. The Gasworks is a nightclub? Uh, OK.

As bad as the graphics are, the sounds are even worse. For two guys who love cool music, Wayne and Garth do their fighting to a pretty cheesy soundtrack. The boing and ping sound effects are reminiscent of mid-'80s games, and the only vocal is Wayne's cry of "No way!" when you lose. Great sounds? "No way" is right.

Back to the Basement

Wayne's World is a game you wish you could like, if only because there's the potential for good-natured fun with these average-joe heroes. And with so few NES games coming out, every game needs to be a hit to keep the system alive. Sadly, Wayne's World is not nearly as cool as Wayne thinks it is.

  • Garth can safely stand on some of the Level 1 enemies he's supposed to shoot.
  • Use Wayne's Flip Jump to get behind the Gaswork's Boss.

Game Reviews

From small screen to big screen... to video game screen! Wayne and Garth are partying again - this time on the Super NES!

Our favorite cable dudes are unexpectedly pulled into the video game Zantar the Gelatious Cube! A mysterious purple blob has kidnapped Garth and you must help Wayne save him by twanging your guitar to kill the enemies. Great graphics and sound make this cart...excellent!

While the set-up is pure Wayne's World, the execution of this game is your standard run-and-shoot scroller. The look and feel of the cart's graphics is good, but the lack of real technique left me sort of flat. There's not a lot to interact with and most of the dangers are simply obstacles and not animated enemies.

I have to give THQ one thing, this game does capture the flavor of the movie. However, I like to play a game for its game play rather than for its movie tie in. The game is OK and probably best suited for the younger player, but I didn't find the real challenge other than jumping around. Average, but not great.

There are very few exceptional features in this cart. The game is very amusing and features digitized scenes from the movie including extreme close ups done with Mode 7. The game pay needs work, and there is not much of a game here at all. The graphics and digitized sounds are also high points. Not worthy! Not worthy!

This "game" is certainly in need of help. I didn't find it very enjoyable as there wasn't a game to challenge me. The cinemas at the beginning were very cute and built up my hopes but the game left me flat. The sounds aren't worth talking about, the plot needs a lot, and only the graphics are crisp and clean. Not my type of game.

It's Wayne's World! Video Game! Party Time! Excellent! Wayne and Garth have another TV show, and this time it's on the SNES. The boys have managed to stay out of trouble... NOT! Their antics will keep you going, but the not-so-excellent game play is slightly bogus.

Extreme Close-up

Wayne's bud Garth is gone. He's been kidnapped by a gelatinous purple cube called Zantar in this one-player, side- scrolling adventure. Armed only with an "Axe" guitar that shoots deadly sounds, Wayne must prove himself worthy by rescuing Garth from a fate worse than death -- front row center at an Abba Reunion Concert. Major bummer for Wayne, and even worse for Garth!

Everyone's kung fu fighting in the four familiar settings (Kramer's Music Store, Stan Mikita's Donut Shop, the Gasworks, and Suburbia). Accordions, Bagpipes, Electric Wires, Donut Monsters, and Psycho Hose Beasts tend to hide off-screen and shoot you when you're unaware. The flat backgrounds that camouflage the ammunition don't help the boys, either. This doesn't bode well when you're trying to score, and you get knocked out by sights unseen. It's pail. It's bucket.

ProTip: When you hear the kazoos starting their attack, just stay where you are and they should leave you alone.

It's going to take more than beautitious babes to keep Wayne going. Besides being able to use his guitar sounds to kill enemies, he can find Excellents. Excellents allow Wayne to take an extra hit before he heads to that great stage in the sky. He starts out with five Excellents, but the more he can find, the more he can get hit without dying. He can also find Shwings, which blow up everything on the screen.

Don't be shy. Use your Shwings when you're cornered. Good call!

I Dill Not Know That

Some of the things that keep you going through this long, complex, and sometimes repititious game are Wayne's digitized voice, the humorous opening sequence, and the great digitized graphics, including the heads of Mike Meyers as Wayne and Dana Carvey as Garth. You'll hear all the words that made Wayne famous, like "Not" when he's hit, "Excellent" when he finds one, "Schwing" when he blows up the screen, and "We're not worthy" when he dies. The background music, on the other hand, is worse than AM radio.

At the beginning of the second stage, jump on the Conga drum and sail left. You'll find a 1-up.

Party On, Wayne

If you're fans of Wayne's World, keep watching Saturday Night Live. With one-dimensional game play and average graphics and sound, this game would fall somewhere in-between Wayne and Garth's "Top Ten Worst Video Games of the Year" and their "Top Ten Reasons Why Video Gamers Get Fish Hooked." This game shoots, but eventually chokes.
