Asterix & Obelix XXL

Asterix & Obelix XXL is a game based on the popular comic and tv duo of the same name. While these two may not be a huge deal in the USA. Asterix & Obelix have been entertaining kids in Europe with their beatings of the Romans for decades now. This is part of a series of games that were released on pretty much every platform available at the time. While I am checking it out on PC. It is worth noting that the versions of the PlayStation 2 and GameCube are near identical. Another thing to know is that in certain regions this game is known as Asterix & Obelix – Kick Buttix.

Those Pesky Romans!

The story of the game is not going to knock your socks off or anything like that, but it gets the job done. One day, Asterix & Obelix are out in the woods trying to find their missing dog. They notice a fire, run back to their village and find it in flames and the villagers kidnapped! Of course, this is the doing of those Romans! Well, these two are not going to stand for this and head out to save their friends and put a beating on the Romans.

Silky Smooth

From a presentational point of view, I have to say that Asterix & Obelix XXL holds up pretty well. The game looks like a game from this era, but to be fair the developers have managed to capture the look and feel of the comics and cartoon very well here. I am sure if you are a fan of the series that you will have no complaints about the way the game looks. The soundtrack, on the other hand, I found to be rather aggravating after a while!

Take Them Down

Gameplay-wise what we have here is a fairly straight forward platformer, but that does not mean it is bad. While I would have to say that from a gameplay point of view, Asterix & Obelix XXL is playing it very safe. This is still a rather fun game. I get the impression it is aimed more towards younger gamers as it is very simple. You will get to play as both Asterix & Obelix, but the game does not always let you play as which one you want which I feel was a missed opportunity.

You go to an area, fight a ton of Romans, maybe solve a basic puzzle-like moving an object, flipping a switch, and so on and on occasion, you take on a boss. The boss battles are a lot of fun as the designs of the for lack of a better term “vehicles” the Romans are using is very amusing.

As you play, you can get helmets which you can use to purchase new moves. You have a meter that as it fills will allow you to unleash these new combos you have unlocked.

7.5

I am not going to say that what we have here with Asterix & Obelix XXL is a masterpiece of a game or anything like that. However, it does what it does rather well. It is a very inoffensive game and while it plays pretty much every aspect of it very safe it is harmless enough and it could be worth a playthrough if you are wanting a platformer that is easy to get into.

Pros:

  • The visuals capture the style of Asterix very well
  • The game has a certain charm to it
  • You get to play as both Asterix and Obelix
  • The combat is mindless but can be very satisfying
  • Plenty of combos and stuff to unlock

Cons:

  • The game is rather easy
  • This really should have been a 2 player game!
