Crash of the Titans

Crash of the Titans is an action-platforming game another entry in the long-running Crash Bandicoot franchise. Originally gaining popularity on the PlayStation back in 1996, the series has grown into a wacky, excitable brand with a somewhat sizable fanbase. In Crash of the Titans, you once again hop into the shoes of Crash, spinning and smacking his way through the lush and beautiful Wumpa Islands. Although this entry doubles down on the action, there's still plenty of challenging platforming to expect. While it might not be the jolt of quality that the Crash franchise needs, Crash of the Titans is still an enjoyable adventure all the same.

Main Game Features

  • 20 levels of platforming fun
  • Single-player and cooperative gameplay
  • Colorful action and outrageous characters

Story

Crash of the Titans sees our hero, Crash Bandicoot, once again battling against the evil army of Doctor Cortex as he fights to protect his home of the Wumpa Islands. One day, while Crash is relaxing with his sister Coco and pal Crunch, Doctor Cortex invades the island, kidnapping Coco in the process. Hurrying after them, Crash eventually discovers Cortex and Uka Uka the voodoo mask attempting to siphon powerful Mojo energy from a temple within the forest. There, Cortex unveils his master plan to overtake Wumpa Islands by using the Mojo to create powerful creatures known as Titans. With the help of the Titans, Cortex plans to create an enormous machine capable of dominating the world. As usual, it's up to Crash to stop Cortex and save the world from utter chaos.

Gameplay

Although the perspective is a bit more modern than classic Crash Bandicoot games, the controls in Crash of the Titans feel mostly the same. Playing as Crash, you can run, spin, jump, and bounce your way around levels with fervent speed. Crash has a few new moves as well, including a hover move in the air, along with a wide range of combat abilities. There are five different areas to progress through, including tropical forests, the wild “N.Sanity Island”, and the hazardous lumber yard. Each area is bright, vivid, and full of colorful, brought to life by Crash's excitable movement and speed. A handful of power-ups make things even more intense, further amplifying your speed and strength in fun ways. You can even unlock bonus content such as concept art by finding hidden collectibles scattered throughout the game.

In comparison to past Crash Bandicoot titles, Crash of the Titans is significantly more focused on action and combat. There's still lots of tough jumps to make, calling back to the classic Crash games, but you can expect quite a bit more battling than usual. Instead of hopping on enemies' heads, you'll use both heavy and quick attacks to defeat them.

In addition to smacking through Cortex's scientist minions, you'll fend off the burly Titans. If you're able to wear them down, Crash can even hop on top of a Titan, riding them into battle and using their powers to unlock new areas. The focus on combat might leave some older Crash fans scratching their heads, but if you enjoy smashing some buttons, it'll feel great.

7

Crash of the Titans by no means reinvents the Crash Bandicoot formula, but it does advance it in some modern ways. Combat has been fleshed out, platforming is a bit more lenient, and there are a handful of unlockable goodies to boot. Levels are fun and short enough to be played in quick bursts and the ability to have another player join in with drop-in cooperative play is a treat. Some of these changes work better than others, but Crash of the Titans is still fun despite its missteps. Even the most seasoned of Crash Bandicoot fans should find this modern entry worth a playthrough.

Pros

  • Satisfying combat
  • Good variety of environments
  • Straightforward controls and concept

Cons

  • Lacks the charm of previous games
  • Some sections feel padded out
  • Underwhelming story

Game Reviews

Now and then, popular video game franchises must stray outside their comfort zone to keep interested in the series. Crash of the Titans is that effort that changes the genre from its traditional platforming mechanics to one that integrates a more action-based, beat-em-up approach. It's a new swing for our favorite bandicoot or whatever that orange bi-pedal furry creature is!

This action-adventure game brings a fresh twist to the series, introducing new gameplay mechanics, a humorous storyline, and plenty of epic battles against iconic villains. So let's delve into the various aspects that make Crash of the Titans a worthy entry into a franchise that's brought vigor back to platforming experiences.

That's One Fierce Bandicoot

Crash of the Titans breaks away from the traditional Crash Bandicoot formula, opting for a more action-oriented approach. The game features a mix of platforming, combat, and puzzle-solving, keeping players engaged throughout the adventure. One of the game's most significant innovations is the ability to "jack" and control enemies, utilizing their unique abilities to progress through levels and defeat adversaries.

The game's storyline is engaging and comical, featuring Crash Bandicoot's ongoing battle against the dastardly Dr. Neo Cortex and his army of mutants. Crash's sister, Coco, plays a prominent role in the narrative as they join forces to rescue their captured friends and restore peace to their beloved island. The dialogue is filled with witty banter and humorous exchanges, providing a lighthearted tone that keeps the player entertained from start to finish.

And while the visuals are polished and well-formed, the core issue with the overall gameplay is that both combat and puzzle-solving feel lacking. It's a far cry from the platforming-puzzler expectations that do little to impress when the action is the same throughout most of the game. Players won't have much difficulty beating the game, removing the challenge that typically comes with these titles.

For a series that generally has acclaim with each release, Crash of the Titans feels like a generic beat-em-up game that could fit into about any popular gaming franchise. It's not like it's a terrible game. Still, any fans will feel disappointed without experiencing anything unique or not taking advantage of the standout lore within the greater Crash universe.

Crash and Burn

While Crash of the Titans is a decent addition to the series, it does deviate from the traditional Crash Bandicoot formula. Some die-hard fans may miss the classic linear platforming gameplay, which this installment strays away from. Additionally, the difficulty level may feel more manageable compared to previous entries.

Sometimes you might feel like it might as well be a Dynasty Warriors game, with hordes of foes approaching your protagonist to be eliminated with the same move set. A few hours of this, and honestly, you'll tire of it all. Crash of the Titans is a swing and a miss, but the humor and character lore keep the series propped up to redeem itself in the future.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Colorful visuals bring the Crash universe to life
  • The 'jacking' mechanic does offer something unique to the game
  • Polished gameplay

Cons:

  • Repetitive combat that gets tiresome
  • Lack of puzzles or any innovative game mechanics
  • Enemy AI feels inconsistent
