Fortified Zone

Sharp graphics, large characters, and unique gameplay highlight this maze-shooter from Jaleco. In Fortified Zone, you must infiltrate and conquer four increasingly complex mazes set in an open field, a jungle, an underground cavern, and the enemy fortress.

You control two specially trained agents. Only one agent can appear onscreen at a time; however, you can switch between them at will.

The mazes are large, complex, and crammed with enemy soldiers, artillery, and mutant creatures! Fortunately, a wide assortment of special items pop up along the way ineluding: Power-ups, Weapon Ups, Machine Guns, 3-Way Rifles, Hand Grenades, Flame Throwers, Medicine Kits, and Keys to numerous locked doors. Passwords enable you to restart where you meet your doom.

Two players can link up to conquer Fortified Zone. Each player moves through the maze independently, but they can exchange special items with each other at any time.

Fortified Zone whips up a well-balanced mix of strategy and shoot-em-up action. The graphics are highly detailed, and the 3/4 view puts some pop in the perspective. The sound effects are good and the various soundtracks are catchy. The only complaint is that there should be more levels. Fortified Zone is worth invading.
