Today we are looking at the classic Kung Fu for the NES. This was one of the first games to be released on the NES and it is also one of the first “beat-em-up” style games that would be perfected in the late 80s and early 90s. While this may be a basic game, it is one that is still a lot of fun. Actually, even as late as like 1991, I would pop in a little money in the arcade version of this!

A Kung Fu Master Called Thomas?

Look, nothing against people called Thomas, actually I knew a few good dudes called Thomas. However, when you think of a Kung Fu Master, Thomas is not the name that pops into your head. Anyway, Thomas is a badass and his girl has been kidnapped, and now he needs to make his way through the temple to save her. It is a basic plot, but at the end of the day it is an early to mid-80s game so what do you expect?

Problems Can Be Solved With Kicks & Punches!

The gameplay on offer here is very simplistic, but that is part of the reason why I like it. This temple has five floors and these floors have bad guys and objects that want to hurt you as well as a boss at the end of each one. B punches, A kicks, up jumps and down crouches and that is it. You get more points when you punch an enemy, but you have to let them get closer. The hardest “enemy” in the game are these balls that you have to jump kick.

The controls in the game are responsive enough and it is the kind of game that I can play and get into a Zen-like state as I do. You beat the game and then you play it again and it is a bit more difficult. It is the kind of game you will play until you get bored. Sometimes this can be five minutes, other times you may be here for an hour trying to get a massive high score!

Ahh, The NES Was Young

This was released on the NES in 1985 and as I said, Kung Fu was one of the first games for the console. Still, the graphics do have a fair bit of charm to them. It lacks the finer details of the arcade version, but this game still looks pretty decent. There is not exactly a ton of variety to the visuals, but this is an old-school game and one that I can look at and smile.

That Kung Fu Beat

This game only has a handful of songs and the main one plays the whole time you play the game! This was not uncommon for games back then and I do not mind as this beat is awesome and every time, I play this game, it will end up stuck in my head for the rest of the day. There are not too many sound effects in the game, but the “woosh” of your hits is very satisfying.

There is not really much more I can say about Kung Fu on the NES. It is a classic arcade-style game where the point (well apart from saving your lady) is to get as high a score as possible. It actually holds up pretty well in the gameplay department and it is a very satisfying game to play if you are looking for something quick and easy to get into.

Pros:

  • Thomas is a real badass!
  • The graphics have a real old-school charm to them
  • I love the main music
  • The controls are nice and responsive

Cons:

  • You can beat this game in no time at all
  • If you do not like beat-em-ups, no way you are enjoying this!
