Word to the wise: Wordtris by Spectrum Holobyteforthe Same Boy is an addicting one or two-player Tetris with a Scrabble twist Letters drop from the top of your screen and you try to make words from them. When you complete a word, like completing a line in Tetris, it disappears from the screen.

Plenty of options make this game accessible to everyone. You can set skill levels at Children, Novice, Advanced, or Expert. Each skill has 10 levels. In Advance, you start out spelling three-letter words and switch to four-letter words. In Expert, you have to make four-letter words in all ten levels.

To challenge your vocabulary skills, you can set tough options, such as a time limit, no repeat words, or not being able to see the next falling letter. Wildcard Blocks don't reveal the letter until it hits the ground regardless of your choice of settings. Cherry Bombs, Dynamite Sticks, and Acid Beakers blow up difficult letters such as "Q" and "Z".

You can try to beat your best score or play a group of friends in the Tournament mode, where you pass the Game Boy back and forth and it tallies the separate scores. Either way, Wordtris is as hard to drop as Tetris. Instead of just challenging your coordination and skill, you may have to use a little brain power to get the last word on this cart.

ProTips:

  • If your screen is filled with letters, start moving falling letters to the far left and far right If they land in the middle, game's over.
  • When you find yourself wordless, let the letters fall where they may. Sometimes this produces unexpected words, like "ecru."

The Soviet Union may have collapsed, but spin-offs of the addictive hit Tetris have not! This time, all the blocks are the same size, but instead of assembling shapes, you must assemble words!

If you spell a key word correctly, all the blocks on the screen disappear. The game boasts a 50,000-word dictionary, so have those $20 words handy! Each level has a different background, showing a different scene from a circus act. Play alone, against another player, three players, or with another player in the Cooperative Mode! You can also select the level of difficulty as well as an option that doesn't allow you to repeat the same word! Wordtris is a great game that entertains while it educates!

The latest in Spectrum Holobyte's line of Tetris spin-offs, Wordtris succeeds in combining the addictive play of the original tris game with an educational angle that teaches as it plays. Boasting a 50,000 word dictionary to recognize even the most obscure language, each level of Wordtris encourages players to better their vocabulary in an effort to stop the rising stack of letters.

Although I love Tetris, I haven't found any of the follow-up titles to have anywhere near the same level of appeal. This game isn't much different, complicating the addictive qualities of Tetris with unnecessary demands on how items are placed. On its own Wordtris would be average, compared to Tetris it falls way short.

Wow, another puzzle game on the S-NES! I like the concept of being able to actualy think in a game but the system seems to be underutilized. The vocabulary is exceptional and that must be where all the memory has gone to. A fun way to expand a player's vocabulary! Give it a try!

7.0

Come on now! I liked Tetris, but isn't this taking it a bit too far? Sure the game play is similar, but it just isn't the same. The backgrounds are interesting and the playing concept is different than 90% of the SNES carts out there. A change of pace that will stimulate your mind as well as your reflexes.

7.0

While Wordtris really puts your mind to work, it quickly becomes clear that this is a lot of power for a GameBoy-type game. Still, for those of us who like to challenge our minds as well as our reflexes, Wordtris will be waiting. One problem: it may be a pretty smart game, but it doesn't recognize all the words it should.
