If you were five or under back in 1999, Play With The Teletubbies was probably one of the greatest video games you ever played and you may have some nostalgia for it! Back in the 80’s, 90’s, and even earlyish 00’s pretty much every major license got a video game adaptation. However, with this being a pre-school license, it is a little more unusual that this would get one. Yet, these freaking weirdos took over the world and had parents fighting over the toys in the toy store so it is not all that surprising that we got a video game.
More Of An Experience
It would be so easy to look at Play With The Teletubbies and just say that this is absolute hot garbage and at the time many video game publications and early gaming websites turned their noses up at this. However, looking back now, I actually think that the developer did as good a job as they could have done with a game based on The Teletubbies. The thing with this is that I would say it is more like an interactive experience than a straight up game. It features many elements of the show, with added interactive steps if that makes sense. I guess kids at the time would have felt like they were controlling an episode of the show.
I See You!
The gameplay that is on offer in Play With The Teletubbies is not exactly deep, but you do have to remember the audience that this game was made for! This is a game that is aimed at preschoolers so the gameplay is very basic. You can play basic things like a game of hide and seek which I am sure little kids would have fun with and you can also do this train game and screw around making tubby toast. It is all simple and inoffensive stuff and very repetitive, but to be fair, little kids like repetitive things so it is hard to knock the game for that.
Picking Your Favorite
Play With The Teletubbies does let kids play as all of the Teletubbies and one thing that is actually kind of cool is that there is a “favorite things” section of the game and this makes playing as all the different Teletubbies worthwhile as they all get a different thing that is their favorite. Granted, this is super shallow, but it does make each of Teletubbies feel a bit more unique and that is something kids are sure to have loved. Apart from this though, it really does not matter which one of the Teletubbies kids played as.
An Interactive Episode
I mentioned before how I felt that Play With The Teletubbies was more of an experience than a game and I do feel like it is presented like an episode. There are FMV clips of kids playing and learning just like you would get in the show and there is the weird baby in the sun, the narrator, and the various sound effects you would expect. For a PlayStation 1 era game, it looks pretty decent and I feel like they captured the soul of the show very well. Granted, you can see all this game has to offer in an hour, but kids would happily watch the same Teletubbies episodes over and over again so I am sure they were more than ok playing this over and over again too.
Looking back at some of the reviews and press that this game got is kind of strange. I think that many professional reviewers were way to harsh on Play With The Teletubbies as I have certainly played way worse licensed games than this one! As a game that is aimed at preschool aged kids, I think that they did a fantastic job here. If you were a parent gamer back in 99 and early 00’s I am sure this was a great way to share your gaming passion with your kids.
Pros:
- It feels like an interactive episode of the show
- They capture the spirit of the show really well
- You can play as all of the Teletubbies
- There is a little bit of individuality with the Teletubbies
Cons:
- The game is as basic as you would expect
- As it is a PlayStation 1 game, the visuals are super jaggy
