Baseball Stars 2

After a few minutes of playing the latest NES Romstar game, Baseball Stars II, you'll feel time-warped back to 1989. That was the year SNK sold over a million of the all-time great NES sports game. Baseball Stars.

Baseball Stars wasn't the prettiest looking baseball game ever made. It didn't have digitized voices, real pro baseball players, or real pro teams. But despite all of that, it was, without a doubt, one of the most addictive baseball carts ever made.

Unlike its competitors. Baseball Stars had a battery backup that enabled you to create a team from scratch, save your team stats, and even name the players. If you wanted Will Clark on first base, you got him!

As you played, you earned money each time your team won, which you used to improve your players' skills. With Baseball Stars you were both player and general manager.

Déjà Vu in 92

Flash forward to 1992. SNK is no longer a Nintendo licensee, and Romstar is releasing Baseball Stars II. The good news for Baseball Stars' fans is the sequel is a lot of fun. The bad news is it isn't very different from the original.

In fact, there are only three key differences -- you can choose from four stadiums in BSII (BS 1 only had one stadium); you can shift your outfield formation left or right (BS-I outfielders always played "straightaway"); and you can no longer name your players. Other than that, Baseball Stars II is an exact duplication of Baseball Stars I.

ProTips:

  • Shift outfielders left versus right-handed batters and right versus left-handed batters.
  • You can start with a more powerful team by using the "Make Team" and "Trade Player" options. Start with a base team, and then create five "dummy" teams. Each dummy team starts with approximately $30,000. Use the money to improve one or two players. Then trade your weak base team players for the improved players on the dummy teams. You can do this over and over by removing the dummy teams you've picked dean and creating new teams to leech from.

The Old Ball Game

If you already own the original Baseball Stars, you'll be disappointed that the sequel isn't much more than a clone. If you don't own an NES baseball game, this is a great catch. Because of its battery backup and great controls, you'll never get tired of it. Baseball Stars II is a great way to get into the swing of the 1992 baseball season without worrying about contract negotiations or player injuries. Isn't that every baseball fan's dream?

Home Run Fun!

All fans of the original shall be glorified when they see this cart. Baseball Stars 2 is ready to make its debut!

There have been many changes to the game that an original player may notice when starting with this new title. First of all, there have been six new teams added to the roster with names such as the Texas Towers, the Torrance Tigers and many others. Ultimately, there is a grand total of 18 different teams offered! Think that is great stuff, guy? Well, get a load of the next option - team customization! You can literally create your own team from scratch! You can also buy and sell team members whenever necessary!

There are two different screen views in which to take in the action, providing for plenty of playability! First, there is a batting/pitching view that allows you to see all of the bases and who is on them (let alone who is batting and the pitcher). Then, when you hit the ball, it switches over to an overhead perspective!

There are options that you can choose to utilize such as playing a single game or league games.

Also, included are four stadiums to choose from to allow a more "diverse" and realistic feel to the game. Plus, there is the two player mode allowing you to challenge your best buds to take you on!

This is baseball at it's finest. Close ups, fights, and real voice announcing are just a few of the exciting features found in this sequel of sequels. Play against a computer or a friend. 2 player simultaneous action.

Baseball Stars II is a sequel to SNK's original title, Baseball Stars with additional game-play features.
