Need some great shootin' action to ease your way back into the school routine? Spend your last days of summer flying the Halbard fighter of BioMetal, Activision's thrilling new side- scrolling shooter. With great graphics, challenge, and sound, SNES shooters have rarely had it so good.

Pedal to the BioMetal

Beginners beware: This game's not for the weak of thumb. BioMetal is a top-notch one-player game that takes you through five challenging stages of airborne combat on a colorful alien planet. Your enemies are the bizarre cyborgs of the BioMetal race, and they're not easy to kill. These strange, twisted forms swoop in from all directions, firing incessantly and filling the screen with danger. The huge bosses are genuine thumb-busters.

To battle the metallic foes, your ship is armed with forward-firing missiles. As you blow up enemies, you easily pick up Shields, Bombs, and backward-firing armaments. The Shields are particularly effective, because they can also be thrown as devastating offensive weapons.

ProTip: To nail the Stage 1 Boss, deflect its shots with your Shield, and then fire your missiles at its head. The Boss can't hit you if you stay in the top-left comer of the screen.

BioCongestion

If you're an advanced space jockey, you'll really have to come out firing in BioMetal. The screen gets busier than the freeway at rush hour. At times, it simultaneously: throws almost two-dozen enemies at you. It's hard to appreciate the imaginative graphic detail when you're immediately distracted by the next two or three villains. Occasional slowdown testifies to the challenging, sometimes distracting, congestion.

A dynamic soundtrack by the rap group 2 Unlimited adds to the impact. Music is often a distraction in a fast-pace shooter, but here the driving rhythms only heighten the intensity. This is one game where you won't want to turn the music off, only UP.

  • In Stage 2, this snaky alien will wrap around you if you head for the upper-left corner of the screen.
  • Throw your Shields to knock out Stage 2's mid-level boss.

Prince of Thunder

As good as the graphics are, they're not perfect. For instance, Stage l is merely a solid bank of steel-grey clouds. What's more, the graphics seem similar to those in other shoot-em-up games, namely Lightening Force for the Genesis. (There's even one of those inside-the-alien-world levels that we've seen before.)

Control is yet another troublesome area. It takes one button to shoot, another to raise the Shield, one more to elongate the Shield, and still another to throw your Shield. Face it, in a shooter you just want to shoot as quickly and as easily as possible -- no more, no less. This is one game that could use some help from a turbo controller.

  • Beat the Stage 3 Boss by staying centered in its line of fire. If you go up or down, it'll throw extra missiles at you.
  • Avoid the pillars in Stage 4. If you linger behind them, you'll be vulnerable and won't be able to see your fighter.
  • Use your Shields against the Stage 4 Boss. Only its head is vulnerable.

BioGold

Despite these quibbles, BioMetal is still one of the year's best, and hardest, SNES shooters. If BioMetal isn't quite Lords of Thunder, it's still a Prince of Thunder. There's a lot to like in this BioBlast.

The special fleet of the Galactic Council was later attacked by the aliens during their digs. Now you and your co-pilot are ordered to use a prototype starship hailed to be the most awesome weapon known to man against the aliens. Good Luck!

MISSILE SETUP

There are three different missile configurations for the Multi Fighter. Choose the missile setup which suits your space dogfighting style.

WEAPONS SYSTEMS

The armament you choose for the Multi Fighter can be upgraded up to three levels for super destruction.

BioMetal is a single-player horizontal scrolling shooter game released on June 1, 1993 for the Super NES (SNES). The game features six different weapons to combat the BioMetals, an extraterrestrial race determined to destroy the human race. The gameplay is very similar to that of the R-Type series. Their are two pairs, one for lasers and the other for missiles, of three upgrades for your weapons.

A fleet was sent on a mission to find more natural resources, but they never returned. Their last transmission reveals that the enemy' created one last experiment. This experiment is a combination of the aggressive nature of animals combined with the efficiency of machines.

That awesome shooter Bio-Metal is finally coming to the States, compliments of the folks at Activision. This intense shooter has you taking the battle to the alien forces before they could reach Earth and her colonies. Your ship is an advanced prototype, untested in combat, but our best bet in destroying the alien armada. It is capable of being powered up with special icons found throughout the battlefield, that give it massive firepower. Your ship will need all the power it can muster, as the enemies are plentiful, not to mention very powerful. The bosses and midbosses are really gigantic, and will possibly destroy your ship. Can you take control of Bio-Metal, the first cybernetic fighter ship?

Are you getting tired of alien colonies from distant parts of the galaxy coming to Earth and attempting to take it over? Not any more! In Bio Metal, you fly to the alien colonies and kick their butt for a change!

Not only is the story a bit different from many other shooters on the market, Bio Metal also features a unique power-up system to add even more excitement!

The number of power-ups collected depends upon how well you are doing throughout the game. If you seem to be able to breeze through without losing many lives, the power-ups can really become scarce. However, if you're really bad and you seem to die from nearly everything, the computer will compensate and the power-ups are literally shoved down your throat!

Now about the game! There are eight levels with three sections in between. In these sections, you must face a mid boss before coming across the biggest and baddest boss of the level.
