Back in the NES times, Duck Hunt really did add a lot of fun and an even bigger interactive element with the Zapper. A rifle you could use to actually aim at the TV and hunt the bucks, but it was something new and unique. This mechanic of shooting flying objects has been around for a long time in gaming, and you could actually compare it to Space Invaders, Galaga, and many more. However, here we'll be talking about one of the most basic examples of these types of games. Chicken Shoot, a game originally released for PC and GameBoy Advance that later on got a release for the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

The… Plot?

When it comes to Chicken Shoot the name basically says it all about what happens in the game, from the plot to the gameplay. But they did try to add a little basic story though, it's just way too simple to make it a real story. Basically, you play as a farmer, and you have a big problem with the chickens that have gone wild, so you just have to get rid of them by shooting them up.

There are different levels and they change the environment to fit places all over the world. And that’¿s pretty much all there is to say about the plot. The mechanics are as basic as they can get, there are chickens on the screen and you have to shoot ‘em up. You get to use some special attacks too, but the chickens also have some special techniques to use against you, so be careful, this is an all-out war. As for the score and all that, it is quite simple, the more chickens you get the more points you earn, that’s it.

Is less always better?

Keeping the same basic mechanics seems to work for some franchises, for we still get new Pac-Man games that are basically the same as the original. The keyword there is “basic”, as these new games are constantly adding tons of new content and even game modes. Even if the game looks really simple, there’s a lot more than what meets the eye.

When it comes to Chicken Shoot, it’s just as simple as it looks, and it’s too similar to a game that was released almost two decades earlier. Sure, the visuals are much better, but the basic game and mechanics are what you’d expect from a minigame. Getting an entire game based on just this is not really a good idea now.

Chicken run is easily one of the simplest, most boring, and repetitive games you'll play. If you get in on the Wii it's horrible, the GBA version is slow, and the PC version feels like cheap bloatware. There isn't much positive to say about this title, it could probably be somewhat fun for the first few minutes you play it but don't expect much.

The only possible way this could be fun is for the youngest ones of the house since it could be used to keep them interested in something for a while. If you're not part of that audience, then you'll do better by skipping this one.

On a more positive note, the animations and character designs are very cartoony and nicely animated. This could be the most positive thing this game has going for it.

Pros

  • Alright animations and cartoony characters

Cons

  • Boring
  • Repetitive
  • It gets old really fast
  • Far too simple
  • Not much content
