Once again, the bumbling bionic policeman of cartoon fame pits his outrageous mechanical virtues against the sinister Doctor Claw and the notorious criminal organization, M.A.D. (which stands for Mean And Dirty). Even if you think you're too cool for the cartoon, don't turn off this SNES game. True-to- the-toon graphics and brain-crunching challenges make Inspector Gadget attractive, though the game is probably too tough for younger players.

Penny-Pinching Villainy

Inspector Gadget cartoon fans know the story line: Gadget's neice Penny's in trouble again! This time, the mysterious Claw and his M.A.D. agents have whisked her away, leading Gadget through a complicated seven-stage chase.

Fighting M.A.D.

The game play centers around the Inspector, but Gadget's cartoon colleagues are around, including his resourceful canine sidekick, Brain, who occasionally lends a helping paw. In keeping with the 'toon's kid appeal, Gadget's game play is aggressive yet decidedly non-lethal: You just punch the bad guys out. The bad guys -- M.A.D. agents, beasts, and robots -- aren't plentiful, but they're potent. One punch, bite, or hit knocks Gadget's clothes off. A second hit sends him back to the beginning of the stage in just his shorts.

ProTip: Make Gadget use his magnifying glass often. You never know when or where hidden items will appear.

Bust up the stone blocks and you uncover icons for eight Hat gadgets, such as the Helicopter (for short-range flying), the Arrow Gun (for long-range bopping), and the Suction Cup Gun (for wall climbing). To power your head gear, you must break blocks to find Hat icons.

Claws Encounters

This game tests your mettle and Gadget's metal with a ton of imaginative obstacles and traps. Shifting snowstorms, wicked platform jumps, spike traps, and tricky trap doors are just a few of the plentiful perils that plague your progress. Finding the stage exits is definitely no sure thing, either. To add urgency to these proceedings, each stage has a time limit, too.

  • The chandelier is the key to finally escaping the haunted house.
  • Four Blue Propeller icons turn your transportation into invincible protection.
  • Hats max out at 99, so save unbusted blocks until you need them.
  • When you come across solitary blocks and other items attached to a wall, try to bust 'em. Sometimes they hide helpful items.

To escape a stage, you must face challenges that will make intermediate gamers cry for mommy. The mad Doctor appears (hidden in his chair, naturally) to punish your pride with weird weapons, such as Gadget-seeking candle flames or a huge Gadget-slicing pendulum/scythe. You'll need your thinking cap, your dexterity, and the game's easy-to-use controls to master this game. You must use five of the six control pad buttons and the directionals, but it's easy to make precision jumps and fire up your gadgets.

  • Use the self-propelled Little Gadgets to get M.A.D. foes in hard-to-reach places.
  • Gadget's arm can grab items from afar. Brain icons extend the range of Gadget's bionic limbs.
  • At the beginning of Stage Two, find this underground ice ledge and a hidden warp zone.
  • Hit this button combo to bop overhead objects: B, then Up and Y. Remember, Brain icons extend the range of your bopper.

Inspect the Sights and Sounds

Gadget fans will go ga-ga over the graphics. Gadget, Brain, Penny, and the M.A.D. men look like they stepped right out of the TV set. Every Gadget gadget displays its own animated flair, and you play against great-looking backgrounds.

The sounds are in tune with the game play, but you'll miss the catchy Gadget theme song and, of course, Gadget's distinctive voice (that's Don Adams, TV trivia buffs, a la Get Smart's Agent 86). The sound effects are minimal.

Great Gadget

Inspector Gadget is an action game from the classic mold, but that doesn't mean it's moldy. The tough obstacles will turn your thumbs green, so tiny tykes ought to stick to watching Gadget on the tube. For Gadget fans and dedicated action gamers alike, the conclusion is elementary:

Go, go Gadget SNES!

Game Reviews

Hot off the heels of the release of the movie with the same name, Dragon is a martial arts game with style. Fight your way through different and exotic locales all over the world as you attempt to improve your fighting style. You can play alone or with another player as you hone your fighting skills against the best the world has to offer. Use a variety of kicks and punches as well as some truly spectacular special moves to defeat your enemies. You can even execute combinations of different moves to really finish 'em off!

The graphic capabilities of the Super NES are really put to the test on this one! Expect Dragon to be a huge hit (no pun intended) with fans of fighting games!

Dragon View is the short-awaited t sequel to Drakkhen for the Super NES. It's everything the first one was...more or less. This game has a hard time making up its mind about what it wants to be: RPG, action game, or virtual reality walk-through.

Have Sword, Will Travel

It starts out like any other day in any other timeless RPG. A young apprentice, just beginning to get his sword wet, watches as an evil force named Argos kidnaps his girlfriend and lays waste to the land. A job like that must pay pretty well, because it happens in every other RPG.

As the apprentice, you travel from place to place, gathering information and helping villagers with their problems, kind of like a medieval sword- swingin' therapist. You eventually come face to face with your own worst nightmare.

A Ghoul With a View

Most Of the action in Dragon View takes place in a half-screen, side-scrolling view. The main character sprite also moves in and out of the background to enter doorways or talk to inhabitants. The game switches to a first-person polygon perspective when you walk from town to town. The sprites possess the right amount of animation to make them come alive, like a little girl swinging her legs from a barrel, or the love-struck shopkeeper, but overall, there's nothing really View-worthy.

The sounds are your basic RPG medley -- heroic, brave...and bland.

That's okay, because you need all your concentration for the fighting -- the enemies aren't lightweights. You may find yourself hoping that your girlfriend, Katarina, has a good health insurance plan.

ProTip: Stop at temples in. every town. Besides saving your game, the temple dude has valuable information for you.

It Drags On

Although Dragon View sports several views and intricate game play (you can't progress in some parts until you talk to certain people), it falls short of breaking any new RPG ground. The hit points, experience levels, magic points, and weapon changes of standard RPGs are here, but you'll yearn for the days of yore...and maybe some good old-fashioned, monster-bashing, Might and Magic action.

  • The Storehouse is full of more than dynamite! Stay calm and slash away!
  • Use your compass to get around, but don't be afraid to venture off the road. Beware of white puffs of smoke -- there are scorpions inside.
  • Jump and slash when you attack enemies. You have better chances of a victory when you're airborne.
  • Go left after talking to Tylon and take on the quest tom this young girl. She needs fruit from Mt. Galys.
