Gundam Seed Destiny

There are a ton of Gundam games out there, but I would wager that Gundam Seed Destiny for the Game Boy Advance is one that not too many people are familiar with. Putting giant mechs on a little GBA may seem like a bit of a stretch, but by making this more of a fighting game, they somehow made it all work.

Ok, Who Lost The Story?

One of the stranger things about Gundam Seed Destiny is that the main game mode is called Story Mode, but there is no story to be had here! To be fair, fighting games during this time were not full of story like they are these days. Still, if you are going to have a story mode, you could at least put a bit of story in there. Each character gets a little ending, but that is all the story you really get here.

Modes As Tall As A Gundam

For a mobile fighting game, Gundam Seed Destiny is surprisingly stacked with game modes. We already touched on the story mode, but this game has a very impressive, 9 different modes you can select from the main screen. The other what I would class as “main mode” is the challenge mode where you pick a Gundam and you have to do various challenges such as hitting a certain combo.

You also have a training mode, survival mode, a shop, and more! It is quite impressive just how much stuff they were able to cram into this game. It is certainly got more than enough game modes to keep you busy for a while that is for sure.

Hit Me Two Times Baby!

The control method here is simple, but it works very well. You have a ranged attack and a melee attack which are used by A and B. L and R let you do your boost as well as your special moves. The fighting in this game is very quick and each character does not exactly have the most varied amount of moves. However, as the battles are so quick, you do not get bored.

The game starts you off with 12 characters, but you can unlock many more, there are over 20 characters in this game. Again, for a mobile fighting game, this is pretty impressive and most of your favorite characters from Gundam Seed are represented here.

Small In Stature, Big In Heart

Bringing something as visually spectacular to the Game Boy Advance is a bit of a tall task, but I do feel that Gundam Seed Destiny manages to do it with some style. It has a very cool animated look to it and if you are a fan of the series, the different mechs and characters are all instantly recognizable. It has a fun, almost “cute” style to the visuals and I really do like it.

8.5

I know that a Gundam fighting game on a hand-held may seem like a recipe for disaster, but I think they did a hell of a job with Gundam Seed Destiny. This game is fun to play, it has a ton of modes so it will keep you coming back for a while and it looks pretty good too! This is one underrated fighting game that does not get the love it deserves.

Pros:

  • The game has many different game modes
  • I enjoyed how fast-paced the fighting was
  • It has a stacked roster of characters
  • The control scheme works very well

Cons:

  • The combat is fun, but also it is simple
  • The soundtrack is completely forgettable
