The Jackie Chan Adventures: Legend of the Dark Hand game for the Game Boy Advance is based on the awesome TV series. I was in college when this was on TV, but I still made sure to watch it when it was on. It had a ton of charm to it and a wicked sense of humor that just really clicked with me. One of the most surprising things about this show is that both the video games released that were based on it were pretty fun.

You Steal From Me?

There is a story here and it is rather weak if I am being honest, but it gives you a reason to be doing what you are doing and punching what you are punching. The story in Jackie Chan Adventures: Legend of the Dark Hand is set during the first couple of seasons of the TV show. Uncle has had a scroll stolen from his store and it is up to Jackie to get it and the other missing scrolls back.

You Are Looking, Good Jackie!

The presentation here is pretty solid. It is a 2D game, but it still manages to capture the look and feel of the animated series very well. The character models look great, but it is the animation that really impressed me. It is the little things like the way a fire hydrant spits out water or the way an umbrella reacts when Jackie smashes someone in the head with it that really makes the game stand in the graphics department. Sadly, the music is not as good as the visuals and neither is the sound effects.

Streets Of Jackie

The gameplay in Jackie Chan Adventures: Legend of the Dark Hand for the Game Boy Advance is very similar to games like Streets of Rage and Final Fight. The best comparison I can actually give it is with the 2007 TMNT game as they both have a very similar feel. Jackie has a limited set of moves, but as you progress through the game and collect scrolls you can learn new combos and moves so the progression as you go through the game is great.

The difficulty is just right for a scrolling beat em up in my opinion. The game is challenging, but not too frustrating and the bosses put up one heck of a fight. One thing I thought was really cool was the way that Uncle would give you advice on how to beat bosses. Once you beat the game, there is not really anything else to it except playing on a higher difficulty.

If you are a fan of games such as Final Fight, Streets of Rage and as I mentioned before, TMNT. You will enjoy the experience that Jackie Chan Adventures: Legend of the Dark Hand is offering on the Game Boy Advance. It is a fun time while it lasts and I am not saying it is the kind of game you would play through time and time again. However, it is certainly worth checking out and going all the way through at least once.

Pros:

  • It captures the feel of the TV show very well
  • Jackie Chan is awesome and that is a fact
  • The fighting feels great
  • Plenty of levels to kick butt in
  • The difficulty feels just right

Cons:

  • The music gets annoying fairly quickly
  • Not much in the way of replay value here
