Though not as intensely fun as Virtua Racing, Mario Andretti Racing finishes in the money as a top competitor. It's the most strategic, option-laden game since last year's acclaimed Nigel Mansell's World Championship.

Super Mario Cars

Unlike Virtua Racing, which is all speed and thrills, Andretti Racing is a game for the thoughtful, more sophisticated driver. This Super Mario provides ample rewards for savvy gamers who like to be able to choose the right tires to suit a specific track.

ProTip: Take your first few laps He'll help you execute maneuvers such as a Sprint-Car Slide.

Abundant options are the strength of Andretti Racing. You can select three types of racing experiences -- Indy cars on twisty tracks, stock cars on a mixture of simple and complex courses, and sprint cars on big dirt ovals. Before the race, you customize virtually every aspect of your car from the engine to the tranny to the paint. During the race, you have plenty to think about, such as deciding how far you can go between pit stops and picking the right time to draft a car ahead of you. Throughout the race, your car handles smoothly and precisely as it executes your most subtle moves.

Mario's World

Increasing your involvement in the races is the multiple-view feature. Prerace options include the ability to choose track-level Nose Cam or behind-the-car Chase Cam views. Midrace, you can switch between split-screen- rear, race-leader, and overhead camera angles without pausing. You'll need to switch viewing angles constantly to look ahead for approaching turns and behind for approaching drivers.

Don't try to cut corners to slow yourself down.

The graphics provide good realism in other ways, too. Sparks fly when you graze a rail, the backgrounds have distinctive details for each track, and your crew jumps into action when you pull into the pits.

Likewise, the sounds create a believable racing environment. You hear your own Indy car rev through its six gears, plus you can hear the whining engines of approaching competitors. Screeching tires and metallic collisions add to the atmosphere.

Kick Some Chassis

Whattaya know, a great Mario game on the Genesis! Mario Andretti Racing provides a realistic, satisfying driving experience. Strap yourself into this cockpit (especially in the exciting two- player competition), and you'll understand why Mario Andretti is a racing legend.

Game Reviews

If you're one of those people prone to keeping candlelight vigils outside public toilets sprayed ten years previously by one of your heroes - or, to be more specific, if you're a saddo fan of Mario Andretti himself - you'll obviously love this game. As per usual with EA Sports titles the presentation is excellent, with suitably annoying music and a truck-full of FMV sequences - including a series of interviews with Super Mario himself. Players can choose between stock car and IndyCar racing, and either take a quick spin around any of the tracks on offer or tackle a full season. The graphics are predictably good (with 30 acceleration), and the sense of speed is excellent as the landscapes hurtle by.

Andretti Racing certainly deserves a minor commendation for being of high quality, though with shelves already heaving with similar racing titles it's difficult to see this one keeping up with the leaders. If you have an above entry-level PC and want a lightweight racing game then do at least spare this a passing thought.

One of racing's most hallowed drivers is now out to make a name for himself in the world of computer gaming. It's probably safe to go ahead and etch that name in stone. Exploring and then dominating new territory is a hallmark of Mario Andretti's splendid 33-year career.

Widely acknowledged as the greatest racecar driver in history, Andretti has scored victories on nearly every circuit in the racing world. He's won a national dirt- track championship, stock-car racing's Daytona 500, endurance sports-car racing's Sebring 12- Hour, Indy-car racing's Indianapolis 500, and a Formula One world championship.

The challenge for Electronic Arts when making Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge was to translate Andretti's incredible expertise into a sophisticated but playable game. EA responded admirably, producing a game that boasts a wide range of features and a very satisfying driving simulation.

You start out as a rookie dirt- track driver who needs a sponsor -which, not coincidentally, is how Andretti began. Once you've proven you can win in the sprint-car series, you move up to modifies, then to stock cars, prototypes, Formula Ones, and, finally, Indy cars.

On the pro circuits, you'll have to prove yourself over and over again, just as Andretti did. It's the only way to graduate to racing's higher ranks. The competitions are patterned after real races on actual circuits. To make it to a major race, you have to qualify in a preliminary race.

Many of the tracks are as famous as the men who race them. You can choose from LeMans, Pocono, Indianapolis, Monte Carlo, and Daytona, among others. Each one is designed to represent its real-life counterpart in great detail - size, appearance, reference points, grandstands, and banked turns.

Mario Andretti has something for just about everyone. Action fans will find plenty of high-speed thrills and chills. Simulation buffs can try out different cars on a wide range of tracks. And role-playing enthusiasts get the chance to work their way up from rags to riches, just like the now-legendary Super Mario.

Mario Andretti Racing by EA Sports is a new type of racing game for the Sega Genesis that features three types of race cars: Sprint, Indy and Stock, with the option of tearing it up on three circuits with five tracks per circuit. The game is one- or two-player head-to-head and features some great options such as an EA Sports garage where you can upgrade car parts from race to race, and also a Career Mode where you and another player can track your stats for all of the different cars and courses.
