Pokemon Emerald

The Gameboy Advance had so many titles you could play one a day for years, and The Pokémon Company is one of the most successful media companies in the world. Creating anime, manga, toys, card games and of course our favorite, video games. So if you had to choose just one main Pokemon game to play in the GBA, well then Pokémon Emerald is the way to go. So, let's talk about it.

About the game

In the main series third title for the GBA, we're back in Hoenn for a slightly different adventure. As in most pokemon games, we start the game when we move into this small town in the region and we chose our first Pokémon. After rescuing Professor Elm he'll offer us to keep one of the three starters Treecko, Mudkip or Torchic.

Once we have our starter Pokémon our adventure begins, traveling throughout the Hoenn region, exploring caves, sailing the seas and sky. Catching different Pokémon in our travels and getting all the gym badges. But it's not a peaceful adventure, since there's the menace of Team Aqua and Team Magma, and we're going to have to fight them.

While Team Aqua intends to flood the world with the help of legendary Pokémon Kyogre, Team Magma intends to dry out the world with Groudon. But we're also going to meet the legendary dragon Pokémon Rayquaza, who is said to have once ruled over these two forces of nature.

Third time's the charm

The main RPG Pokémon usually do receive these special entries that mix the main things of the previous versions into a definitive package. Before Pokémon Emerald there was Crystal and Yellow, doing the same thing in the past regions.

While Emerald doesn't necessarily bring too many new things into the series, it does combine everything that made Ruby and Sapphire great and take it to the next level. Not every pokemon is available in the game, but all of the version exclusives from Ruby and Sapphire are here this time.

Review

Pokémon Emerald was, to the date of release, the best Pokémon game you could get. All the Pokémon from Ruby and Sapphire were available, the three legendary pokémon and two evil teams in the same story. The gym battles were exciting and the music incredible. This version, along with the other GBA entries, added so many new things to the series, that going back to the older games seems boring by comparison,

  • Graphics and Visuals: Pokémon games have never been especially known for their amazing visuals. In Emerald the art is amazing, and the Pokémon designs were great. Rayquaza is still one of the coolest legendary Pokémon in the whole series. The sprites were clear and nicely done, with beautiful bright colors.

  • Gameplay: The double battles, PokéBlocks, Pokémon Contest, awards, ribbons, having your own customizable hideout. Pokémon Emerald had an amazing list of new things for the series, and while most of them were already available in Ruby and Sapphire, Emerald added the Battle Frontier, to make things even better. Strategy, collectibles, unlockables and dozens, even hundreds, of hours of gaming await you in this game.

  • Sound: The GBA sound chip isn't the best thing about the console, but even with that, the game delivers some amazing music. Great themes, special songs for different situations and an amazing atmosphere. Pokémon Emerald is one of the best deals in Pokémon games.

Game Reviews

Explore the world of Pokemon through the world of Pokemon Emerald, an adventure with the world's cutest monsters. Explore locations, catch the rarest Pokémon, and train your own army to become the champion of your region.

A small gift

The story begins in Littleroot Town, the protagonist's new home, after moving from another region. The hero's father is the new mentor of the Pokémon Training Hall. The whole family goes to meet Professor Birch. However, the acquaintance with the professor and his child does not work out too well, as the whole company is attacked by a wild pokemon. For saving him, the professor gives the hero three starting pokémon:

  • Treecko
  • Mudkip
  • Torchic

Fulfill the single dream of all Pokémon trainers and become a regional champion, beating even your battle buddy. Or pursue the famous Ash and collect all the famous Pokémon of the region. Who knows, maybe your unusual companion would allow you to win all the top spots in the league of champions.

World Series

Dreams, however, may be interrupted by a battle between two pokémon, Kyogre and Groudon. The unruly waves of the raging ocean and the unchanging hard smoothness of the earth. When the conflict between pokémon that can control two such powerful elements is transferred to your home region, will you step up to defend it? Use your trainer skills and wits to tame the raging waves of the ocean and stop the threatening shaking of the land.

Pokeballs are more powerful than weapons

The gameplay is not unlike the rest of the Pokemon series. Armed with your starting pokémon and a mountain of empty pokéballs, go in search of new pokémon. Catch and train both common and rare Pokémon. Challenge dueling training room owners and work your way to your goal through a series of victories and defeats. In Pokemon Emerald, particularly diligent trainers will manage to catch all the third-generation Pokemon. Catch them all and become the best.

Legendary Pokémon have awakened and begun to figure things out right in the middle of a residential continent. Only a trainer who has begun his journey can't stop them. Or can he? Find out in the Pokemon game - Pokemon Emerald.

Whether you’ve played a Pokémon game or not, you've no doubt heard about the franchise and how popular it is. Pokémon games are beloved around the world, and Pokémon Emerald is no different. Let’s jump straight into talking about the gameplay and what to expect if you’ve never played a Pokémon game before.

The Hoenn Region

Mainline Pokémon games all follow the same kind of structure where your goal is to catch Pokémon and level them up so that you can become strong enough to take on the various gym leaders in the region. You also get a Pokédex to complete which is a digital encyclopedia that stores information on all the Pokémon you encounter on your adventure. When it comes to gym leaders, there are 8 to face off against in the Hoenn region, each one representing a different Pokémon type. Once you beat a gym leader and earn their gym badge, you gain access to new areas in the world and can progress in the story, which gives the game a pretty linear structure. After you earn all 8 gym badges, you’re then able to challenge the Elite Four and try your hand at becoming the region’s champion.

But wait, there’s more…

Alongside your quest to become the champion, there's plenty more to the story that you'll discover once you download Pokémon Emerald and try the game out for yourself. The nefarious folks from Team Aqua and Team Magma are going to cause you a lot of trouble, and you may even encounter a legendary Pokémon or two, so be prepared for anything!

The three starter Pokémon

Every mainline Pokemon starts by letting the player choose one of three starter Pokémon. In Pokémon Emerald, those starters are Treecko the Grass-type, Torchic the Fire-type, and Mudkip the Water-type. Whichever one you choose will accompany you throughout your entire journey and will even evolve over time as it reaches certain levels! Alongside the starters, there are over 100 other Pokémon in the game too that you'll be able to catch and add to your party if you so choose. With so much freedom of choice, it's no wonder Pokémon games are so popular!

10

Pokémon Emerald is a fantastic RPG that doesn’t disappoint. It builds upon Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire, offering lots more exciting features that weren’t present in the original Generation III games. Be sure to try this game out, especially if you’ve ever played any other RPGs like Yo-kai Watch and are looking for a similar kind of experience. You’re sure to love it!

Pros:

  • Huge world offering many hours of gameplay
  • Over 100 Pokémon to discover and catch, giving you so much choice when it comes to customizing your party
  • An engaging story with plenty of exciting moments and surprises

Cons:

  • Pokémon games are designed to be easy enough for children to play, so hardcore gamers may not find Pokémon Emerald super challenging
  • Leveling up Pokémon can be a bit grindy and tedious once you get past level 50 or so
