Any Saturday morning cartoon fan will probably know that Power Rangers: Time Force was a stable of overzealous children's television. The over-the-top sheet action and heroic plotlines set the scene for the series to be translated into a video game. Well, guess what? The Gameboy has been treated to that concept with a side-scrolling action game representing the show.

We've seen many Power Rangers games over the last decade - some good, some not so great. And here we are with another addition that feels like it simply had to be done. But the question remains, will Power Rangers: Time Force be an offering that excites series fans? On initial impressions, it doesn't look like it's going to rock the boat, but we better check anyway.

The Only Way is Time Force

If your first thought that Power Rangers: Time Force wasn't going to shake up the platform genre, you'd be right. Immediately upon starting the game, you can tell that the title is just the basics of side-scrolling platformer mechanics with a bit of uninspired combat and the series branding. So what's Power Rangers: Time Force all about?

You'll take control of one of the five Power Rangers with nothing different than their color. The narrative entails fighting through every pre-rendered level in another period, battling the same enemies no matter what part of history. Ultimately, your mission is to take down the antagonist Ransik as he seeks to conquer the earth.

The mechanics are simplistic as you'll go from one end to the other, mashing buttons and performing some basic kung-fu moves to neutralize your foes. It rinses and repeats until the end, when you'll finally facedown with the big boss and combine all your rangers might turn into a Megazord. Although that's one of the game's highlights, you feel that each of the seven levels is painfully dull.

Gameplay is the same throughout the first fifteen seconds of the game. Yes, it's catered to a younger audience, but there's a general feeling the game was rushed to align with the release of the TV series. Power Rangers: Time Force lacks polish, with bland visuals, little in the way of animations, and only offers minimal platforming mechanics.

Unpowered Rangers

Playing Power Rangers: Time Force is like watching paint dry; no if or buts about it. It's been a while since I've played such an uninspired copy-paste platformer that seems to offer no value to players. It's even hard to see young players having many positive things to say about the game, considering those basic combat moves become pretty stale after a little while.

Games like these set a precedent for movie/TV franchise games. "Let's make something quick and sell it for a premium because of the brand." It's an obnoxious practice in matches like Around the World in 80 Days. We wish it would stop, but it simply won't while people keep buying them.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Megazord boss battles are fun

Cons:

  • Pre-rendered levels don't offer much for game diversity
  • It's a straightforward walk until the end
  • Combat is extremely bland
