Today I am checking out Rambo for the NES. This was released in the late 80s and was a pretty big deal when it was released due to the popularity of the movie. While the game is just called “Rambo” it is actually based on the second movie. Perhaps the reason most people are familiar with this game is that it was featured on an episode of the Angry Video Game Nerd.

Save The Hostages

The “plot” of the movie does try and follow the events of the movie pretty well. The problem is this was made in Japan and the translation is not exactly great. So while you do get a bit of text explaining what your mission is. You really will not care what the characters are saying and just want to get to the killing…. And saving people of course.

Visually, I do not think that this is a bad looking game. It is a rather early NES title and an early licensed NES title at that. I do feel that they capture the look of the movie as well as they could. One thing I do like is the music, I found that this game has really fitting music.

The Legend of Rambo

Did you know that you are not allowed to review Rambo on the NES without mentioning that the gameplay is similar to Zelda II? Ok, all jokes aside that really is the best comparison for this game. For the most part, it plays like a side-scrolling platformer, but it does have RPG elements. You have a meter that you will fill as you progress, beat bosses, and so on. It is a nice little bit of progression.

Most of the time you fight spiders and animals, but eventually, bad guys will come and that is when things get really challenging. You start off very underpowered and these early levels, especially when you are relying on your knife are more of a challenge of endurance than anything else.

You have a map, but if you can make sense of it you are better than me. The gameplay is not horrible by any means, but it certainly throughs more than its fair share of annoying stuff your way.

I know that the review the Angry Video Game Nerd did about this game really lambasted it. I though feel that Rambo is not a horrible game, it is just not a really good one. There are far worse licensed games on the NES if you ask me. I would say it is worth checking out, especially if you have seen the review from the AVGN so you can see for yourself if it is as bad as he says. One thing I will say is that if you want an old school Rambo game, you are far better going for the Sega Master System game which is actually pretty damn awesome.

Pros:

  • The game tries to follow the plot of the movie
  • It has RPG elements which is quite surprising
  • Killing enemies is kind of fun
  • The game is pretty long
  • There is a weird, but awesome thing at the end with frogs!

Cons:

  • The map is freaking horrible
  • Your knife absolutely sucks!
