If you're bored with all those strategy-style football games, get ready to rattle some heads and kick some butt. Super High Impact Football for the SNES has entered the playing field, and it's loaded with high-impact action, starting with the opening kickoff and ending at the final whistle.

ProTips:

  • The best offensive pass play is called "Flood." If you get blitzed, pass as soon as the ball is hiked. If you have more time, wait about three seconds, pass the ball, and run for the end zone.
  • If the opposing team loves to blitz and you need more time, call a play like "Double Blast," which keeps at least one running back in the backfield to pick up blitzers.

It's Up! It's Good!

Super High Impact Football is a one- or two-player game that's a significant improvement over last year's Genesis version. On the SNES, the game offers better graphics, hotter digitized sounds, and, best of all, harder-hitting fun. You play as one of 18 fictitious international teams, ranging from Oakland to Europe. On both offense and defense, you choose from an extensive and imaginative playbook that offers 28 plays. You can also pick the player you control, which means on defense you might cover a wide receiver on one play and blitz the QB on the next. Players respond quickly to the controls, too, and you can even weave through traffic.

While the main object of the game is to score points and win, you can also put some awesome hits on the opposing team's players. Pads litter the field after a brutal collision. Just be careful, though, because tempers will fly, fights will erupt, and winning a fight for the sake of pride may become just as important as winning the game.

To score a Wicked Hit, press R or L to activate Turbo Speed. This enables you to hit a player with greater velocity.

Quality Ball

The graphics in Super High Impact are smooth, sharp, and detailed. The 3/4 -overhead perspective delivers a panoramic side view of the action. Player and ball movement, as well as scrolling, are smooth. Colors are sharp, and player detail is very good. You can even see a player holding his knee after he's been nailed, and watch helmets fly after an awesome hit.

The distinct digitized sounds help to add aggressive character to the game. You'll hear crowd noise, the thud of impact, and players taunting you with shouts of "Mama's boy!" The music features upbeat tunes that'll psyche you up for the game.

The defensive play called "Yer Toast" is a good all-around defensive weapon. It's particularly effective if you use your nose tackle to blitz.

Touchdown!

Super High Impact Football is one of the rowdiest football games out there. It's a must for all football fans, although experts will quickly blast through the Ultimate Level. This high-scoring game offers strategy, action, and fun. Most of all, though, it delivers Super High Impact!

Game Reviews

Super High Impact took token- flippers out to the foot brawl game, and now it's rarin' to tackle the Genesis! Reprogrammed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Flying Edge, this game's just as rowdy, rambunctious, fun, and frustrating as Midway's arcade counterpart. You'll love to hate this gridiron game!

Prior to game time, you set up the field for one or two players versus the computer or you and a friend go helmet-to-helmet. You also pick from 18 teams with big- league names but fake players.

The CPU-controlled adversary's skill level is adjustable. The only gaping hole in Super High's configuration line is a lack of season and play-off action.

Heavy Hitters

NFL officials would cringe at Super High Impact's violent rules. The game's a brutal spectacle for the eyes, ears, and bloody noses. The game really gets in your eardrums with buzzed music and players who mouth off before, during, and after downs. The crudities range from semi-violent threats ("Yer toast!") to low cuts at the opponent's personal fortitude ("You mama's boy!").

Coaches bark commands, refs call the TDs, and the Hit-O-Meter rates the severity of heavy-duty tackles.

If Super High Impact sounds righteous, check out the glorious graphics! The small but awesomely-animated players celebrate and do the video shuffle after touchdowns and decapitating hits. Some of the heavier impacts are rewarded with lost helmets and uniforms! The close-up zooms of the players and coaches are sweet.

Helter Skelter

While Super High is a visual and audio marvel, the game's chaotic, side-view game play is good news and bad for football followers. The 16 offensive and defensive formations are good, but execution is sometime problematic. The action itself is so fast and infuriating that you'll likely be left in the dust.

Offense is as much a question of survival as scoring. Once the play begins, the defenders invariably bust the line of scrimmage using the outrageous Turbo blast. Runners and QBs don't stand a chance in the backfield, so the most effective plays are quick midrange passes. However, the simplistic control makes aiming passes and directing their distances impossible.

ProTip: On an extra point or field goal, tap Button C repeatedly for your best chance at a block.

On defense, stopping the run's no problem, but disrupting pass plays is a crap shoot. Even using Turbo, you usually nail the receiver after he catches the ball. Although you can speed up, spin, dive, tackle, and switch players smoothly, one glaring flaw is your inability to choose a line player prior to the snap.

Despite lively, thrilling action, Super High is too imbalanced on the offensive side of the ball. The game's most enjoyable in player vs. player mode, because the insanity factor works both ways. In single-player mode, the computer usually scores at will, but so can you with a few tricks up your jersey sleeve.

Select Zone Buster and throw to the lower receiver for an easy completion that rarely fails.

It's Gotta Be the Cleats

Super High Impact is worth the price of admission just to see the trampled wide receivers and hear the unsavory comments spouted by the linemen. Flags on this game include out-of-control action and the lack of play-offs, but two players are certain to get their dollars' worth busting a few guts. Super High Impact breaks the testosterone barrier!

A Punishing, pompous, pigskin panic!

Ah, football! Can you ever get enough? Well, if you're like most sports fans, the answer is "no way!" The guys at Arena have really put together a great football cart. It has all the suspense, action and (let's face it) violence you need to sustain a good football game.

There are lots of plays to choose from, so you will never feel trapped into the same old pattern. As for control, you really have it all - that is, if you understand the play you just called! The graphics are incredible with really fine detailing, which is what you need to see the pain and anguish your players are feeling on the field.

Speaking of punishment, you will not believe the damage you can inflict on your opponent! You can explode the pads right off your foe with a really solid hit. If you are not sure about the strength of your hit, do not worry. The guy in the booth will let you know on the Hit-O-Meter. If things get really out of hand (as if they are not already) then you may have no other choice than to fight your opponent, team against team. That usually softens them up for the second half!

Super Hi Impact Football is a great translation from the arcade and has all the intensity of the Super Bowl! If you are tired of the same old "sportsmanship," check this one out!

By using the Bomb, the computer will not take an aggressive defense. Choose a Power Bomb and the ball will travel a great distance! In this play, your quarterback will drop back about 10 yards, and hurl the ball. It will end up in the hands of the receiver for any easy touchdown!

Tired of playing 'sportsmanlike' football? Don't take it out on the field, take it out on your T.V. with Acclaim's Super High Impact. Get ready to knock the pads off your opponent. Select from many plays; with great control, you can't go wrong. The Hit-O-Meter will display the amount of gusto behind each hit. Or, if you are feeling particularly nasty, duke it out on the field. No more Mr. Nice Guy! Hit 'em hard!

People say:

5.0

Although Super High Impact has the gloss down cold, the execution of play as well as the overall challenge do manage to detract from a visually appealing experience. Unfortunately, with thin game play and a real need for play book diversity, Super High Impact stumbles on its way to the end zone.

6.0

While not very entertained by the arcade version, Super High Impact on the Super NES is not a bad game. While it's true that it's very simple to play, it's better than reading the manual for five hours before you can choose a play. I would have liked a bit more action but overall it's an above average sports game.

5.0

This cart has lost quite a bit from the arcade translation. The graphics are good, and the audio is decent among sports games. The game play is very simple, and the computer offers little challenge. Go for the long bomb and you'll get touchdowns almost every time. This cart just doesn't get too exciting.

6.0

Super High Impact Football is a very loose conversion of the older coin-op. In fact, it is very simple to play the whole game by going ballistic on the controller! The offense needed better plays and the defense just needs help. I would have liked the game to be more structured and designed better.
