Winning the World Series has its benefits. In addition to the parade down Main Street, the hefty salary bonuses and the obligatory call from the President, some players and managers are lucky enough to get product endorsements. Of course, the Dodgers didn't win the Pennant last year, but lucky Tommy Lasorda got his name on baseball game anyway.

Who got the better end of this deal is open for discussion, but Tommy Lasorda Baseball is definitely a winner! This is the first 16-bit baseball game on the market, and if it's any indication of what's to come, video sports fans have a lot to look forward to!

The players and the playing field look great! An announcer calls "Ball", "Strike", "Safe", "Out" and "Foul" and broadcasts the position the fielder closest to a hit ball. Every call is crystal clear.

Welcome to the Bigs

Play alone or with a friend. Choose any of the 26 major league teams. Tommy Lasorda Baseball uses all the real-life city names, but the stats and the player names are specific to this game. There's no Kevin Mitchell or Wade Boggs but you may recognize players from Reggie Jackson Baseball game.

ProTip: Pay close attention to team stats and ratings before you play a full season. Learn witch teams are the strongest. For example, the Oakland A's are stacked with sluggers. The San Francisco Giants are well-balanced with good hitting and steady pitching. 0f course, you can play your favorites, but check out all the teams it you want to win the Pennant.

Lasorda Baseball has a password mode so you can play a season in any one of the four divisions. With some success, you can make the league championships -- even the World Series.

Hey Batter!

Batters in Lasorda Baseball are rated according to batting average, homeruns, running speed, fielding and throwing ability. Pitchers are rated by ERA (earned run average), curve-throwing ability, stamina, top throwing speed and the distance a hit pitch will travel. All the ratings make this game a challenge to your managerial ability as well as your gaming skill.

Use sound pitching strategy. Mix up speed and location, especially when you play the computer. Keep using the same pitch in the same location and you'll get tagged.

Game Reviews

Theme: Sports Difficulty: Average Number of Players: 1 or 2 Available: 1990

Tommy Lasorda Baseball appears to be the first of many sports-oriented games available for the Sega Genesis. It also appears to be the first to use a celebrity endorsement (their upcoming Golf game will be honored with Arnold Palmer's signature). Using a well-known coach as the byline for this title is only slightly misleading, since most of the real play revolves around hitting, fielding, and running, as opposed to real managerial duties.

Regardless, Tommy Lasorda Baseball faithfully duplicates almost every aspect of the real game, from the selection on pinch-hitters and relief ers, to the after game statistics that track your club.

Besides' the very solid batting confrontation, Tommy Lasorda Baseball has a unique feature that tracks all 26 teams in the league simultaneously! While you're playing, all the others are playing games as well! A helpful passcode feature tracks your progress during the season!

TL Baseball is without a doubt, the best looking video baseball I've ever played! The graphics are excellent, the sound effects first-class, and the whole game very enjoyable to play. The season play and password features are welcome and help add life to a game that is nearly perfect!

With the new capabilities of the 16-Bit machines, baseball has come one step closer to reality. TLB is the best on the market. Players have strengths and weaknesses and the player/batter screen is the best around. The new standard in video baseball!

7

The graphics in TL Baseball are 16-Bit quality and really bring this sports game to life. The game itself is good, with most of the features found in real Baseball. The way it tracks the league is cool, but other than that TL Baseball is about the same as the others - but with 16-Bit looks.

This is your standard baseball, with all the normal windows, batting and fielding modes intact. The game looks incredible thanks to the Genesis' 16-Bitgraphics. Probably the best baseball on the market.

The first baseball simulator in 16-bit! Lots of different players, real-time stats, and other neat and interesting features highlight this incredible baseball game!

  • Type: Sports
  • Release: 10/15/1989
  • Difficulty: Easy

The first of what appears to be many sports-oriented games for the Sega Genesis, Tommy Lasorda Baseball not only injects powerful 16-Bit graphics and sounds, but also increases the number of available options and modes open to the player.

You can control the on-screen fielders, as in most games, but in TL Baseball you can also play a full season, against other teams that are competing against you. Other options are also included and help expand the scope of this cartridge.

This was the first 16-bit baseball game on the market, and it set a high standard for 16-bit sports fans right off the bat.

Take the field as any one of 26 major league teams. Although the game uses real-life city names, the players and stats are specific to this game. If you're in it for the long haul, you can use the password mode to tack your team all the way to the World Series.

Players in the game have stats that indicate their skill level. They're rated according to batting average, homeruns, running speed, and fielding and throwing ability. Pitchers are rated by ERA, curve-throwing ability, stamina, top throwing speed, and the distance a hit pitch will travel.

Use the option screen to decide how tough to make your computer opponent. You can also select whether or not there'll be fielding errors and determine how the wind affects hit balls. The game covers just about every detail, right down to umps who shout "safe" or "out." Batter up!
