Tell me if you've heard this before: 'The best fighters from around the world have gathered for an all-out slugfest to determine the greatest fighter of all time!" Sounds like the premise behind every fighting game ever made, right? So what sets World Heroes 2 apart from other fighters? Its size. Takara packed a whopping 24 megs into WH 2 -- and brought a superior arcade translation to the SNES for even more to enjoy.

ProTip: If you're caught in a defensive crouch, stay crouched and then jump backwards to make more room before going on the offensive.

The Attack Pack

WH 2 has already proved its worth in the arcades with its excellent graphics, smooth game play, and extensive fighting moves and characters. The SNES game brings home all that and more. It features all eight characters from its predecessor and eight new fighters from different time periods. You can also select the two bosses, Dio and Neo Ceeguse, for head-to-head action. Throw in a choice of each character's native scenario to play on, plus eight different Death Match settings, and you have a monster of a game that uses every one of its 24 megs.

The premise is simple, if not original: Play solo and defeat every other fighter in a best-of-three side-view match, and you become World Champion. Or grab a buddy and just bust heads on-screen. Each fighter's moves are easily executed, and they stay tightly in sync with the on-screen action. A detailed Options menu enables you to customize the fighter's power and speed, change the joypad's button configuration, and set time limits for each match.

  • Each hero has long- and short-range attacks. Long-range attacks take more time to execute and are less effective in close combat.
  • Don't be deceived by a "big" fighter's size. All the big fighters have a fast move that enables them to catch up to their speedier, smaller opponents.

Feels Like the First Time

WH 2 is so faithful to the arcade graphics that you have to look closely to see what (if anything) was lost in the conversion. The intensely detailed backgrounds are excellent, and the characters move just as fluidly as they did in the arcade game.

The digitized soundtrack is tack sharp. You even hear Janne's bizarre hyena giggle after she wins a match!

  • Jump over an opponent after they execute a special move so you can attack from their other side.

World Class

Although it's tough to dethrone the reigning champs, Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, World Heroes 2's quality and attributes place it in their league -- not with all the minor-league imitators out there. Arcade fans won't be disappointed, and newcomers will see what all the fuss is about.

Game Reviews

SNK's Neo-Geo always has some of the best fighting games around. One of the latest, World Heroes 2, is no exception. This 146-Meg cartridge is one of the best to date. It features fourteen characters, each loaded with special moves and techniques. After every fighter is defeated, another six fighters will appear. If you can defeat them, you will become the undisputed greatest warrior of all time. What an honor! World Heroes 2 is much better than the first. The animation is smoother, and players will have better control over their character. The graphics alone will make you quake in your boots. The playing areas are very cool, and have a lot of minute details that bring the fantasy world alive. Each fighter is creative, and has moves to fit their styles. For example, one of the characters, Mudman, can summon up spirits to confuse his foe. Along with the graphics, the sound is totally cool. The Neo-Geo shows just how good it is with this game. World Heroes 2 may just shape up to be one of the best fighting games.

It seems that World Heroes was just dying for a sequel, and here it is! This time there are new characters in addition to the original cast and crew. Each character has new moves to master and many more surprises to watch out for. With even more bonus games and increased difficulty, World Heroes II is a worthy sequel.

Not your average, run-of-the-mill fighting game! This cart could give MK II and SSFII a run for their money. This is definitely an addictive game!

Prepare yourself for a massive battle. Pick from 16 fighters and square off against each one in a test of skills. Only the greatest warrior will survive.

Based on the Neo-Geo game of the same name, this translation is a near exact replica. Hard to believe, but it's true. Only a few details are missing. The game plays well, and each character has plenty of moves. All 16 (Bosses included) warriors have their own techniques.

For experienced fighters, there's the infamous Death Match Mode with traps like saws and spikes to put a big damper on your day. This is one of the best arcade-to-home translations ever.

More than just an upgrade, W.H. 2 Jet by SNK is a whole new ball game. For starters, there are awesome new cinemas, cool bonus rounds, and tons of new ways to play. But that's only the beginning - there are two new guys as well as a slew of new moves for each character. Look out SF 2!

The fighting thrills of World Heroes continues with this spectacular 146-Meg sequel. In addition to the eight original characters, six new fighters erupt onto the scene. It will be a battle to the end to see who will be the world warrior. Like before, compete in death matches that are riddled with special hazards, like spikes and blades. If that's not enough, after you defeat all fourteen characters, you must go on to the fearsome bosses. Only the most skilled warrior can possibly win. If you survive, consider yourself a world hero! Below are samples of some of the many moves for each character. To save space, the original characters are not detailed here.

World Heroes 2 is a fighting game and the second in the four part series. It was released less than a year after the first game, and it brings with it improved graphics, new characters, and others.

The story doesn’t change much from its predecessor. The same professor, Dr. Brown, decides that the results of his previous tournament were inconclusive, as he was not able to discover the greatest fighter of all time. As such, he once again brings back fighters from across time, the same eight featured in the first game along with six new ones, bringing the total to 14 different characters.

Although it was released relatively soon, World Heroes 2 has somewhat improved its graphics. The animations are more smoothly and the characters are more detailed than before. Each fighting arena is different and even has some moving elements, like thugs in the background of the USA arena. Naturally, each character has their own sound and voice effects, but although they do add to the diversity of the game, they don’t really stand out either.

Gameplay wise, there haven’t been many changes, other than tweaks to the old characters’ moves. It still consists of basic moves performed by single buttons and more powerful moves performed by button sequences, but also special moves (like grabbing your opponent) which can be performed in certain situations. Truth be told, there wasn’t much that could have been done to improve the gameplay, and it already fit with the trends of the genre at the time.

Like its predecessor, this game features normal mode and death match, but has brought some changes to the design. In normal mode, you fight all six new characters (possibly including your double) and then move on to fighting four of the eight original. Death match takes a tug of war approach in addition to the deadly traps laid on the arena floor. Both opponents share a life bar which has a pointer at the middle. When receiving hits, the arrow moves closer to your side until it reaches the edge, at which point you lose. This means that fights can last much longer than usual, although the timer still exists.

World Heroes 2 brings about new characters and a more interesting death match mode, but nothing notable or ground breaking. Still, it is better than the previous game of the series and should be tried by fans of the genre.

World Heroes 2 features:

  • 14 different playable characters inspired from actual historical figures
  • Two game modes: normal mode and death match, both with bonus rounds in-between
  • Up to two players for fun brawling action
