The town of Redmount has fallen on evil times. With leaders named Duey, Chester, Edgar, and Pierre running the show, it's no wonder. They sound like a schoolyard bully's hit list. Enter homeboy Dogi and his pal, Adol -- who just happens to be the baddest swordfighter in the land of Ys.

At Ys

TurboGrafx-CD players already know Wanderers from Ys as Ys Book III. This SNES game mirrors that TG-CD adventure.

Ys dishes out a satisfying mix of roleplay gamING (RPG) and action/adventure. As Adol you quickly ditch Dogi at an inn and take off for action. You build up character traits, interrogate townsfolk, slash for gold, and buy important items just as in any RPG. Like many action/adventure games, you fight a horde of murderous beasts and solve maze-like obstacles.

The six-level Ys environment is rich and unpredictable. Along the way you track down Swords, Armor, Shields, Magic Rings, and other magic items, which are essential to your fight.

ProTips:

  • The Power Ring's to the left at the bottom of the pit in Tigray Mine.
  • There is natural Herb in the "shade of the rocks" in Lava Zone Nine of the Livern Ruins. Use it right there and you can grab some more.

Ys-y on the Eyes and Ears

The graphics are sharp and feature bright, Japanese-style characters and some nice SNES cinema. They really shine when you face the bosses. The action's in side-view, multi-scrolling perspective and, like any RPG, you can move back and forth through any level.

The sounds are minimal, but the game spins its tunes with enthusiasm. Although MTV they aren't.

Ys not Heavy

Wanderers from Ys doesn't throw a whole lot of curves at you, but it dishes out thumb-pumpin' action. Most adversaries move in predictable, repetitious patterns across your path. Knocking off the bad guys simultaneously snares points toward Experience, Magic Ring Power, and Gold.

You must move cautiously and with precision to find the right spots to hack without being hacked. When you meet mid-level and stage bosses, however, the fighting's fast and furious! No time for thinking ahead -- until you're dead!

To do in the Tigray Boss, use the Amulet (which you buy in Redmount). The Long Sword, Chain Mail, and Health 80 or better helps a lot. Crouch beneath the blade blasts and charge in with the Down Thrust (Press Down, B, and Y).

The game-play is slick. You get four sword fighting techniques. The easy-to-use Equipment and Inventory Screens make juggling weapons, magic, and other useful gear a breeze.

Traveling back to the entrance of a level recharges Health.

The Save Game feature -- with 15 save positions -- and unlimited continues saves your sanity. Work out strategies, try them, and learn from your mistakes without starting from scratch.

"Ys" not "Ease"

Wanderers from Ys is as close to a 16-bit "standard" as any SNES game is likely to get. You get a good-looking RPG, a massive video-game environment, and energetic hack-n-slashing. If you earned Ys battlescars on the TurboGrafx-CD, this game holds no surprises, but it's much harder! Wander into Ys with the Wanderers from Ys.

Game Reviews

Only Ys III could possibly compare to the original Ys Book I and II adventures. This title is becoming so popular it is being formatted for many of the existing game systems! Ys III on CD is the true game, containing all of the incredible soundtracks, cinema displays, and traditional voices of the Ys genre with a unique action perspective.

Three years have passed since Adol defeated the evil lurking in the land of Ys. Adol's companion, Dogi learns news of darkness spreading through his homeland, so Adol accompanies him to investigate. When they arrive they are greeted with dying crops, creatures who hunt humans, and despair so power-ful, even Adol must shudder. So, with 5 sword in hand, w Adol must once again resume the mantle of "champion of justice" to rid the fair lands of Felugana of the evil leeching its life force away.

With graphics and music only compact discs can deliver, Ys III is a perfect blend of upbeat tunes, radical graphics, and smooth gameplay. Discover all new lands, as well as all new powerups to help Adol conquer the evil forces that lie within. You can't let them destroy the land of Ys!! Available in October.

The popular Ys saga continues in this game role play adventure for the TurboGrafx-16. Although Ys III captures the look and feel of Ys: Book I and II, it doesn't match up 100 percent to the standard set by that classic.

Get Along Little Dogi

In this adventure the boy-hero Adol journeys to the land of Kenai with his, friend Dogi. In six stages of side 1 scrolling action (no overhead sequences as in the previous versions) Adol searches for the magic items and weapons that will enable him to defeat the evil forces that enslave Kenai.

Kenai is a land of many landscapes, including peaceful townships, rugged mountain ranges, and dark, forbidding mines. In each of the six stages of the game Adol encounters evil creatures bent on his destruction. This boy-hero lives and dies by his power meter which drops when monsters nail him. In standard role-play stuff Adol defeats baddies and builds up his strength and experience to advance to new levels of power.

Ys On Down the Road

Fortunately for Adol, he gets to do more than live and die by the sword. Friends he meets during his quest give him special items and information that enable him to continue his quest. Using gold he earns in battle Adol can also shop for weapons, healing herbs, and other powerful magic. Even the bad guys come in handy - Adol defeats each of the six bosses he earns a useful tool of the fighting trade.

Take the Ys'y Way Out

Musically Ys III meets the standard set by the mammoth Ys I and II CD Disk, incorporating cool tunes and speaking characters into the storyline. However, the game's graphics and storyline just aren't on a par with the original. The adventure itself is shorter and not nearly as challenging as the classic. Fanatic Ys fans will suffer some disappointment, but they should enjoy this adventure anyway - and then start looking forward to the next quest in the series!

ProTips:

  • Grab this Healing Herb before you fight the lava monster in Al-caino and then grab one more to cany into battle.
  • After you've defeated the lava boss head back to the lava lake and use the Stone Idol to freeze the lava so that you can cross the lake safely.
  • To defeat the Dragon Boss stand to the left of this ledge, dodge his shots, and then jump to the b'p of the ledge and slash him. Repeat this till he's done for.
  • To beat the second boss stand to the left of the screen, jump over or crawl under the disks he hurts, jump up and hack him with your sword, and then run back to the left of the screen to dodge his lightning blast. Repeat until he's done for.
  • Give Grandma Ada Roy a Pendant in Sarina and she'll give you the Shield Ring.
  • Equip yourself with your weapons of choice before you do battle with a boss. You can't equip during the fight.
  • Your rings lose power when you use them. Don't forget to un-equip them when you don't need them.

Y's 3 continues the adventures of Adol, the legendary hero of Y's. Adol must once again rescue the people from turmoil. Armed with his sword, and all new magic, Adol is well prepared, but is it enough? This time the action takes place from a side scrolling perspective instead of the 3/4 top view as in the first disc. Animated cinema dis-plays, and multiple scrolling back-grounds are also used.

While there's no denying the fact that CD games with long intermissions, music and sound are attractive, they need to be supported by good game play. Y's 3 is way too linear, with little quest left in the adventure. The action has been honed a bit, but it still is way too easy.

8

The magical power that is Y's has just returned! Even though this carries the name of one awesome RPG, it's just way to easy! Fortunately, the voices and plot make up for more than what is lost. It's a great sequel that all fans of the original should check out!

I think that this disc misses the high marks of the original. The music is phenomenal and really jams on a good stereo system. The game play, however, is extremely limited. There is little or no challenge here and the whole quest is too straightforward for an adventure game.

8

Finally! A title that betters its predecessors! The game play is much more challenging this time in the land of Ys! Now you swing your sword! About time! I hate Hydlide attack methods to the max! The quest is pretty cool, but the music will blow you away!

The third quest in the Y's series of games has now gone to all formats. While the graphics have been cut back from the other versions, the excellent game play has not been compromised. The cinema displays remain intact but the voices have been replaced with text. Still it's a challenging quest for those not owning the other game systems.

The follow up of Y's book 1&2. A new adventure take you to the deepest parts of the castles and forests in search of the most evil man that rules the land. Keep your power high as there are monsters everywhere!

Evil Still Lurks...

The land of Ys has been peaceful for a year since Adol's brave quest to defeat the evil entities Dark Fact and Darm. Now, while traveling the world in search of adventure, Adol land his friend Dogi learn of a new legion of evil rising in Ys. This time, Adol must face all new challenges and dangers! Wander the lands and gather clues to the powerful creatures seeking to control the population. Prepare to join the largest and most intense quest of the Ys series!

American Sammy is bringing this popular RPG to the Super NES. The graphics are a definite improvement over all other versions. The quest is still intact and the music is great too.

The spectacular PC Engine/Super Famicom adventure/quest game is being converted to the Famicom. While lacking the great soundtrack and voice, the graphics have not been severely compromised and the game plays as well as the original. With long sinuous mazes, tons of new enemies to defeat and end bosses that will challenge the best of players, Y's 3 takes adventure games to new heights!

Almost three years have passed since Adol had rescued Y's from the clutches of evil. Adol with his faithful companion Dogi were wandering from country to country. One day, a rumor lead them to return to Dogi's place of birth. Something strange had happened in Felugana, fields were dying and becoming barren. Strange creatures hunted the people in the dark cloak of night. This did not discourage Adol and he plunged into his new journey. The sequel to one of the best P.C. Engine games ever, is now available in Japan! Wanderers from Y's features a fantastic new musical score and cinema intermissions that are even more spectacular than Y's Books 1 & 2! This time the game is played in a fast and furious side-scrolling battlefield. Tons of items and hours of exciting game play could make this the best CD available yet.

Ys III: Wanderers is an action role-playing game developed by Nihon Falcom Corporation. It is the third game in the Ys series of video games.

The game is side scrolling instead of the previous games top-down view. Adol also now has the ability to jump. Not new to the series is the use of magical rings which give Adol different powering up abilities such as healing and shielding. The game also uses various key items found along the way to solve minor puzzles and progress the story.
