Avengers alert! Fans of the smas arcade hit, Captain America and the Avengers, should dive instantly into Data East's Genesis version. Although scaled down, the home version features the same characters, hot action, cool graphics, and fast game play as its arcade big brother. If you like comics and you love action gaming, this game's for you!

Avengers Assemble!

Captain America's archvillain, the Red Skull, has gotten his hands on a powerful device that enables him to exert total mind-control over all other supervillains. As Villain Supreme, the Red Skull is on a one-way express to world domination. Only Captain America and his fellow Avengers (Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Vision) stand a chance of derailing the Red Skull's sinister plans. In the superhero biz, the fate of the world is always at stake!

Each hero has specific superpowers that you can command. Captain America throws a self-returning indestructible shield. Both Vision and Iron Man fly and shoot lasers. Hawkeye is always on target with his souped-up arrows. Every hero also starts with 100 life units. Lose all your life units, and you can restart as any one of the other heroes until you run out of continues. Regular robot sentries do you little damage, but Bosses can sap it away in seconds. Fortunately, Quicksilver (a fellow Avenger) randomly drops by with extra life units, and the Wasp, another compatriot, appears and adds to your firepower during critical moments.

ProTips:

  • Since only Iron Man and Vision can fly, launch aerial attacks by continuously jumping into the air to avoid being hit.
  • The only way to attack robots carrying shields is to hit them from behind.

Go solo or team up with a friend to take on all five side-scrolling, action-packed levels of this game. Each level features hordes of evil robots and henchmen, plus famous comic book supervillain bosses, such as Ultron, the Living Laser, Klaw, Mandarin, and Juggernaut. Comic books fans will be thrilled that both villains and heroes look, fight, and have the exact same superpowers as they do in the comics. Plus, unlike most action games, this game offers not one but several bosses for each level! Who says we're in a recession?

  • Klaw and Living Laser tend to move in tandem. Jump over them when they attack and hit them from behind.
  • Hit the Jump and Attack buttons repeatedly to shake out of a villain's grasp.

All Roads Lead to Mecha (Red Skull)

The five levels of this game transport you throughout a myriad of locales. Start off entrenched within the city streets, where you hurl bricks and garbage cans as weapons. Next, reel in underwater combat as you chase the Red Skull through the depths of the ocean. There, blast off into outer space for an interstellar dogfight leading to an attack on the Red Skull's orbitting space headquarters. However, defeating the Red Skull is only half the victory. Finally, you must face Mecha Red Skull, a cyborg monstrosity built by the Red Skull to ensure revenge if he were ever defeated.

Concentrate firepower on the Sentinel's head -- his only weak spot.

Captain America and the Avengers is really several games in one. Standard side-scrolling hand-to-hand combat is par for the city streets and within the Red Skull's hideout. The game converts into a shooter as the heroes fly through the underwater and outer space levels, dodging and blasting enemies as effectively as any spaceship.

Since you can't shoot backwards, stay in the middle of the screen in order to dodge projectiles from either direction.

Make Mine Marvel!

Captain America and the Avengers is a comic book adventure come to life. It's evident that great care was taken to ensure that all characters are true to their comic book origins. The bright, colorful, detailed graphics capture the excitement and energy of their four-color printed adventures. The digitized heroic speech, sound effects, and soundtrack effectively mimic the macho dialogue, explosions, and tone of the comics.

Game Reviews

Everyone's favorite comic book hero is now a video game. Captain America is here and he is better than ever! You control Captain America on a mission to stop The Mandarin and his reign of terror. With many offensive weapons to use, such as your shield and your punches you bravely take on the enemy. A very nice feature is the ability to have a two-player simultaneous battle with a friend! Captain America should make it to the stores this Spring.

Comic book cartridges are becoming a popular video game trend. Data East is fueling the theme with Captain America and The Avengers.

Battle the forces of Red Skull through tough stages of superhero combat. One or two players can choose from their favorite characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye and Vision. Together, they will face relentless hordes of the evil Red Skull's trained assassins!

The action scenes take place in the vacuum of space, serine parks and busy cities. It's up to you to defend the planet from becoming Red Skull's next playland.

Comic books like Spider-Man and Captain America can make exciting video games if they have adequate game play. Sadly, Captain America is a forgettable scroller.

You can choose from one of four superheroes: Iron Man, Vision, Hawkeye and Captain America. The characters are similar, but each has different firing and jumping abilities. The control is comparable to other shooters.

Unfortunately, the game is nondescript. The animation and sound are mediocre and don't push the hardware. As far as game play, you're gonna get plastered, so just dive into the action, and bully your way through the enemies.

Overall, Captain America is not very innovative or exciting. This superhero isn't even a super-near-o.

ProTips:

  • Keep some distance between you and your foe.
  • When you reach the right side of the screen, back up and analyze your enemy's firing patterns.

Bash! Krak! Ooof! What happened here? The Genesis version, which is almost identical (content-wise), runs circles around this one! The control is bad, making it almost impossible to defeat some enemies.

The Red Skull is trying to take over the entire planet. He has developed a mind control device that will place people under his control. It is up to Captain America and the Avengers to stop him. You can choose from four different characters: Captain America, Ironman, Vision and Hawkeye. The levels are side-scrolling with a couple of shooter levels in between. There is no difference between the characters except the way they look. You can punch, kick or throw your shield, arrows, etc. The levels move smoothly and make for an extremely intense game. Remember, if you don't beat the Red Skull, all humanity is doomed to become mindless zombies.

Based on the popular comic series, you can guide Captain America or Hawkeye while they try to save Iron Man and Vision from The Red Skull and The Mandarian.

Trouble in the land of Superheroes. Working incognito and calling himself "The Mandarin," Red Skull (one of the ultimate Superhero foes) has hatched a plan to take over America. Iron Man and Vision have already fallen victim to Mandarin's efforts; it's now up to Captain America and Hawkeye to liberate their super-buddies and thwart Mandarin's plans. Captain America, brandishing his mighty shield, and Hawkeye with his trusty arrows face mote than 20 levels of grueling battle scenes in this Superhero-soiree'. What's more there's an abundance of hidden levels to explore, and, depending which path you choose, there are also multiple ways in which to solve the game. Have you got what it takes to be a superhero?

Blam! Krak! Boom! Captain America and the Avengers take on the forces of the vile Red Skull. Every comic fan will want to love this game, which could be as much of a challenge as battling the Skull.

This so-so side-view action game stars four famous Marvel comics' heroes. The bad guys are equally well-known in the comic world, especially Mandarin and the Red Skull. The character graphics in this game look awesome!

The fighting action suffers from slippery animation and the controls make your heroes' muscles seem mushy.

The Marvel comics fire up your imagination. Read them. You'll need all the imagination you can muster to help Cap out of this jam.

Just like a good comic book series, some superhero video games never die. For SNES owners who haven't had a chance to play Captain America and the Avengers on the Genesis, the costumed crusader and his band of buffed buds are SNES bound in a one- or two-player game.

In this action/adventure game, you can play as either Captain America, Iron Man, Vision or Hawkeye. Each superhero has his own unique powers, like Vision's ability to fire Solar Lasers, Captain America's Shield-Throwing expertise, Hawk-eye's precision Arrow Shooting, and Iron Man's High-Tech Blasters.

Your common goal is to defeat Captain America's archenemies, the Red Skull and his team of villains. They have a nefarious plan of world domination, and you're the Earth's last hope. You'll play through the city streets, an underwater hideaway, and more! The end of each level is also guarded by one of Red Skull's screen-filling henchmen, whom your Avenger must battle to move on.

In this side-scrolling game, all of the graphics are done in true comic book fashion, with colorful sprites and well-drawn larger-than-life characters. Fire up this game and you'll probably hang on to it until the end, just like your old comic book collection.

Make way for Captain America and the Avengers! This Data East game actually just features Cap (celebrating his 50th anniversary this year) and a few of his Avengers buddies, but they've got some serious superheroin' to do!

Avengers (Un) Assemble!

The title and the box art are slightly deceiving since it depicts Cap alongside Iron Man, Hawkeye, and the Vision. Actually Iron Man and the Vision have been captured by the evil Red Skull, so it's up to Cap and Hawkeye to come to their rescue. This one-player game allows you to alternate between playing either Captain America with his indestructible shield, or Hawkeye, armed with his bow and explosive arrows. Each hero must be played individually, but you may alternate between them at any time.

ProTips:

  • Make sure there is plenty of "air" around Hawkeye, since he can only fire one arrow at a time until it hits an enemy or flies off the screen.
  • Both Cap and Hawkeye can kick, punch and jump while their weapons are in the air.

This game also features an interactive Battle Mode that enables up to two gamers to play Cap and/or Hawkeye versus four of the main supervillian Bosses in a simultaneous, no-frills slugfest. Of course, one of you can play the villains, too. Whoever wins three out of five rounds is crowned the champ! This mode is ideal for studying the strengths and weaknesses of all the characters before you play the actual game. It's unfortunate that regular game-play isn't also two-player interactive.

Hawkeye stands the best chance against flying enemies, because he can shoot vertically while Cap can only throw his shield horizontally.

Flingin' and Slingin'

Cap and Hawkeye must successfully travel through 20 U.S. cities overrun with super-powered villains, robots, and mutant creatures, that want to make your trip a one-way ticket. Before you face the powerful Bosses such as the Wizard, the Mandarin, Ultron, or Crossbones, you'll have to face equally powerful Mid-level Bosses such as Fire Man and Dynamite Napalm. A large Map Screen charts both heroes' status and their progress.

Fire Man is only vulnerable when his flames are out, and the only way to destroy Dynamite Napalm is to burst the oil drums in his hands just before he throws them at you.

Valuable power-ups and special items aid our heroes. Snag 100 Power Stones to make Cap's shield doubly lethal, and collect 200 Power Stones to make Hawk's arrows explode on impact. Floating Energy Pods replenish your life meters. Rescue Pods free you if you're captured. And most importantly -- Key Crystals open the Exit onto the next level.

Since there is no time limit, your first priority in the early levels is to take time to load up on Power Stones and 1-Ups in preparation for the subsequent levels.

Make Mine Marvel!

The best indicator of a potentially successful licensed product is that it remains true to its source. It's clobberin' time, Marvel Comics fans! All the heroes and supervillain bosses look like and have the same powers as their comic book counterparts. The action onscreen perfectly captures the spirit and fun of wham-bam-pow comic book fight scenes. Cap and Hawkeye can perform a variety of moves for any situation. Captain America and the Avengers is a solid, action-packed game sure to please gamers and comic book fans alike. Nuff said!

Based upon the long running Marvel comic book, The Avengers, this 1-4 player-simultaneous fighter is sure to please arcade fans and comic book aficionados alike. Captain America's arch nemesis, the Red Skull, has recruited Klaw, Whirlwind, the Grim Reaper, the Mandarin, Deathstalker, and those gigantic, robot mutant hunting Sentinels in a devious plan to take over the world. Cap leads Iron Man, the Vision, and Hawkeye against this evil super crew. Their battles take place on streets of New York, across the world, and even in outer space aboard an orbiting space platform.

Great care has been taken to ensure that each character looks, sounds, and fights with his comic book powers, Iron Man fires his repulsor rays, the Vision zaps enemies with laser eye beams, Hawk-eye unleashes a flurry of arrows, and Cap flings his shield. This game even plays like a comic book; detailed panels of comic art recount the storyline between levels. Classic sound effects such as "KWHAM," "KZAP" and "WHABOOM" flash in bright comic-bookish lettering. The villains speak in campy evil banter and the heroes reply with equally corny lines about truth, justice and the American arcade way! The graphics are gorgeous! All the characters are well-rendered, and the backgrounds feature infinite detail. A hot soundtrack and realistic digitized voices and sound effects help make this game a joy to play. There are sure to be long lines for this one, but that's OK since it's just as fun to watch as it is to play. As with their other 4-player arcade hit, The Simpsons, Data East is hitting jackpots with the comics!

Join forces with four of Marvel Comics' most famous superheroes -- Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Vision -- to battle such villains as the Mandarin and the Red Skull.

Captain America and the Avengers is a beat ‘em up side-scrolling game, featuring colourful comic book like graphics and familiar characters from the Captain America universe.

In this game you play as one of the four Avengers as you try to stop the evil Red Skull from fulfilling his evil plans. The story is told between stages through comic panels, as well as during the game through speech boxes; while it’s not anything special, it’s nice to have a story to follow instead of just punching out whoever you might come across.

The gameplay is rather simple, with the characters able to perform basic actions along with their special powers. Each of the four available characters (Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man and Vision) has different abilities; for example, Captain America can throw his shield and have it return to him, and Iron Man can shoot beams from his fists. Besides these, you can use the various weapons that you can find, even seemingly harmless items like cans. You can even throw defeated enemies right before they vanish from the screen!

Graphically speaking, Captain America and the Avengers does a great job in keeping the comic book atmosphere through its colourful and varied characters, as well as little touches such as the sounds of punches and kicks appearing overhead. The enemies are easily distinguishable and it’s nice when you can recognize a boss before the battle even begins. Although, as many have and will still point out, theJuggernaut is quite scrawny compared to his comic book counterpart. The sound isn’t spectacular, but hearing characters saying their catchphrases makes the gaming experience a little more immersive and enjoyable.

There can be a few annoyances during the game, particularly when ranged enemies appear. They tend to time themselves so that they shoot one after the other, so as soon as you get up from a hit, you get shot right back down. This means that they should be your number one target or you’ll end up getting frustrated. Some also believe that that the flying levels are harder to maneuver, but at least the change of pace is appreciated.

There isn’t anything specifically wrong or mind blowing about Captain America and the Avengers, but the bottom line is that it is a good game and fans of the series will not be disappointed.

Captain America and the Avengers features:

  • Play as four of the Avengers, each with their own special abilities.
  • Fight through hordes of Red Skull’s minions and ultimately fight villains.
  • Graphics inspired from the comic books.

The Red Skull is out to conquer the world once again, so it's up to Captain America and the Avengers to stop him and his army of thugs.

Captain America and The Avengers is based on the 1991 Data East arcade game. Players can choose between four characters: Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye or Vision as they punch, kick, or use special powers to dispose of various enemies. Along the way characters will be able to pick up trash cans or other objects to throw at the enemy. While the game is primarily a side-scrolling beat 'em up, there are also shooting stages that will find your character flying through the air or swimming under water. In addition, two players can play simultaneously on one of three difficulty levels.

The Red Skull believes he can take over the world with the help of super-villains Whirlwind, Living Laser, Klaw, Grim Reaper, and various other unsavory types. Trouble is, they happen to enjoy working alone. So after careful planning and research, Red Skull came up with an invention to bring all of the twisted criminals under one power: a mind-control device.

Now Captain America and The Avengers must not only unite to stop their arch-enemies from wreaking havoc upon the world, but somehow find Red Skull's secret device and put an end to his diabolical plans.

Captain America and the Avengers is the beat 'em up arcade game released by Data East and Mindscape, Inc in 1991 based on the Marvel Comics' series The Avengers.

Players can choose to play one of four superheroes - Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Vision - as they battle through New York City, the underwater world of Atlantis, and eventually into Red Skull's moon base, which has a giant laser cannon pointed at Earth. Gameplay is similar in format to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games. Each character can attack and jump, and also pick up and throw certain objects positioned in each level, i.e. bricks or barrels.

The boss characters in the game include Klaw, The Living Laser, Whirlwind, the Wizard, the Grim Reaper, the Juggernaut, Master Mold, the Mandarin, Controller, Ultron, Crossbones, and Red Skull. Other Avengers such as the Wasp, Quicksilver, Wonder Man and the Sub-Mariner make cameo appearances.

In this version the only playable characters are Captain America and Hawkeye; their mission is to save the Vision and Iron Man from the Mandarin. The game has a map with various locations, representing different levels and super villains that the player must battle through. Rather than a port, this was simply a different game with the same name.

THE GOOD

The graphics are great considering it is a Game Gear. The controls are very tight.

THE BAD

The enemies tend to get repetitive and the Boss patterns aren't all that different from each other.

THE UGLY

Watching Captain America's body slump to the ground when he dies. It's pretty heartbreaking!
