Game makers certainly deserve to be keelhauled for abandoning ship on 16-bit systems and leaving millions of gamers high and dry. Thanks to Playmates, however, Genesis owners just might worm their way out of their depression this year.

It's Him, Jim

Earthworm Jim 2 picks up where the last Jim left off. This time the bad bird space villain, PsyCrow, has put the snatch on Jim's girl, Princess What's-Her-Name, to marry her himself. Jim's out to make ol' Psy eat crow.

In many ways, the action/adventure gameplay, while varied, traipses through familiar territory...but they're such fun and funny places to be! The ten worlds offer assorted challenges that keep the action fresh and the challenge maxed.

The basic side-view action's a blast. Our earthworm hero runs and guns through strange extraterrestrial worlds. Jim finds an arsenal of high-tech weapons littering the landscape, including mega plasma blasters, homing missiles, and the three-finger triple-shot gun. His standard weapons, of course, are the familiar Machine Gun and the Worm Whip, where Jim's Powersuit uses him as a weapon. All the primo hardware is necessary to blow away a gang of bad beings that includes evil cats, extraterrestrial circus performers, and blunderbuss-wielding octopi.

As the Worm Turns

The control boys must've put in overtime on Jim 2 because Jimbo moves through a wide variety of gameplay scenarios with style, grace, and precision. For instance, in Lorensen's Soil, Jim carries the fight to a way-out underground level worthy of any worm's earth-moving endeavors. Using an electric sandblaster, Jim pulverizes dirt and rock to burrow to the surface as pincer-head termites, icky larvae, and other underground dwellers attack him.

ProTips:

  • During goo jumps, press the directionals toward your jump to extend your range.
  • In The Flying King, you can shake off the pigs by rapidly pressing Button C.
  • To beat PsyCrow in Puppy Love, keep your eye on the pup closest to the crowd and never miss the bomb.
  • In Lorensen's Soil, nailing the soil overhead with the blaster creates mounds that will give you better elevation when you jump.
  • In The Flyin' King, always bump the balloon bomb hard to push it forward as far as possible.

In floating levels like Inflated Head, Jim morphs into things like the Blind Cave Salamander and Inflatable Head Jim. Here you must compensate for weightlessness as you guide Jim through mazelike passageways.

There's even a shooter level called The Flyin' King. Using a 3/4-overhead view, you help Jim nudge a balloon bomb past such aggressive antiworm weapons as pig catapults and on to a nasty end boss.

  • Earthworm Jim was born on June 9,1994.
  • In The Flying King, use the machine gun to clear the green goo balls out of your path.
  • The bubble gun is useless. If you grab it, use it up and ditch it quickly.
  • In the very beginning of the game, there's a Jim 1-up to the left.

If your sense of humor leans toward the wicked, you'll enjoy the finger-whacking Puppy Love bonus rounds. As PsyCrow tosses helpless puppies out of a window, you have to keep them from going "splat" by running underneath them and bouncing them off a big marshmallow.

Earthy Graphics And Sound

Earthworm's visuals are killer from the ground up. The star of the graphical show is Jim himself, who keeps things goofy with wonderfully wacky faces. He looks loopy to begin with, but he also pulls assorted smirks, grimaces, and surprised looks throughout the game.

As in every Jim game there's also a ton of bizarre stuff such as falling grandmas, flying pigs, and end-level cows. The animation's on overdrive, so sometimes you feel like you're playing an interactive cartoon.

Worms don't have ears, but yours are in for a treat. The music rolls from rock to classical. You even hear Scottish and Spanish influences in the tunes. The effects are exquisite with a cacophony of yells, screams, whoas, and primo weapon blasts.

  • When you see goo overhead, it usually means snott swinging (press Button C twice) will lead you to a goo-die.
  • Grandmas always fall in a predictable pattern.
  • In Lorensen's Soil, your sandblaster can grab the timers, too.
  • Try retracing your steps sometimes. You might find new power-ups in spaces that were previously empty.

The Conqueror Worm

If you want a good workout, sign on with Jim. It worms your heart to find a 16-bit game this good.

Game Reviews

Jim trudges through an accountant's nightmare! This is what life is like, kids.

Way cool! Jim's finally made it onto a next-generation platform! For those of you who were cursing yourselves for not getting Earthworm Jim 2 on a 16-bit system, have no fear; the world's most violent worm is almost ready to take his bow on the Saturn.

Earthworm Jim 2 is a direct sequel to Shiny's mega-hit. Earthworm Jim. if you've played the first game, then you'll have some sort of idea of what to expect; insane, "wacky" humor, fiendish puzzles, and a heck of a lot of gameplay for your gaming buck. This time around, Jim's missions are even weirder. How else would you explain the Dadaist missions Jim's sent on? They range from having to bounce puppies off of a marshmallow to safety (if he fails, the puppies go splat) to fever-pitch battles against rampaging file cabinets.

The Saturn version of Earthworm Jim 2 features enhanced graphics and music, as well as the possibility of secret levels and even more cheat codes. Keep in mind, though, that these are only vicious rumors, and we can neither confirm or deny them. You'll have to see for yourselves when the game is released this Spring.

You know him, you love him; he has his own TV show. Earthworm Jim is at the top of his game.Things are going smoothly for the pop icon as he decides to take on the world of 32-bit.

EJ2, for the Saturn, remains one of the freshest, most enjoyable games ever made. Don't expect to find anything new in this edition of the game, though. Unlike the special edition of the first game for the Sega CD, EJ2 will enjoy no new material on Saturn. What it does have, though, are much better graphics and sound, which make him brighter, louder and well worth playing all over again.

David Perry and the folks at Shiny were nice enough to give us a sneak preview of Earthworm Jim 2. With more levels, better graphics and a twisted story line, EWJ2 looks better than the original. The pictures you see here are of the Super NES and Genesis versions that are only 20 percent complete. Many things could change from no until you can get your hands on it.

EWJ2 takes Jim on a quest for enlightenment on the Planet of Monsters. Much to his dismay, Psy-Crow is back to cause trouble. The crow has taken Peter Puppy's pups and is about to marry the princess. What's a worm to do? It's better than the first!

  • Playmates for Genesis

Everyone's favorite bait, Earthworm Jim, is back for more slimy gaming in Earthworm Jim 2. If we're lucky, they'll bring back that old lady eating the worms for the TV ad. You know what to expect - good innovative action, with a sense of humor. It's still a side-scroller, but not many sides-strollers are put together the way EJ is.

New powers, like inflating his head, are sure to keep this game interesting. It's a sequel, but it's still going to be one of the best 16-bit games around this Christmas. Next month we'll dissect EJ2 in a full review.

Everyone's favorite wacky annelid is back for more! Shiny Entertainment has knuckled down and is getting ready for a second go-round with ol' Earthworm Jim, and man, does he look more off-the-wall than ever.

With stage names like 'Circus of the Scars', 'Lorenzo's Soil', 'Worm Burger', and 'Peter, Pound, and Mary', you can safely bet that Jim won't be settling down and getting all serious on us. In fact, after his appearance in the nude in Earthworm Jim Special Edition for Sega CD, we're kind wondering how he's gonna top himself.

With all the empty hype and lukewarm big-name releases nowadays, it's nice to know there is one bunch you can always count on for awesome games. Shiny Entertainment opens up a can of very fun worms with Earthworm Jim 2. Who needs an expensive next-generation system when excellent 16-bit games like Earthworm Jim 2 are still coming out?

Jungle Jim

Spread out over several extraordinarily diverse stages, this epic pits Jim once more against his archenemy Psy-Crow, who's whisking Princess-What's-Her-Name off to Lost Vegas for a quickie wedding. Accompanying Psy-Crow is his wicked bunch of hench-things, including Major Mucus, Bob the Killer Goldfish, and Evil the Cat.

Okay, the plot is essentially the same, and so, for that matter, is the worm. But the levels ain't. They range from a vertical ascent on a moonlit night (Jim inflates and deflates his head to get to the top) to a nerve-racking journey through an intestinal track (Jim, transformed into a blind cave salamander, navigates wide and narrow passages lined with deadly Villi).

ProTips:

  • Villi People-Avoid the bumpers near the Villi walls, which slam you into the harmful digestive lining.
  • Udderly Abducted - Ha UFO grabs one of your cows, whip the force field encircling the cow in order to free it.

Jim 2 also pays tribute to its video game, heritage with a Pong-like game and a 3/4-overhead-view shooter stage that recalls the arcade classic Zaxxon. Tired of standard level exits? Wait until the end of the ISO 9000 stage, where the exit door runs all over the screen.

Every two levels or so, Jim enters a bonus stage called Puppy Love, which replaces the rocket ride from the previous game. Armed with a large marshmallow, Jim must frantically scramble back and forth to safely bounce a series of little puppies to the right side of the screen. If five puppies splat on the ground, Peter will get very angry, and we know what he does when that happens.

Graphic Action

Of course, Jim wouldn't have such a unique personality if not for the superb graphics. An improvement over the original, Jim 2 looks just like a cartoon with colorful multi- scrolling backgrounds and detailed foregrounds.

  • Lorenzo's Soil -- Shoot the dirt over the flame to extinguish it
  • Puppy Love -- The bomb is the most important thing -- make sure it gets to Peter, even If you must drop one of Peter's perky puppy pals.
  • See Jim Run. Run, Jim, Run -- Use Jim's whip to slow down Psy-Crow.

Special touches include an electric chair and an iron maiden that provide a few laughs when Jim comes into contact with them and his trembling legs when he carries heavy cows, pigs, and mouse cages to safety.

Great Tunes, Control

Jim 2 uses several borrowed tunes with excellent results.

Inflated Head -- Avoid dangerous enemies by hitting the light bulbs. Although this damages you some, you will become momentarily invincible and your balloon won't pop.

Classical pieces like a Beethoven adagio make compellingly offbeat accompaniments to stages like Villi People.

The game is also filled to the hilt with hilarious sound effects: Jim's yelps and screams, whimpering puppies, and mooing cows are just a few of the sounds that punctuate the audio track.

Controlling Jim is a snap. His move scheme is basically the same as in the first game with the addition of two new talents: Jim can briefly block attacks, and he can use his friend Snott (who travels in Jim's backpack) to grab onto sticky ceilings so Jim can cross dangerous gaps. With Snott in tow, Jim can reach 1-ups and goodies that would otherwise be unattainable.

Dirt-Cheap Bosses

While the levels are huge and challenging, not to mention loaded with hidden areas and items, the bosses, sadly, are not. Most of the end-level baddies take only a few hits to kill (the giant larva on a unicycle at the end of Lorenzo's Soil, for example). It's almost as if the programmers wiped themselves out creating the levels and added the bosses as an afterthought.

  • Level Ate -- At the grill, shoot the eggs suspended overhead. You can stand on the frying yolk without being injured.
  • ISO 9000 -- At the end of the stage, don't bother chasing the door around; just pick up the piano at the entrance and hurt it at the exit

Top-Grade Bait

The first game being what it was, the expectations for the Earthworm Jim sequel were enormous. Jim 2 meets -- if not surpasses -- all of them.

If Jim 2 has a flaw, it's that the game is so much fun in the initial play-through that the second and third times around pale horribly in comparison. But that's an extremely minor criticism. From gameplay to graphics, Shiny has released another first-rate can of worms.

Earthworm Jim 2 is the follow-up of Earthworm Jim, a platform video game developed by Shiny Entertainment. The first game was released in 1994, while Earthworm Jim 2 was published in 1996 in the United States. The game was created and narrated by Doug TenNapel and follows the story of Jim, an earthworm superhero, and his new mate Snott. They are followed as they try to rescue Jim's beloved Princess What's-Her-Name from marrying Psy-Crow by force.

The game is similar with the first one, and contains a lot of surrealist and irrelevant humor. Although there are signs of similarity, the gameplay of the second version is more diverse, with each stage having a different style and mission, but also new weapons.

Although Earthworm Jim 2 is based on platformer elements, it also features other genres, such as mazes, trivia contests, arcade game style and a marathon race. The gameplay was very entertaining and unique for the 90s.

Jim's movement is different from the first game as well. He can no longer use his head to swing or to hover like a helicopter. Jim is now accompanied by Snott, his mate, who allows him to float by morphing into a parachute. Snott has to reside in Jim's backpack for the main character to be able to fly.

The game was released for lots of platforms, thanks to its popularity among young teenagers. The version for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was one of the first on the market, and Sega Genesis released it later on for Wii via Virtual Console. Super Nintendo Entertainment System's version features better visual and audio, but also new backgrounds.

The PC version comes with more voice clips and a CD soundtrack. The PlayStation version is similar to the one on PC, but there are several new backgrounds and new questions. The Sega Saturn version is the same as the one on PlayStation. The GameBoy Advance version is part of the SNES release, and it has been widely criticized for its poor graphics, sound and bad gameplay.

The first versions of the game received very good feedback. Both critics and users were very happy with its humor and innovative gameplay. Most of the sources stated the game is better than the first release. The lack of two-player mode is one of this game's flaws.

However, the PlayStation release was not so popular. It received poor reviews from several sources, with scores such as 3 out of 10. The 2002 release for GameBoy Advance was criticized as well, as stated before. IGN reviewer Craig Harris gave the game a 4 out of 10 rating and called it "unplayable".

Your favorite annelid has returned in Earthworm Jim 2, the sequel to one of the funniest side-scrollers ever.

Earthworm Jim 2 features everything that made the original a classic, including fluid animation (thanks to Shiny's proprietary Animotion system), tricked-out gameplay that keeps the player guessing, and more humor than should be legal. The fiendish Psy-Crow has kidnapped Jim's girlfriend, Princess What's-Her-Name, and Jim's out to get her back again.

You play the role of Earthworm Jim as you traverse through more crazy worlds filled with some of the weirdest and wildest enemies you’ve ever seen. Princess What's-Her-Name has been kidnapped by Psy-Crow, and it's up to you to save her before your arch nemesis does who-knows-what to What's-Her-Name!

There are 12 brand spankin' new levels to push your platforming skills to the limit, and several characters make return engagements in the second installment of this popular series including Peter Puppy and Bob the Goldfish. While using a Snott swing may sound ridiculously childish, Earthworm Jim 2 isn't just for the kids; gamers of all skill levels will find that the game is fun, unique, and most of all challenging wth hilarious characters, level designs, and music that will keep you coming back for more.

With flying pigs, falling grannies, and levels with such profound names as "Anything but Tangerines" and "Jim is Now a Blind Cave Salamander," you know you're in for some worm-whipping, side-scrolling action from the masters of the genre!

Earthworm Jim 2 features:

  • Classic action-packed, addictive platform gameplay;
  • Weapons - Over 5 weapons to choose from to battle all of Jim's enemies;
  • Wacky levels - Untraditional level designs, only known to Earthworm Jim;
  • Returning Characters - All the original characters that made Jim an instant classic. (Princess What's-Her-Name, Psy-Crow, Peter Puppy, Bob the Goldfish, Evil the Cat);
  • Whip, run, jump, fly and snot swing your way to victory and for the love of Princess What's-Her-Name.

Earthworm Jim 2 is a platform video game released in 1995. Gameplay is similar to the first game, with Jim jumping and running through the levels. The game originally appeared on the Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES and MS-DOS, with enhanced versions later released on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. It was also ported to the Game Boy Advance. There are 5 weapons more than the original game to collect. Characters like Princess Whats-Her-Name and Psy-Crow appear.

Just like part one and just like I said before for Part one. This is a really cool and enjoyable game. The controls are the same but Jim has a happy face now instead of looking pissed and is more hyper (Jogging in place instead on staying still). Well, I said the controls are the same and they are except for one change, Instead of rotating your head like a propeller, you have a boogerpack, which you use to go across booger ceilings to get across an area. This Game is Highly Recommended by me, JGCD!

This is a GREAT GAME!!! My only problem with Genesis versions of Super Nintendo games is that the music of the Genesis version is never as good by comparison. Other than that, GREAT GAME!!!
