Elsword

Elsword is a very popular free to play side scrolling action RPG style game that is picking up some real momentum. Is this a free to play game that is worth your time? Keep reading to see why so many people are getting hooked on Elsword.

The Right Character

While I like an in-depth character creator. I was happy to see that Elsword kept it simple. You only have four default types to select from. These are what you would expect in a game like this, one that can use a sword and one that can do melee attacks and so on. Each character has their own story and motivations which is cool and each character has a really cool look to them. They kind of remind me of the characters from Kingdom Hearts if they were in an anime and to be honest with you and that is a good thing.

Always Something To Do

One of the things that I like about Elsword is that after the tutorial level (which is actually very useful) you then have a lot of things you can do. In town, you can do the usual RPG things like buy equipment, fix your weapons and so on. Here though you can also get new quests and even take on other human players in some PvP if that is your thing. I for one loved heading into each dungeon and just putting a grade A beating on anything that came my way. As this is an RPG, the more you play the stronger your character gets and the better moves you will be able to do.

Satisfying Combat

While the art style is what sucked me in (as well as the fact this is free to play) it was the ever so satisfying combat that kept me coming back to Elsword. The game plays very easy. You move with the arrow keys and Z and X are your attacks. Elsword has a very simple combo system to do and you will be dishing out high combos in no time at all. These are very satisfying to pull off and I tended to prefer to use standard combos than my special attacks. Each of the four characters has their own set of special moves and these can be done at the press of a key, but they do use mana. As this is an RPG there are plenty of new skills and abilities for you to unlock which is great as so far I have had fun testing them all out.

Watch That Stamina!

As this is a free to play game, you can only play it so much per day. You have a stamina bar and when you are in a dungeon taking on a quest. Your stamina bar will slowly drain. Once your stamina bar is depleted you can longer play for that day. Before you freak out, let me tell you that you do not have to spend any real money to keep on playing. That is because you stamina bar easily gives you a couple of hours of gameplay per day which is more than enough for a game like this.

Elsword is one of the more fun free to play games I have played recently. It has a really cool art style and the four different characters are all very interesting. The combat is the best part of the game and if you love side-scrolling RPG’s that have a very heavy emphasis on kicking butt, you will have a blast playing Elsword. The stamina system is not as bad as some people say and I never once found the temptation to spend more money to play.

7.5/10

Pros:

  • Very easy to get into
  • The anime art style is really cool
  • Combat is fantastic and very easy to get to grips with
  • Good progression system
  • Great if you like action heavy RPG’s

Cons:

  • Some might want to play for more than the stamina system allows
  • Not sure it is the kind of game that will keep you hooked for months
