Geometry Dash

Geometry Dash was one of those games that I had to play as I heard so many people raving about how insane it was. If you love platform games, rhythm based games and games that let you create that are all wrapped up with a blend of addictive, challenging and fun gameplay, Geometry Dash could be the next game that gets its hooks into you.

It Is All About The Beats

What is the best way to describe Geometry Dash? Well, the developers call it a rhythm based platform game and at its core that is what it is. The game features many levels and the soundtrack is truly epic. You will need to listen to the music and this is really what guides you as you make jumps and avoid what feels like ten million hazards that get in your way. I found that Geometry Dash is a game that gets you into this Zen like state as you play it and it managed to be both fun and frustrating at the same time. You will need to jump, fly and even flip as you try to make your way through each of the challenging levels.

An All Out Assault On The Senses

One of the things that I love about Geometry Dash is the overall style. Of course, as this is a rhythm game, the soundtrack is great. However, the way the game looks really does knock your socks off and it is quite clever. You see this is a game where as well as listening to the music, you need to keep an eye on what is coming in front of you. Each level is jam packed with color though that your eyes can wander and when they do…. BAM you are done!

Practice Makes Perfect

Geometry Dash is one of the most challenging games that I have played recently. Each time you play the main game, you get one chance, one life and no continues! This means if you screw up you have to start the whole thing over from the beginning. Let me tell you this really keeps you on your toes. Thankfully there is a practice mode that lets you get to grips with each level. Also, this practice mode is neat in that it lets you experience all of the cool music that the game has to offer.

An Endless Supply Of Levels

While there are 19 super tough levels that the developers have created for you. Geometry Dash also features a level creator that you can have some fun with. Now full disclosure here, I am not the best at stuff like this. However, I was able to have some fun creating and uploading my own levels as the level creator is very easy to get the hang of. As I write this there are already a ton of user created levels for you to play. This is awesome as it means that there is always going to be a bunch of new levels for you try out. If you think that the main levels are tough, just want until you see some of the insane levels that the community has created!

I had a lot of fun with Geometry Dash. It is one of the more challenging rhythm based platformers I have played and can be frustrating. The gameplay though is so tight and the soundtrack so good that it makes you want to keep on having just one more try. Add to this the fact that there is the ability to make your own levels and play other Geometry Dash players levels and you have a game that is going to keep you busy for a very long time. Geometry Dash manages to be fun, challenging, frustrating and addictive all at the same time.

8/10

Pros:

  • Each level has its own unique soundtrack
  • The presentation is very vivid
  • Easy to get the hang of
  • Challenging to master
  • Tons of user created content to have fun with

Cons:

  • Might be a little challenging for some
  • Can be a little buggy

Game Reviews

Geometry Dash is one of those games that everyone in the world has played at least once. It got to be viral a long time ago and is still an essential part of the world of rhythm-based games. Without it, plenty of people wouldn’t dare to try to create their own games, and many musicians would be in the dark, waiting to be discovered by a Newgrounds addict or a shady producer. Yes, Geometry Dash changed the life of a lot of people.

What Can a Cube Do?

The whole attractiveness of Geometry Dash is that is purely skill-based. You can either be really bad or really good at it; that’s what every rhythm game is about.

The premise of Geometry Dash is simple; you control a cube, and you have to avoid obstacles to reach the 100% and complete the level. That’s it. There are vehicles you can use, like the ship, the UFO, or the wave, and there are items on the map that can make you jump higher, change your gravity orientation, your size, or your speed.

While the premise is very simple, and looks a lot like older games like The Impossible Game, Geometry Dash is better because it goes well with the music that is playing in the background. There will be times when you’ll be jumping at the same rhythm as the tempo of the music, and there will be times when you’ll be clicking alongside the melody of a beautiful song.

An Active Community

Geometry Dash counts 22 official levels designed by its creator, Robtop Games. They are a lot of levels, but, after beating them, you might think that there’s nothing else to do. Well, that’s wrong, as Geometry Dash has an online mode where you can go and play the levels created by other players. If you go to the Featured tab, you’ll see plenty of levels to play; there are more than 100 Million levels on the server!

The game also has an affiliation with Newgrounds, which means the fans can use songs uploaded in Newgrounds. This has been a blessing for a lot of musicians out there, as they got famous after appearing in famous levels of the game.

A Worrying Performance

Geometry Dash is terribly optimized; it lags a lot even in high-end devices and it’s because the game is designed to run in phone devices, so, it’ll waste all the resources of your GPU and will put your CPU to struggle.

That’s not all; the game is filled with a large variety of bugs inside the gameplay, the menu, music-related, editor mode-related, etc. If you are a veteran player, you can adapt to them but is no lie that newbies will struggle with it.

7.5

Geometry Dash is a fun and addictive game. It’s pretty challenging and makes you get angry. The problem with the game is that the developer, Robtop Games, has a lot of time disappeared and hasn’t updated the game nor fixed the bugs of it.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Great music and gameplay
  • It’s pretty challenging
  • It has an active community so the game constantly feels fresh

Cons

  • The game has several years without getting updated
  • It’s filled with bugs
  • It doesn’t run in all the devices

It's always fascinating how developers can make games out of the bare basics. Geometry Dash is what it sounds like - a game where shapes will be running through obstacles. That's not to say that gameplay will be that straightforward, though. Other geometric objects will get in your way, and it's your job to avoid them!

Geometry Dash is a mobile game that looks to get players racking their cognitive skills. It's made to be accessible but ultimately challenging at the same time. But how long can you keep yourself interested in a floating bunch of shapes? Only getting stuck into this flat, peculiar world will tell us.

Ain't No Math in this Place

Being a mobile game, Geometry Dash would have to have relatively simple, accessible mechanics for any players to give it the time of day. It incorporates that feat, introducing a minimalistic control schematic. Players will control a bouncing cube, making it jump by only tapping your screens. Your objective? Complete each level by surviving the obstacles before you.

Where Geometry Dash would seem straightforward, alas, it is not. The speed of the screen, the complexity of the jump sequences, and varying assets make surviving each level increasingly tricky. The game isn't designed to be relentless right from the get-go like some others but does walk you into some pretty frustrating times.

The gameplay is pretty elementary, but let's take a moment to talk about the visuals and music. Honestly, it gives Geometry Dash its sense of uniqueness. The colorful and humorous environments paired with the epic soundtrack softens the blow of growing annoyances at the game's difficulty. They do make you want to start again once you inevitably fail a level.

Geometry Dash is a decent little mobile game, but it's no means revolutionary. It's one of those things you can pull out and give a go in five minutes or spend hours on depending on how determined you are to finish it. However, the endgame difficulty is likely to put a lot of players off who simply don't have the patience to fail.

It's Hip To Be a Square

Geometry Dash takes clear inspiration from The Impossible Game in almost every respect. However, the former does give some headway to casual players to give them a kinder introduction. The latter wants to wind players up with its requirement for pinpoint accuracy on jump sequences.

7

All in all, Geometry Dash is a decent accomplice to your travels. It also has built an intriguing community. Players attempt to outdo each other in showcasing their cognitive skills. It's easy to recommend because of its accessibility, but you can be sure most players won't stick around too long. Nobody wants to get too frustrated with their mobile games.

Pros:

  • An enjoyable minimalistic approach to gameplay
  • Easy-to-learn, hard-to-master
  • Many players will enjoy the increasing number of challengers

Cons:

  • Increasing difficulty makes players want to abandon the game
  • Nothing particularly unique about the game
