Looks aren't everything. Ask anybody who's dated Shannon Doherty, or played Legend, Seika's new medieval hack-n-slash game. The seven gorgeous levels of forests, castles, and caves deserve exciting action, but Legend's slow-walking, sword- wielding hero just doesn't cut it.

A Legend in Its Own Time...

The artwork is Legend's true legend. Legend's colors and backgrounds are spectacular -- purple skies, verdant fields, and detailed castles fill the screen with the best images this side of a Robin Hood movie. Nightfall and inclement weather add extra dimensions, plus the sprites are large and well rendered. The graphics compensate for the sound effects, which lack luster, and the music is too modern for the medieval theme. This is a show to watch, not listen to.

...Or a Legend in Its Own Mind?

Unfortunately, games aren't merely to be viewed, they're to be played, and that's where Legend slips into the Dark Ages. How much unrelieved fighting can you take? You'll find out, because that's all there is. You plod along, jump from side to side, move slightly into the background, and whack gangs of guards over and over again.

ProTips:

  • Get two enemies on one side and you'll take them out simultaneously.
  • Bonus stages come with their own PROTIPS.
  • In the bonus stages, open the Treasure Chest you have the most keys for.

In most games, a two-player option adds to the fun and enhances the game play, but not in Legend. The two characters look the same, and their ability to fight back-to-back makes the not-so-tough challenge even easier.

Don't defeat enemies off-screen. If you do, you can't pick up the Items they drop when they're defeated.

Throughout the game, there are only slight differences among the enemies. Bosses add a little more variety, but they're not awesome. There's some magic to throw around, too, but overall the fights are one-dimensional. If Seika wanted to make this a kind of Moat Fighter II, they should've put in richer characters and varied the controls.

Stand your two players back-to-back for a strong.

While you may not have seen medieval graphics this good, you've probably played a better 16-bit game in this genre, like Golden Axe. Legend is for hard-core hack-n-slash fans and art collectors.

Game Reviews

Kadore, the hero, must venture out in the hostile world and defeat several enemies leading up to the final enemy Clovis, the son of the evil Beldor, king of Sellech! Each level has a Boss, with some having a Mid-Boss as well! There is also a two-player option!

Two-Player Action

Two people can play simultaneously in Legend! One fighter uses a sword, the other uses a two-sided battle axe! However, you can only use the axe in the two-player simultaneous mode!

The Main Map and The Bonus Staged

After completing Stage 1, you will receive a map. This map will appear before each stage there-after, showing you where to go! In the Bonus Stage, use the keys you gathered to open the chests for a variety of items!

Stage 1: The Beginning of the Quest/The Old Wizard

Once you exit the safety of your castle, you are completely on your own! When enemies appear on the screen (and don't worry, there are no friendlies for you to "accidentally" hit), they will always manage to surround you, so getting them all in a corner and slashing them out is impossible! The Mid-Boss attacks with a big stick, but save your magic for the End-Boss: a giant tree that uses its long arm to attack! You will take some hits here, but attack furiously!

Stage 2: The City

It's raining, but the fight goes on! New enemies will show up: dogs! They only take one hit to kill but are very hard to hit! Jump slashes are the most effective moves!

Boss: This big guy uses a barrel! He will roll it, and use it to block and charge at you! Jump kicks work best, but he will also get in a few hits!

Stage 3: The Black Temple

There are two sections to this third stage. The first is a trip through the misty woods, where you will be attacked by familiar guards with swords and spears. However, the next part introduces evil sorcerers who use magic for their attacks! They will appear at the "window" section of the level, so be ready!

The Jail/Stage 4: The old Mill

At the start of Stage 4, you will fight the usual enemies. However, at the second bridge you cross, a new enemy will appear (A)! He has a crossbow that shoots a net. If you get caught, you will be taken to the Jail Stage, where you must defeat a tough Mid-Boss and an even tougher Boss (B)! If you escape the Jail, you will go to the Old Mill, and must fight your way to the top where a flying fire-breathing dragon (C) waits! Use jump kicks on it, but beware of more walking enemies that can't wait to fight you.

Boss: This Boss levitates in air and shoots lightning bolts! He also animates the gargoyle on the wall that attacks with air dives and punches!

In an attempt to reclaim the Kingdom of Sellech, the wicked Prince Clovis has summoned the evil soul of Beldor, a terrible warrior. To save the land, you set out to fight the many minions of the prince, so that Beldor might be contained once again. Travel through swamps, dungeons, and even storm the castle.

Legend contains side-scrolling fighting action, and has superb graphics. The music is done quite well, and the sounds aren't too shabby either. This one was at the Summer CES, and it played very smoothly. Seika is paying a lot of attention to detail to make Legend one of the top action/adventure games. Look for this one when it comes out; I'm sure you'll be surprised by this cart.
