Metal Warriors is a side-scrolling shoot ‘em up game in which the player takes control of one of six available assault suits, each with different looks and functions. Due to its gameplay and level design being similar to that of Assault Suits Valken (known as Cybernator outside Japan) and also due to having the same publisher, it is sometimes mistaken for the sequel of the fore mentioned game.

The plot is rather thin: in the year 2102, only a handful of men remain who are capable of defending Earth from the relentless assault of the Dark Axis, led by their evil dictator Venkar Amon. The player is, naturally, one of those men. No other details are given, and the game basically throws the protagonist into the fray after a mission briefing. The game concludes with the inevitable fight against Vankar Amon, whose defeat will bring peace once again.

Despite this, Metal Warriors is praised by veterans for its top-notch graphics, innovative split-screen mode which had two players fight each other in the suits of their choice, and the ability to leave the mobile suit at any time and search for a new one. Instead of having a health bar, as damage is taken, the mobile suit shows visible deterioration until it is completely destroyed, the only option being to find a replacement. The game also makes full use of the console’s controller, making each of the mecha suits’ gameplay truly different.

Continuing in pedestrian form is definitely not recommended, however it can turn the tide of battle when fighting another player. There are areas which can only be reached in the before mentioned pedestrian form, thus the opponent can be forced to leave their mobile suit which can be taken and used against them! Sneaky, but efficient.

Throughout the levels, the player can find various power-ups, ranging from temporary weapons to boosts in strength or repairs to the suit. Some of these power-ups are not left in plain sight, but a little effort and exploration can make a breeze out of an otherwise impossible level.

Highly enjoyable and innovative for its time, Metal Warriors unfortunately did not garner much reputation and was overlooked for the most part. This is quite possibly due to its limited release within the US and lack of a release in Europe. Still, the game left many players wishing for a sequel, perhaps involving two-player cooperative missions.

Metal Warriors features:

  • Six mecha suits to choose from, each with its unique look and abilities.
  • Leave your mecha suit whenever you wish, to search for a new one or reach otherwise inaccessible areas.
  • Duel another player using your favourite suits in “head to head” mode.

Oh no! Another mesh game! What's this? It's got a two player mode? And the graphics look kinda cool? And there's even some real tough missions? Wow! You know, this one might be worth a shot! Try this on a rental basis first! It's OK!

You'd have expected a little more innovation from the combination of LucasArts and Konami, but while Metal Warriors isn't bad for what it is, it ain't like the world needed another armored robot game. This is standard (although extremely challenging) side-scrolling action fare. There's nine missions, in a variety of different styles of armor, some of which you can even find during the missions by capturing enemy armored suits!

The graphics are a cut above average, but there's not much here you haven't seen before. It does, however, provide a decent challenge. Like a lot of action titles released through Konami, the difficulty level is, well, up there, with one or two missions that are sure to have you tearing the hair off any hapless pets or siblings who happen to be around.

It's also worth mentioning that a good bit of this cart's meg size is taken up by the lengthy cut scenes. They're mildly impressive at first, less so as time goes on, since they all begin to look the same after the first two or three. Still, they add a lot of atmosphere. Oh, and there's another added bonus - the game includes a feature that lets two players go head-to-head. Each player takes the armored warrior of his choice and the two of you get to run around taking shots at each other. This gets old kind of fast, but if s good for a chuckle or two.

If you're looking for something new, look else-where, but hungry action fans should eat this title up - it's good looking, challenging, and has a lot of variety. The worst thing you can say about it is that you've probably played something a lot like this before.

If you like to shoot first and think later, Metal Warriors is for you. Its shooting action is a blast in more ways than one.

Ways of the Warriors

Fans of 1993's Cybernator will recognize Konami's latest action/shooter. Metal Warriors puts you inside a flying and walking robot blasting its way through a simple side-view mazelike battlefield teeming with enemies.

ProTip: When you come to an apparent dead end, try firing your Energy Cannon (Button Y). It blasts through certain walls, ceilings, and floors.

The nine levels have different goals (usually rescues or search-and-destroy missions), but the action's the same:

Blast everything in sight, find new weapons, and blast some more. It's explosive fun, especially in the Head to Head mode where two players compete in smaller arenas. The disparate levels in this good-looking game include the inside of a huge spacecraft, a jungle, and ice fields. Sharp details and bright colors combine for strong visuals, with dramatic cut scenes adding good comic-book intensity.

Populating the diverse worlds are tons of well-defined robots, high-tech gun emplacements, and darting airborne attackers. As a nifty touch, some of your enemies are tiny humans who are like annoying mosquitoes to your big bad 'bot. And everything's clearly visible -- the onscreen action is uncluttered by status bars, timers, or point totals.

After blasting through the orange blocks, rescue your Mission One shipmate at the lower left Shoot a passageway through to the left to escape.

The sounds are the only relative weakness. While they're not bad, they aren't really distinctive. Standard explosions and feeble grunts are layered over typically torrid techno-rock. It's not quite the heavy metal these metal- heads might've inspired.

Constantly refer to your map so you'll know if you're heading down a blind alley.

Test Your Mettle

Superior controls make this game stand out. You start with an energy shield, saber and cannon, as well as a jet pack for transportation. Later, you find a variety of homing weapons and grenades for extra firepower. What's more, you can make your tiny pilot jump from his Metal Warrior to shoot other little guys. You can then guide him to a pilotless Metal Warrior, where he jumps in and fires an array of new weapons. Control variety like this makes for hours of stunning gunning.

Easy mazes, fast fun, and gun-happy thrills -- hey, you don't have to be a rocket scientist to play Metal Warriors. You just have to love action games. Good ones like this are in shoot supply.

Stay airborne as you battle big guns. As a mobile target, you're harder to hit

Well what more can i say other than Lucas Arts made this game!, Or though it doesn't have the normal humour of the Lucas Arts games, Think Zombies Ate My Neighbours, Ghoul Patrol and Maniac Mansion!, But still is quite a good game i just wish they added a little bit of the funny stuff instead of going down the arcade route!.
