Adding to the tank of the sequel-fueled machine known as the gaming industry, Rampage 2: Universal Tour brings us more rampaging monster mayhem from Avalanche and Midway. Unlike some sequels however, Universal Tour actually gives you a broader building-bashing experience--instead of the same old, same old (ahem).

There will be 125 levels in the finished version of Rampage 2: Universal Tour, and five new bonus levels. These levels take you to a variety of locations like Rampage: World Tour, except this time there are different times of day, and different types of weather to contend with. Consequently, bad weather makes taking down buildings or making your way around a level more difficult--say, if it's raining or snowing.

With several new characters, going through all 125 levels will be a bit more interesting, and with the three-player mode, replay should be high. Each of the characters (including the original three: Lizzie, Ralph and George) have their own unique special moves that are quite powerful. By eating people and other food items, your power meter for this special move increases. Once it is at a respectable level, you can unleash it and do quite a bit of damage to a building, your enemies, etc. In addition to the characters available at start, look for hidden ones.

Game Reviews

Rampage returns to the PlayStation with four new monster's, over 125 levels to destroy (from cities on Earth to outer-space settings), and new bonus games and special moves. Up to three players can link up for tag-team destructive action as the new monsters seek to free the original three Rampagers--George, Lizzy, and Ralph--from captivity.

Despite all its new features, this Rampage provides the same gaming experience as its predecessor: punch, kick, jump--and punch some more. The graphics are nice, but just serve to decorate the flat, linear settings. (Why not take the Rampage franchise to the next level with 3D environments?) Controls are responsive for the limited move options, while the sounds are as unadventurous as the graphics. This Rampage is a rental.

ProTips:

  • Score more time points by destroying buildings together.
  • Don't waste time with anything on the road that doesn't shoot at you.

Endless destructive action returns to the N64 in Rampage Universal Tour. The usual trio of George, Lizzy, and Ralph has again been captured, and their freedom rests in the fists of three new mutantmonsters who must destroy everything in their path to help them. Up to three players can join forces to punch and kick their way through five sections, from Denver to Halleys comet., as well as compete in five new bonus levels featuring games like Human/Alien Squashing.

Rampage's appeal has always been its multiplayer contests, but UTs gameplay quickly becomes monotonous after you tire of pounding everything in sight Furthermore, UTs merely adequate graphics and grating heavy-metal soundtrack don't help, either. Rampage 2: Universal Tour is stricdy rental material.
