Somewhere in the far reaches of the universe lies Putty Moon, a strange world whose inhabitants are blue blobs of goo known as Putties. Putty Moon was a peaceful enough berg - its citizens were entirely ignorant of the rest of the universe and its inhabitants. You can imagine their surprise when a large spaceship landed, bringing hordes of surprisingly un-blue, un-round beings. Although the Putties were naturally curious about their visitors, all that changed when they began to be kidnapped and packaged as "Shriek!" bubblegum. While the Putty populous properly panicked, one brave soul is willing to face the aliens and their evil leader, the wizard Dazzledaze.

It's risky to center a game on blobs of putty, but the goofiness of Super Putty works in the game's favor. While actual game play bears a certain similarity to Mario-ish action games, the various moves that are unique to putty inject originality into the title. Unfortunately, the lack of a continue feature in later levels means you probably end up repeating some sections one too many times.

Game Reviews

When the evil Dazzledaze and Dweezil attempt to conquer the squishy, blue Putties on the Putty Moon, only Super Putty can save them. This mind-bending, body-twisting, shape-shifting blob uses a wide variety of unique skills to do battle in this challenging and creative game.

ProTips:

  • You'll find Uncle Ted if you punch the green brick pillar in the lower right-hand comer of the Moon.
  • Ricochet off the walls and use ladders to reach tricky platforms.

Putty in Your Hands

Putty's a pretty flexible guy. It's a good thing he's so versatile, because he has no weapons, only his special skills against Dazzledaze's endless, multifaceted army. Basically, Putty can hop-n-bop his way to glory by bouncing on enemies' heads. He can also defrost his frozen friends with a quick slap, and absorb whatever's next to him (a trick similar to Kirbys famous inhale move on the NES). Putty can soak up good or bad guys and then release them somewhere else. This nifty is the key to impressive as the graphics, do saying his friends, and it's what separates, this Cool Putt from Cool Spot.

Watch for the spikes -- one touch and it's pow, Putty.

The challenge lies in the zillions of flying obstacles awaiting the Punster. The mazes on the six levels get increasingly more complex, and the enemies get faster and meaner. The controls also increase the difficulty: Putty often leaps so high that he sometimes leaves the screen, making it hard to position him to land on small moving platforms. Putty's also not very fast or agile. The simple training level called the Gym introduces you to his basic moves, but young gamers will need plenty of practice.

Pretty Putty

The graphics are, in a word, dazzling. Bright colors, attractive shapes, and imaginative enemies of all shapes and sizes fill the screen. The Putty Moon is like a gorgeous hi-tech version of Kirby's beautiful Dream Land with wonderful Toy Towns, Twilight Zones and Oriental Rooms at the end of the game.

The sounds, though not as impressive as the graphics, do bring a sense of humor to the game. Putty burps when he absorbs someone and all kinds of boingy noises complement the quick action. The rollicking soundtrack prow appropriately fast rhythms for the frenzied fun.

Nutty Putty

There's a lot to like in Super Putty. The game has a real sense of humor -- expect encounters with a hot dog named Steve MacLean and an exploding Kamikaze Chicklet.
