For those of you who can only take yourTaz in small doses, Taz in Escape from Mars for the Game Gear is just what you need! The devilish dervish is back, but if you're no fan, this cart is no fun.

Calling All Mars

The story line and game play closely follow the Genesis version (see ProReview, GamePro, October 1994). Taz is devil-napped by Marvin for his zoo. You whirl through five levels, knocking out enemies and searching for the exit as you try to get back home.

Besides his beast-bashing spin, Taz may also find rocks to spit and fire to singe his opponents. As expected, plenty of health-ups and extra items help Taz on his way.

Taz the World TUrns

The graphics are a shrunken version of those in the Genesis version, and some detail was lost in the translation. The well-done backgrounds, however, have just the right amount of rendering to please the eye.

The expected dismal Game Gear drone accompanies the action. The Taz theme gets on your nerves after just two sittings, and Taz's uproarious roar is also stifled. The controls are also hard to get used to: You must make carefully timed leaps to spin up walls. The Genesis version was easier to stay on top of.

Fan Taz-tic?

If it weren't for Taz, this game would just be another jump-n-bump adventure. No one thought to spruce things up, leaving us with a ho-hum conundrum. Taz is definitely one for the fans, but the rest of us won't spin like crazy.

  • PROTIP: Sometimes shooting fireballs or spinning into blank areas produces goodies.

This isn't so much a game as it is a real Warner Brothers cartoon that you can control. The Taz is back and eating everything in his path to escape from Marvin the Martian. All fans of cartoons everywhere should have this game!

We are surrounded by imports. The Japanese ship us cars. Columbians send us coffee. But none of these products are more popular than the one we get in a simple wooden box from Tasmania: Taz, the little devil.

Why would Marvin the Martian try to do what we couldn't: cage up the walking mouth for the viewing public? Because if he didn't we wouldn't have a game, stupid!

So here's Taz, sitting in a cage at a zoo on Mars. Your job is to get him out and confront Marvin himself. It's not a simple job.

Taz in Escape from Mars isn't the easiest game to play. Its kinda hard controlling a monster that spins in a whirl of dust, destroying all in his path. Getting from one level to the next took more time than I expected. But it's all worth it. This game is, quite simply, fun to play and watch.

While you're playing this game, your friends are going to have as much fun watching it. Wait a few seconds and watch Taz have a seizure. Eat a bomb and watch Taz explode. Or drink some gas and have Taz spit fire. It's all there to see and do!

Graphics-wise, this game could only be better if it were drawn by Fritz Freling himself. The characters would fool your mom into thinking you were watching TV and not playing a game.

Although control of the game is not as smooth it could be, it's easy enough to command so you won't get aggravated with it, and hard enough to keep you from mastering it too quickly. Go get this game!
