Doom with a rock star? Yes, but instead of Cacodemons, you get cacophony.

As a wimpy wannabe rock star, you must fight off your fans by escaping into a virtual-reality world. Beyond your shotgun, you can find plasma bolts, laser bolts, and guided missiles.

Virtuoso's graphics are crisp, clean, and forgettable, and the music tries hard for pulsepounding metal mania. The game's other sound effects can't get past the obtrusive music.

The one-button firing is no hassle - blasting enemies is this game's strong point. Controlling the character is difficult, however, when walking along ledges.

Virtuoso tries hard, but the chords jangle and the music is off-key. Being a rock star isn't easy. This game doesn't make it any easier.

ProTips:

  • Watch the comers In fine Level. Those aren't blocks, they're cannons.
  • Snowmen can be a real In the Ice. Blast them, then up and Mast some more.

With the recent interest in first-person games, some poorly fashioned games were bound to come out. Virtuoso is one such game. The visuals are somewhat choppy, and objects are difficult to see. The game play suffers a lot from hits coming from a place you can't react fast enough to see. The audio doesn't fit, and it isn't very consistent in the types of levels it has. The 3DO can do much better than this. Virtuoso is at best only an average game.

Whoa. Virtuoso tries to jump on the bandwagon of first-person games, but this one doesn't come close. The sheer choppiness of the movement when you walk is enough to drive you batty. It's also very annoying the way your character ducks when he shoots, which adds a delay in the reaction time. Repetitive is also a word that comes to mind. Granted, this style of game isn't the most creative, but at least others were fun. Not so with Virtuoso. Sorry, it's not the game for me.

This is a very good example of how not to make a game. Virtuoso tries too hard to be Doom but falls way short. The most significant boo-boo is the game's choppy scrolling. You turn around and because of the choppiness, you can't tell how far you turn sometimes, so you end up turning too much. Add to that bad animation and poor music, and you've got a game that really suffers. The only redeeming quality of the game is that... well I can't think of one, but I'm sure it's there. RIGHT!

A weird sort of Doom wanna-be. This game adds characters to the first-person perspective, and I don't like it. I get really tired of seeing the rock star/cowboy duck and shoot all the time. The biggest drawback is the fact that you can't see anything in front of you and you must rely on the Map Screen to go anywhere. Also, the music is corny, but it does go along with the game's theme. There are better Doom rip-offs out there. For the desperate Doom fans only.

Get ready to enter a mystical world filled with danger and mystery. Prepare yourself for Virtuoso, the latest 3DO title from the folks at Elite. In Virtuoso, you get to explore all sorts of alien places. Puzzles abound and dark things lurk in the labyrinth-like corridors.

Virtuoso is drawn with great detail in order to give the player a sense of actually being there. It won't be a walk in the park, as you will face dangers that might be so great that even you can't handle them.

If you like adventure-type games, stay on the lookout for Virtuoso. It's a strange title, but a good looking one. Will you enter the world of Virtuoso?
