I am not reviewing a game just now, but more of a service for your PC. Xenia is a way that you can play some of your favorite Xbox 360 games on your PC. It is a great idea and the service just keeps on getting better and better.

Isn't This Just Emulation?

Well yes, it is, but what is wrong with that? The people behind Xenia are not just doing this so people can play Xbox 360 games for free. They are actually doing this (well their site says they are) as a way to research emulation of more demanding games and to see what makes them tick. It is actually pretty fascinating stuff and if you are interested in the way emulation actually works I think you will find it quite interesting.

What Is The Quality Like?

Of course, emulating an Xbox 360 game is a lot harder for a PC to do than emulating something from the 8 or 16-bit era. You, of course, need to have at least a halfway decent PC in order to even try and run some of these games. As I write this there is the better part of 100 Xbox 360 games that can run as they are supposed to. One the site they have a full list of games that they have tried to get working with Xenia. The categories go from playable, gameplay, intro, title, crash, nothing, menus and so on. So if you look at a game like Lego Batman, for example, it says that it is playable so it is safe to assume that it will play without any kind of problems. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, on the other hand, has title next to it so that game will probably not get past the title screen. Saints Row Gat Out Of Hell actually says crash next to it so you know that game is not yet compatible.

Is It Worth Downloading?

This is a tricky one to actually answer. You see the Xbox 360 has a library of very cheap games and an actual Xbox 360 is very cheap. So it would probably be less hassle to just play an Xbox 360 game that way if you really wanted to actually play it. However, if you are like me and have always found the world of emulation interesting then I would say it is worth having a play around with. Even if it is to take one of the games that says it crashes, cannot get past the menus or whatever. Just to see if you can get it to go that little bit further by playing around with it.

Xenia is a pretty impressive Xbox 360 emulator for your PC. I get that this is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I do think it is kind of cool. It is very impressive to see what this guy was able to do and it does make you wonder if someone (or he himself) is going to take Xenia and see if they can make it even better where it can run every game, maybe even do something like 4K support! ?/10 (it really all depends on your interests in the world of emulation)

Pros:

  • There are a lot of games that work great on it
  • It is a fun project
  • Reading about it is very interesting
  • The guy who made it seems really cool
  • More games work than you would think

Cons:

  • Kind of pointless if you actually want to play a specific game
  • Only really of interest to people who get a kick out of emulation
