Gold Miner

I know some folks may take a look at Gold Miner and wonder why out of all the games on the site they would want to play this one! Well, looks can be very deceiving as what we have here with this game is first of all the start of a franchise that was a big deal online a few years back, but it is also a game that is way more fun and addicting than the primitive style suggests.

The Gold Rush!

This is a high-score style of game where you are playing to get through the different levels, but at the end of the day getting the highest score you can is what this is all about. In many ways, Gold Miner has something of an old-school arcade game style of quality to it all and that is something I mean as a compliment. You play as a little miner who wants to strike it rich by getting as much gold as he can. The story is not exactly rich in a game like this and that is something I am ok with; it still manages to have a bit of charm about it all.

Digging For Gold

The gameplay of Gold Miner is something that when you describe it sounds so incredibly simple and easy that it almost sounds boring. However, there is more challenge here than you realize and that is what keeps you hooked. You have a little mining hook that swings from left to right. You need to press the button at the right time to make it go into the ground the hook will go until it hits something and then it brings it back to you.

While it is gold that you are trying to get, there are rocks and even other stuff there too, that can get in your way. You can make money for getting other stuff, but it is the gold that will really make your score climb up. The larger the gold chunk the longer it takes to come back to you so there is a bit of strategy at play here. Nailing the mechanic of getting the hook to go exactly where you want it is the key. You can get power-ups as you progress such as moonshine which can help you out a great deal, you purchase these in-between levels with the money you make.

I See What You Did There

The presentation of the game is very basic. It has a kind of mobile/mid-00s flash game look to it. While it may be a bit on the basic side, I do like the way the game looks. Everything is nice and clean and while it is not super detailed. What is here is easily recognizable and I think they did a very decent job with it all.

It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when Gold Miner was a pretty big deal and very popular. I found the game to still be pretty fun and while I do think the added gameplay mechanics that the sequels added make the game better. There is something very fun about the simplicity of it all and I found myself playing the game far longer than I thought I would have.

• Even though it is simple, it does require some skill
• Getting a high-score is very addictive

Cons:

• The sequels are better
• It is kind of bare-bones in every regard
