Nanairo Reincarnation is a game that may ring a few bells. The reason for this is that this was originally released for the PlayStation Vita many years ago (about eight as of writing) and it caused a bit of a stir in the lewd visual novel world. It was highly regarded and it even picked up a few awards! Well, you do not have to worry about tracking down a PlayStation Vita to play this game. Instead, you can now play this on your PC and it even has a version released on Steam, but that version is censored.
Setting The Scene
The main character in Nanairo Reincarnation is called Kagami Makato. He is a pretty average college student at first glance, unknown to him, he has a special ability. He can see supernatural beings such as demons, ghosts, and other creepy stuff.
After his grandfather passes away, he inherits his house which comes with a house ghost that is called Iyo. If that was not strange enough, he also has to use his special ability to help the townspeople and of course, find a true love for himself in the process.
The Fab Five
There are five girls that you can try and get within Nanairo Reincarnation. These range from Iyo, a ghost who is a gamer, Aoi, who is like your traditional anime style schoolgirl, and Kotori who is a cute girl too. Each girl has their own personality and you will have to chat with them to get to know them better. There are many choices that you get to make in the game, some feel like they matter, others do not. However, the choices you make will steer you towards one of the five girls. There are more than a few choices here which I always feel helps you keep paying attention.
The Art, Chicks Dig The Art
I am sure that back in 2014 when Nanairo Reincarnation was released for the PlayStation Vita this game must have looked gorgeous on that Vita screen. Well, it holds up very well on a PC monitor and the backgrounds are full of color and little details that you may miss on your first playthrough. Each of the girls has her own style and the XXX scenes are fantastic. Something interesting about this game is that without the XXX patch, the Steam version of the game is more like a love story than a sex story. There is also some Japanese voice acting in the game which is something I always like to see. Although, I did get pretty invested in the plot so some English voice acting would have been great too.
I can see why when Nanairo Reincarnation was released so many people were talking about it. This is a very well made and very polished visual novel. The writing here is great and I found myself caring about a couple of the girls and I enjoyed how I was able to make some decisions that did feel like they mattered in the grand scheme of things.
While I played the game with the XXX patch, I have to say I wish I played the Steam version first to see how the game plays like a story more about love than sex.
- Each of the main characters feels unique
- I love how detailed the backgrounds are
- The character models are fantastic
- I am sure if you play this without the XXX patch, it is a different experience
- I do wish that it had an English voice track
- Some of the dialogue about food goes on a tad too long
