I have played some weird visual novel style games over the years, but I really do think that Nekopara here might be the weirdest. This is actually a bit of a long running series now, but the game I am specifically looking at is volume 1. To be honest, if volume 1 floats your boat you will probably want to play the others.
Ok, let’s get the “cat out of the bag” the big appeal of Nekopara are these beings, people, things, animals or whatever you want to call them. They are catgirls. They look like a cute girl cosplaying as a cat, but they are actually part girl and part cat. They have both human and cat characteristics. What is weird is that in this world, catgirls are a part of everyday life. People have them as pets, companions, workers and yes……. Even lovers. There is nothing unusual about catgirls in this world, but our “hero” Kashou is a little uneasy with the whole thing when it comes to catgirls. All though in all honesty given what he does with the catgirls he really cannot be that uneasy with them.
A Man Starting His Own Bakery
The story that is the backbone for Nekopara is that Kashou has had enough of his interfering family and he wants to break out on his own. He has always dreamed of having his very own bakery so he opens his own one that is called, La Soleil. Inside the bakery, there are two large boxes and in these boxes are two catgirls. The game is about him trying to make a go of it with his bakery and his catgirls “helping” him out. As you would expect there are a lot of screw ups and this is actually quite funny. The story is quite well written and you can tell that the two catgirls (Chocola and Vanilla) want the best for him, but things do not always go as planned.
Say what you want about the subject matter, but Nekopara has some great art, but it also has this thing called E-mote. This gives the characters a bit of animation to bring them to life and it actually works quite well. I think that this is actually a good addition to the world of visual novels.
Gameplay…… What Gameplay?
If you are expecting a lot of decisions to make in this game you will be very disappointed. You basically just experience the story and let it all unfold the way the writer intended. If you get into the story and find the catgirls cute this is great, but if you like visual novel games where you get to make decisions this may turn you off.
Ok, so the version that is on steam has a lot of the sexual explicit content taken out of it. However, you can find the more mature and sexual explicit version out there. Of course, it is up to you what version you want to go for.
Nekopara is a cute game or a really sexual explicit one it is up to you. The idea of catgirls is amusing and the writing is quite funny. The art is truly fantastic and the E-mote system does bring it to life more than your traditional visual novel game. It is a shame there are not at least a couple of choices to be made in the story.
- The writing is amusing
- The two catgirls are cute and funny
- E-mote system brings the story to life
- Steam version is not sexually explicit (well too explicit!)
- Very nice art
- Can be rather NSFW
- Nothing in the way of actual gameplay
