G-senjou no Maou - The Devil on G-String is a Japanese visual novel for adults, an eroge masterpiece known to many fans of the genre. Subtle psychology, mind games, anime sex - you'll find it all in this masterpiece created by developer Akabeisoft2.

Kyosuke Asai

The protagonist of the novella is Kyosuke Asai. His stepfather is a major mafia boss of the Yakuza. Kyosuke helps his stepfather in his criminal affairs. By day, he spends his time quietly playing silly games with his friends and younger sister. At night, he is the right-hand man of an organized crime boss. Kyosuke is influenced by his arrogant foster father and uses all his talents to enrich himself. He eventually becomes the head of a famous company. The novel's protagonist can be described as arrogant, cheerful, and proud.

King of Demons

G-senjou no Maou - The Devil on G-String is a winter story, because the scariest events take place here in winter. In winter, children from rich families begin to go missing, one missing after another. In winter, financial theft and power intrigues begin in the city. The culprit is a certain "demon king" who wants to hurt everyone. In fact, the Demon King is Kyosuke Asai, the protagonist of the short story. How two personalities coexist inside one person you'll find out by playing G-senjou no Maou - The Devil on G-String.

Haru Usami

One day, a new student, Haru Usami, arrives at the school. The main character immediately took a closer look at her and thought the girl was in a depressed mood, Kyosuke also noted her long shaggy hair. The new apprentice acted strangely and showed her sharp mind from time to time. Kyosuke was afraid of her; he literally trembled. Haru is extremely intelligent:

  • Can instantly point out the slightest contradiction or lie in a conversation
  • Thoughtfulness and equanimity always allows her to see the big picture
  • A chic exterior that fascinates all the boys

The outbreak of war

At the same time, a strange letter arrives for Kyosuke, who is doing the mobster's right-hand job as always. Hidden inside the letter was a short message: "The Devil. Haru Usami begins her fight against the Demon King...

Other Characters

In addition to the named characters, there are other minor characters:

  • Tsubaki Miwa. An analog man who doesn't wear a cell phone. Constantly takes care of her little brothers and sisters, as she is forced to - her mother is ill. Tsubaki is pure and innocent.
  • Shiratori Mizuha is a classmate of the main character. The daughter of the head of the school's board of trustees. Because of her situation, she can't talk to anyone for the first time.

G-senjou no Maou - The Devil on G-String is a great novel with cool psychological undertones. Recommended for fans of Kono Yo no Hate de Koi o Utau Shoujo YU-NO and Grisaia no Meikyuu - Le Labyrinthe de la Grisaia.

Game Reviews

When it was released back in 2008, The Devil on G-String was a massive success in Japan. It took forever (seven years actually) for the game to make its way over to the West and now people can get in on this and see why it was so successful. One very strange thing about this game is that it was released on STEAM, but for some reason, if you want the voice acting in the game, you have to pay nearly double the asking price!

The Son Of A Boss

If you are coming into The Devil on G-String thinking this is a cute and sexy kind of visual novel game you are in for a bit of a shock. This is a story that plays it 100 percent serious and I have to say that the story is quite excellent and the most appealing aspect of this game. I will also say that the less you know about the story going in the more you are going to get out of it.

Still, I will let you know the basics of the tale that is being told here. The main protagonist is a high-school student called, Kyousuke and he seems like a normal dude. However, he is actually the son of a mob boss and he is heavily in debt and can be very ruthless. Things take a twist when a new girl moves to his school and asks if he knows someone called Mao.

The Four Tops

Going into The Devil on G-String I had heard just how story-driven the game was. So, I assumed that it would be a visual novel that offered very little in the way of choice to the player. Well, you know what happens when you assume something? You make an ass out of you and me!

You see, this game offers far more choices than you would think and there are four routes that the story can take. Each one is interesting so in that regard, you will probably want to play through the game at least twice. However, I ended up wanting to see all four, and I was not disappointed in any of them.

An Anime By Any Other Name…

The presentation of this game is not going to blow you away. Do not get me wrong, The Devil on G-String is a decent looking game, it just has that anime look which I feel like I have seen a million times before. The characters look good, but are in all honesty, rather unremarkable. Still, the game is decent enough in terms of the visuals so I do not see you being turned off in any way.

One thing that is very surprising and unique about the game is the sound. I went in thinking it would be one thing and then being very surprised. The main character has a real love for classical music and this is reflected in the score of the game and it fits very well. The game offers full Japanese voice acting and it is great, but if you are purchasing the STEAM version, I am not sure you will be wanting to pay the extra price for it as the story is strong enough without it.

I had a great time with The Devil on G-String. So much, that I made sure a good friend of mine who loves visual novels played it so I had someone to discuss it with. It tells a fantastic story and it is a story that I feel more than warrants repeat playthroughs so you can see it in all its glory.

Pros:

  • I loved the story
  • It is a very serious story that grips you from the start
  • Each chapter feels unique
  • I loved the music in the game
  • It has multiple paths for you to experience

Cons:

  • Why does the voice acting version cost so much on STEAM?
  • The visuals are rather uninspired

G-senjou no Maou or if you prefer The Devil on G-String is one of the most interesting visual novel games I have ever played. Unlike many other visual novel style games. G-senjou no Maou/ The Devil on G-String is not just all about very graphic sex. However, this is still most certainly an adult kind of game and a game that is very intelligent in its story.

Rise Of A Boss!

The most compelling aspect of G-senjou no Maou/ The Devil on G-String is the story. The game has you playing the role of Azai Kyousuke who is the adopted son of a Yakuza mob boss! He is a high school student who is trying to balance his high school life with his underground gangster activities. Azai is a very, very compelling protagonist in that he is not good or bad or even what you would refer to as an anti-hero. He is a character with some real depth and your take on him will probably be different to mine.

The main story of the game is him trying to pay back a debt to his father. I really, really wish I could tell you more. However, this is a story that is so strong that you owe it to yourself to experience it without any of the major plot twists being spoiled. Part of what I really liked about the story here is the way it unfolded. It moved at the perfect pace; pacing is something many visual novels struggle with.

It Is All About The Characters

While I think that Azai is a fantastic protagonist. G-senjou no Maou/ The Devil on G-String has some other very memorable characters too. Your buddy, Aizawa is a bit of a dirtbag, but he is very well written. As you would expect, girls are aplenty here, but they are more than just eye candy and characters for the males to have their way with. The main female character, Usami is awesome! She is smart, geeky, socially awkward and also very deep. I found her one of the most intriguing characters I had come across in a visual novel game for quite some time.

Know What You Are Getting

As is the case with all other visual novel style games. You probably know what to expect from the actual gameplay that is on offer here. You mainly read the story, but you do have a few decisions that can move the story in a particular direction. The visual style is truly remarkable and the game has a very high-quality look to it. Which along with the excellent voice acting do move the story along very well.

I think that G-senjou no Maou/ The Devil on G-String is a great game and one that did grab me. It is the kind of game that I played through and then bugged some of my friends to do so. I did this so I had someone to discuss it with as the story was so impactful for me. I cannot recommend this one highly enough if you like visual novels!

Final Score 9/10

Pros:

  • The story is truly great
  • I like how grey the main protagonist is
  • Plenty of interesting characters
  • The “hot” girls have a lot of depth to them
  • The pacing of the story is perfect

Cons:

  • A bit more animation would have been great
  • You will want to talk to everyone about this!
