Released on the PS2 all the way back in 2004, UFC: Sudden Impact is a game that I know very well. I will say that UFC games have come a long way, but for its time I really enjoyed this game and it was one I put a ton of time into. I thought that it would be fun to look back at this and see if it holds up well or if I am just looking at it through nostalgia goggles.

3 Years To Make It To The Top!

UFC: Sudden Impact has a fairly decent story mode. At the time this was released, the main competition was wrestling games like WWE Smackdown vs RAW and Def Jam: Fight for New York so the competition was pretty stiff. I think that they did a solid job with the story mode here. You create your own character and then you have three years to make it to the UFC. You start as a street fighter, but then get to chose from a selection of gyms, each one with its own fighting style. You have to train, earn stat points, learn new moves and try to get a shot at landing in the UFC. I found it to be a lot of fun and it was cool how once you made it to the UFC, your character becomes an actual UFC fighter, available for other modes.

The Path Of A Champion!

Another mode that I really enjoyed and found quite addictive in UFC: Sudden Impact was called, Champion Road. Here you get to select from one of the many UFC fighters in the game and you have to defeat a series of opponents to win a silver belt. It is kind of like an arcade fighting game's main mode. You can then fight another series of matches, defending the belt to make it gold. I tried to do this with every fighter in the game!

The King of the Iron Fist!

The gameplay is similar to the Tekken series in that each of the four face buttons on the PS2 controller is for a different limb. You can then grapple and do other moves via combinations. You can grapple on the cage, do running attacks, and so on. The game is a tad clunky by today’s standards I will admit, but the gameplay in UFC: Sudden Impact is not horrible by any means. There are many different fighting styles and I find the game to be quite accessible for new players too.

This Is Not the 2021 UFC!

Look, UFC: Sudden Impact is a game that is close to 20 years old at the time I am writing this. Not only have video games come a long way, but the UFC also has as well. Things are much flashier and high-tech now and that is reflected here. The presentation of this game is nowhere near what companies like THQ and EA have done with the EA license. They have tried to emulate what you see on TV, but it just has a very “PS2” quality about it so it is most certainly showing its age.

It is pretty unfair to compare UFC: Sudden Impact to modern UFC games, but at the same time, I have to say unless you played this when it was released back in 2004 this is probably not going to blow you away. I have a lot of nostalgia for the game so I am able to overlook the less than stellar presentation and the rather simple gameplay. I think that they made a real effort with this one though and it is one of my favorite PS2 UFC games. Still, I would not play this over one of the more recent offerings if I am being honest with you.
